Nick Cassavetes likes plucking heartstrings and he’s not afraid to dig into your chest to do so. Unfortunately, the digging is sort of a laborious process and it can take Cassavetes an hour or two to even scratch the surface. Maybe you were swept away by his romantic tale of Alzheimers-afflicted love in The Notebook? It did have a surprisingly strong cast (Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling and James Garner) and whether you like the movie or not, chances are your body either produces a healthy share of estrogen and you loved the film or your body doesn’t but someone from the first category insisted you watch it. Yet, he also directed Alpha Dog, so his tendencies towards emotionally manipulative clearly aren’t his only option. My Sister’s Keeper, however, plays directly into his manipulative side; if you’re a crier then you’ll get that cathartic sobbing »

Recently arriving on Blu-ray just in time to tug at your heart strings for the holidays is My Sister's Keeper. Directed by Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, John Q) and with solid performances by Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vassilieva, the movie is an intriguing, but sad tale of one family's battle to stay together amidst a long fight with a rare form of cancer. Keeper is based on the successful novel by Jodi Picoult and follows the Fitzgerald family, which is being torn apart by the eldest daughter's lifelong struggle with a deadly form of leukemia. The youngest daughter Anna (Breslin) is conceived deliberately to be a genetic match and bone marrow donor for her sick sister. Years later, after many intrusive and painful donor operations, Anna decides to sue her parents (Cameron Diaz and Jason Patric) for medical emancipation to prevent herself from being her sister's kidney donor. Chicago – Sometimes all it takes is a glance at a film’s poster to know where it’s stepped wrong. The poster for “My Sister’s Keeper” shows photogenic stars Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin smiling at each other, while their saintly co-star (Sofia Vassilieva) drifts below them, blowing bubbles. Anyone who has read Jodi Picoult’s book (on which this film is based) will know that there’s no reason why these two characters should be smiling at each other, except to fool audiences into thinking this is some kind of heartwarming feel-good drama. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what filmmaker Nick Cassavetes intends to transform his source material into, and the resulting film fails to grapple with the issues Picoult’s book boldly addresses.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0
The premise holds great promise: eleven-year-old Anna (Breslin) was genetically engineered and conceived by her parents to be a donor to her sister »

When it comes to reviewing films, you often find yourself at odds with certain demographics which render your efforts useless. My Sister's Keeper presents such a case merely by being directed by Nick Cassavetes, and by being based on a book by Jodi Picoult. There are so many people who are set in their interest in such a film, that the potential use of a review is rather trivial. Whether you know you're going to watch it, or know you aren't, the odds are that you're solidly in one of those camps. That's particularly frustrating for a movie such as this, because leaving aside Cameron Diaz, there's actually quite a bit to recommend about it. Our story is that of the Fitzgerald family, and the unique struggle they endure. A fairly typical family, Mom (Diaz) is a lawyer, and Dad (Jason Patric) is a fireman. »

"My Sister's Keeper" is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def.
The family drama, available from Warner Home Video, was released on November 17. Based on the best-selling novel by Jodi Picoult, it follows the story of a family struck by tragedy in a story that Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal refers to as ".heartfelt and deeply affecting."
The movie tells the tale of the Fitzgerald family, whose lives revolve around oldest daughter Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who has had leukemia since the age of 2. Though mother Sara (Cameron Diaz) and father Brian (Jason Patric) have run themselves ragged keeping the family afloat despite mounting medical bills and a juvenile delinquency streak in their neglected oldest son Jesse (Evan Ellingson), the most put-upon member of the household is youngest child Anna (Abigail Breslin), who was purposely conceived to be a donor of bodily materials for her sister. But when Kate needs a kidney transplant, »

In rebooting the franchise, J.J. Abrams faced the daunting challenge of pleasing long-time Trekkies and roping in new viewers who think 'Live long and prosper' is a slogan for an insurance company. This is not your father's Star Trek, but he'd probably like it too (begrudgingly). Buy it. Also on Blu-ray (see Todd Gilchrist's review for more on that edition.)

I'm not a big fan of the 'ridicule the clueless' school of humor, so I turn to Cinematical's review by Todd Gilchrist: "curiously ineffective, a sort of middling effort that fails to liberate itself from the stereotypes that provide the character's foundations, even if it also doesn't deliberately or harmfully reinforce them." Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

He's also seeking damages for other work he says he passed on while working on "Kingdom." Cassavetes was attached as director in March. · It had to happen eventually: Fox plans to revive its $300 million-generating franchise masterpiece Big Momma's House, recruiting writer Randi Mayem Singer to work out a screenplay for the series' third installment. The best part of the story: "Log line is under wraps." I'd like to see Singer go meta, dramatizing a behind-the-scenes duel between the Sony suits who greenlit White Chicks 2 and the Fox suits who reacted with this, both jockeying for market share in Hollywood's ultra-competitive Pandering Minstrelsy bracket. Anyone got a better idea? [Variety]

The Notebook filmmaker Nick Cassavetes is suing bosses of a leading Hollywood studio after they reportedly dropped him as a director and refused to pay him any money.
The screenwriter claims he was hired by New Line Cinema to "supervise the script" for movie Elephant Orphanage, for which he agreed a fee of $275,000 (£171,875).
He was also reportedly promised "several million dollars" to direct the film - but Cassavetes insists he had to completely re-write the script, which he would normally charge $750,000 (£468,750) for.
In the lawsuit, Cassavetes states that after he finished the script movie bosses dropped him as director of the picture and refused to pay him any money.
The My Sister's Keeper writer is requesting $1,050,000 (£656,250) for his services, plus the money he was allegedly promised to direct the film. »

The last time Nick Cassavetes directed a movie for New Line, the result was this summer’s sleeper weepie, My Sister’s Keeper, which pulled in a respectable $69 million worldwide. Based on that, you’d think that all would be well between the two parties.Until, that is, today, when Cassavetes issued a lawsuit against New Line Cinema, alleging breach of contract and fraud.Cassavetes’ lawsuit comes after he was fired from the drama Peaceable Kingdom, a Gorillas In The Mist-style biopic of Daphne Sheldrick, a campaigner who dedicates her lives to rescuing baby elephants from the ravages of war, poaching and smuggling.Cassavetes came on board the movie in March, but was recently fired. Nick Cassavetes has had enough, and it seems his collaboration with New Line Cinema is now coming to an end. The filmmaker has decided to sue the studio over the upcoming "Peaceable Kingdom," which is based on the life and career of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, an animal conservationist.
The Hollywood Reporter says trouble started when Cassavetes was promised to direct the film but ended up being fired instead. Jeff Stockwell wrote a draft of the script, which Cassavetes was apparently asked to rewrite. When he turned in his new version, New Line supposedly kicked him out. »

Nick Cassavetes is suing New Line Cinema over a claim that he was promised a job directing the film "Peaceable Kingdom" only to be axed from the movie after handing over a full rewrite of the script for which he was not paid.
