Battle of the Network Gays: December 18, 2009

18 December 2009 10:54 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Every week we pick the gays who we think have made the biggest splash in television (or pop culture in general) and leave it to you, the keepers of the flame, to decide who will be crowned Gay of the Week.

Last week's results had the juggernaut that is "Kish" mowing down the competition — including Adam Lambert. (That poor guy always seems to come in second.)

This week we got a little help in the nominating department from a few readers who wish to remain nameless. Fresh eyes brought us some interesting candidates for gay of the week, three of whom have never been nominated before!

This week's contenders:

Neil Patrick Harris  Nph has had a great week overall. First his performance this week on How I Met Your Mother (wiith fellow out guest star Harvey Fierstein doing voice work), then via Twitter comes news he'll be directing an upcoming episode of his sitcom. »

"The Closer" Puts on Latex Funbags and a Matronly Dress

17 December 2009 6:30 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

There are two operative modes for The Closer. Half the time viewers get dark and gritty episodes — usually involving a horrifically violent crime, a sympathetic victim, and Det. Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) emotionally affected by the tragedy she's investigating.

The second type of Closer episode is basically lighthearted fluff. There's a crime involved, sure, but the focus is more on Brenda Leigh's cat, or maybe her overly adorable parents are in town and tagging along to crime scenes. Forced hilarity ensues.

I love The Closer when it is gritty and dark, but those lighter episodes are so sugary they make your teeth hurt.

This week we got one of the fluff episodes. Blergh. You could just tell from the opening shot of Brenda Leigh in a pink parka.

Too bad really, because it turned out to also be the week the show chose to explore transgender issues. Beau Bridges »

Review: The Closer - Make Over

15 December 2009 6:29 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

(S05E14) "Hello, Beau Bridges? Yes, this is The Closer calling. Would you like an Emmy nomination? You would... Okay, we're sending you the script now."

Perhaps it didn't happen exactly that way, but here was a show in which a gifted actor was presented a wonderful opportunity and he rose to the occasion. The Closer is one of those procedurals that has a deft touch with the comic episodes. Oh yeah, there are occasions when it gets a little bizarre -- and this episode might have gone there but it didn't. Instead, we had a terrific twist in more ways than one.

We also got to see how adorable Kyra Sedgwick looks in a hot pink ski parka. For more on the wardrobe and the old folks getting killed by the faux nurse, read on.

The Name Game: Biblical Boys

27 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

For baby name purists the search for the perfect moniker often begins and ends with the Bible. Featuring countless names that have endured for thousands of years, it is the epitome of traditional — offering time-honored appeal to both celebrities and non-celebrities alike.

Nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz notes that biblical names claim the top five spots on the Most Popular list for boys. What’s more, she points out, “there’s been an Old Testament name at #1 for the past 55 years, when New Testament classics like John and James started to lose their lead.”

'Gamer' Has Got Game, But These Other Movies Do Not

4 September 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Contrary to popular belief, movie adaptations of popular video games haven’t been that terrible. “Double Dragon” wasn’t that great, but the rest? Yes, “Super Mario Bros.” was weird as hell, but look at the source material! Dennis Hopper ruling over a dystopian city by turning people into mushrooms isn’t a that much stranger than an 8-bit Italian plumber growing a raccoon tail and using it to fly. The “Street Fighter” movie –- the first one at least -– is one of cinema’s greatest works of camp. Fifty years from now, people will throw Uwe Boll festivals. He is our new Ed Wood. “Doom” had guns and those guns were used on monsters. “Hitman” let us see Olga Kurlyenko naked. See? It hasn’t been all that bad!

No, the problem is when movies treat video games as their subject, not their inspiration. For thirty years straight, »

Emmy predix: Steve Martin or Beau Bridges to win best guest actor in a comedy?

18 August 2009 8:45 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Emmy bout over best guest comedy actor is a toss-up according to our Emmy gurus Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria (Awardsheaven.net). They make brave predictions, but don't seem to stand bravely by them. (Too bad they're not clashing like mad gladiators as usual — what a gyp!) But their insights into this match-up are fascinating, proving that this comedy contest is quite dramatic in terms of suspense. Read their expanded views below, plus check out their forecasts for the following races too: best comedy actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, directing, writing. Justin Timberlake Owns The Emmy Awards

16 July 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

In the past year, Justin Timberlake has become as well known as a comedic foil to "Saturday Night Live" cast member Andy Samberg as he is for being a singer. (There's also his ever expanding golf empire.) He's snagging plenty of recognition, as he found out this morning that he has been nominated for two Emmy Awards.

His first nomination comes in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category for his Samberg collaboration "Motherlover." Timberlake already has one of these under his belt for his performance of the viral smash "D--- In a Box," which also co-starred Samberg. He's got some stiff competition, including songs from "Flight of the Conchords" and "A Colbert Christmas." He'll even be competing against himself — he's got a second nomination in this category for his contribution to the song "I Love Sports" from the Espy Awards.

But it's no surprise that Timberlake would be getting music-related award nominations (after all, »

Michael Muhney of "The Young and the Restless" on Playing Heteroflexible, Machiavellian and More!

8 July 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It's not often one hears the world of daytime soap operas compared to the writing of Shakespeare, but that's exactly what Michael Muhney thought when Maria Bell, showrunner for The Young and the Restless, described what Muhney's character would get up to should Muhney decide to join the show.

The Veronica Mars alum did decide to take the part and in doing so, landed square in the middle of what has become an explosion of queer characters on daytime television. In addition to the ground-breaking Luke and Noah on As the World Turns, there is the blossoming relationship between Kyle and Fish on One Life to Live, the return of Phillip Chancellor to The Young and the Restless where gay attorney Rafe Torres had already taken up residence, and numerous other secondary gay characters scattered across the daytime landscape.

But Muhney's Y&R character, Adam Wilson, might be involved in »
