More asbo cacti than killer plants, these new triffids were not remotely scary, says Sam Wollaston
In the land of the blind, Gordon Brown should be king. But he doesn't even seem to be prime minister any more; he is nowhere to be seen, Downing Street has been deserted and Eddie Izzard has taken over. That could make for a refreshing change. Should we worry for the economy?
Eddie was snoozing on a 747 with an eye mask on when the Big Flash happened, so he got to keep his sight; then he survived the plane crash by locking himself in the loo with a load of inflated life jackets (would that even work?). Now, inspired by Winston Churchill's statue in Parliament Square, he's gone power crazy. There are a few other lucky ones, including Joely Richardson, who kept her sight but appears to have lost the ability to act, »

BBC is once again mining that old school Sci-Fi magic with their remake of Day Of The Triffids. What’s it all about? Man eating plants! How great is that? After a solar storm, plants created to produce a new oil substitute break free of their human oppressors and begin to enthusiastically munch on the British. Since I am a Canadian, the BBC seems to think that former colonies are no longer commonwealthy enough to be privy to these three video previews. This does not please me. This not in your region crap has got to stop. There’s bandwidth enough to go around lads. Anyway, I’ll be watching the big show (somehow) when it airs on the BBC on the 28th of this month. Here’s a gallery of action shots from the show I’ll add in at no extra cost. Day Of The Triffids stars Dougray Scott, »

A New remake of The Day of the Triffids is coming this Christmas, with a stellar cast taking on the deadly plants.
It's now been revealed that the two-part sci-fi drama begins on BBC1 on December 28 at 9pm, with the concluding part on December 29.
The cast is headed by British actor Dougray Scott as Bill Masen. Sci-fi and superhero fanatics may recall that Scott, 44, was cast as Wolverine in the first X-Men film back in 1999 but had to be replaced by Hugh Jackman when shooting on Mission: Impossible II overran by two months.
Fellow X-Men actor Brian Cox - the villainous William Stryker in X2 - joins him as Dennis Masen, with other cast members including Joely Richardson as Jo Playton, Vanessa Redgrave as Durrant, Eddie Izzard as Torrence and Jason Priestley as Coker.

Synopsis:

Free to roam the planet with a fatal sting, and a retributive taste for human flesh, the Triffids begin rapid breeding.

Actress Joely Richardson and her late sister may have been as different as "chalk and cheese," but they were also soulmates - and Joely accepts that there will forever be an empty space in her heart where Natasha used to be. "We were completely enmeshed in each other," Joely, 44, tells the January issue of Britain's Tatler magazine. "I hadn't lived a day in my life without her. You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. Tash was a given to me." It was the first time the Nip/Tuck actress has »

Joely Richardson went into "autopilot" after her sister Natasha Richardson died. The British actress - who lost her beloved sibling earlier this year after a skiing accident in Quebec, Canada - threw herself into her work to help her cope with Natasha's passing but found it difficult because of some uncanny resemblances between her personal life and career. She explained: "A strange autopilot kicks in. Your psyche puts your work day into a different compartment from your private life. I'm not kidding - my first shot back on set was reacting to someone dying." The 44-year-old actress found Natasha's death a massive shock because she had never considered life without her. She told Tatler magazine: "We were such opposites, but completely enmeshed in each other. I hadn't lived a day in my life without her. You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. »

Joely Richardson has spoken out for the first time since the death of her actress sister Natasha, insisting a day hasn't passed when she doesn't think of her.
Natasha Richardson passed away in March after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in Canada, and the tragedy left her younger sibling Joely heartbroken and "shattered".
And the 44 year old admits she still thinks about her beloved Natasha every day.
She tells Tatler magazine, "We were such opposites, but completely enmeshed in each other... I hadn't lived a day in my life without her. You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. Tash was a given to me.
"So much of what I am is who Tasha was, and I think, sharing all those formative years, there is level of merging... I cannot imagine that there will ever be a day when I don't think of Tasha."
Fans were shocked when Joely returned to the set of TV movie The Day of the Triffids a day after her sister's funeral - but she maintains she needed to work to recover from her loss.
She explains, "The shock shatters you on a cellular level, and it takes time for the pieces to come back together, albeit in a different formation... A strange autopilot kicks in; your psyche puts your work day into a different compartment from your private life. I'm not kidding - my first shot back on set was reacting to someone dying." »

Eddie Izzard has admitted to being afraid when he first saw the 1962 movie adaptation of The Day Of The Triffids. The stand-up comedian and actor stars in a new BBC One version of John Wyndham's 1951 post-apocalyptic novel. Izzard told The Last Broadcast: "My character, Torrence, spends half his time trying to get off with Joely Richardson's character, which was fun! "It's just a great story really, a great sci-fi thriller. The film from way back when really scared me, with the clicking noise that the Triffids made. "I think I've done good work (more) »

Hollow Reed (1996) Direction: Angela Pope Screenplay: Paula Milne Cast: Martin Donovan, Joely Richardson, Sam Bould, Ian Hart, Jason Flemyng, Annette Badland, Roger Lloyd-Pack Hollow Reed, the tale of a little boy loved by his gay father and abused by his hetero stepfather, was the winner of the Audience Award at the 1996 Dinard British Film Festival. That shouldn’t be surprising. After all, director Angela Pope and screenwriter Paula Milne squeeze every possible dramatic element the story could offer, from relentless closeups of young actor Sam Bould’s soulful face to a climactic bloody fight between the film’s warring dads. Most audiences love that. Personally, I believe that approach is perfectly fine as long as the filmmakers don’t take themselves too seriously [...] »

Chicago – Let’s be honest: “Nip/Tuck” has been in need of a face lift for years. The show arguably jumped the shark when The Carver took over (in season three) and has never quite looked the same since. Even with the sizable flaws of the last two seasons, “Nip/Tuck” was never boring. It even showed flashes of creator Ryan Murphy’s occasional genius in the seasons since.
But the premiere of season six, which will be the show’s last, hints at a team that has grown weary of their own creation. Dull, confusing, and simply uninteresting, “Nip/Tuck” looks like it might go out with a whimper instead of a bang.
Television Rating: 2.5/5.0
The premiere of season six, “Don Hoberman,” raises more questions than anything else. And not questions about where it’s going but about what the hell happened. Firstly, who thought that Katee Sackhoff (“Battlestar Galactica »

Q: There are so many songs on each episode of Glee! How in the world do they record it all? And how do they pick the songs? – Velma, New Orleans, La
A: It’s a hell of a lot of work! For the first thirteen episodes, they recorded well over 60 songs.
“On the first episodes, we were preparing weeks in advance,” says Kevin McHale, who plays Artie (the guy in the wheelchair). “But as we got down to doing episodes twelve and thirteen, we’d record it Monday, rehearse on Tuesday, and shoot it on Wednesday. It just got crazy. We’re recording for an episode before while shooting the current episode and rehearsing another episode. It can be anywhere from ten to 16 hours on the set.”

Jason Isaacs was stunned to hear about the death of his The Patriot co-star Heath Ledger - and immediately rang the movie's other stars to mourn the tragedy.
The pair starred in the 2000 war movie, alongside Mel Gibson and Joely Richardson, and kept in contact after filming had wrapped, meeting up whenever their schedules allowed.
Ledger's untimely death from a prescription drug overdose in January 2008 devastated Isaacs, who felt compelled to reminisce about the actor with his former co-stars.
He tells Total Film magazine, "All of us who'd worked with him on The Patriot, when we heard the news, people who hadn't spoken for years were phoning each other - we just wanted to somehow connect. He was a very sweet boy."
Isaacs remembers his last meeting with Ledger with great fondness - because the late star had just discovered he had landed the role of The Joker in Batman movie The Dark Knight.
Isaacs adds, "The last time I saw Heath was at Soho House. He said, 'I'm about to play The Joker.' I went, 'F**k, are you? Nightmare!' He said, 'I know, I know.' I said, 'Did you watch the other one?' He said, 'No! Don't be mad, that's not gonna help is it? I've got this notepad and I'm just writing down ideas.'"
Ledger posthumously won this year's Oscar and Golden Globe awards for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of The Joker. »

Irish actor Liam Neeson returned to his late wife Natasha Richardson’s favorite holiday spot once again this July. Neeson, joined by good friend and English actor Ralph Fiennes and his13-year-old son, Michael, traveled to the French beach getaway of St. Tropez for the second time since his wife’s tragic death. The Ballymena born actor last visited the vacation spot, where he often traveled with Richardson during their marriage, in April for an Easter retreat following Richardson’s sudden death after a skiing accident in March. During that trip, a brokenhearted Neeson was accompanied by his and Richardson’s two sons, Michael and Daniel, Richardson’s mother Vanessa Redgrave, sister Joely Richardson and Joely’s daughter, Daisy. Reports said that the 56-year-old looked weary and sad as he spent time with the group at the St. Tropez beachside venue Le Club 55. Neeson was in much better spirits, however »
