There Are No Words: Fox Developing Big Momma's House 3

3 September 2009 6:30 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· It had to happen eventually: Fox plans to revive its $300 million-generating franchise masterpiece Big Momma's House, recruiting writer Randi Mayem Singer to work out a screenplay for the series' third installment. The best part of the story: "Log line is under wraps." I'd like to see Singer go meta, dramatizing a behind-the-scenes duel between the Sony suits who greenlit White Chicks 2 and the Fox suits who reacted with this, both jockeying for market share in Hollywood's ultra-competitive Pandering Minstrelsy bracket. Anyone got a better idea? [Variety]

The Notebook filmmaker Nick Cassavetes is suing bosses of a leading Hollywood studio after they reportedly dropped him as a director and refused to pay him any money.

The screenwriter claims he was hired by New Line Cinema to "supervise the script" for movie Elephant Orphanage, for which he agreed a fee of $275,000 (£171,875).

He was also reportedly promised "several million dollars" to direct the film - but Cassavetes insists he had to completely re-write the script, which he would normally charge $750,000 (£468,750) for.

In the lawsuit, Cassavetes states that after he finished the script movie bosses dropped him as director of the picture and refused to pay him any money.

The My Sister's Keeper writer is requesting $1,050,000 (£656,250) for his services, plus the money he was allegedly promised to direct the film. »

Nick Cassavetes Sues New Line

2 September 2009 11:37 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

The last time Nick Cassavetes directed a movie for New Line, the result was this summer’s sleeper weepie, My Sister’s Keeper, which pulled in a respectable $69 million worldwide. Based on that, you’d think that all would be well between the two parties.Until, that is, today, when Cassavetes issued a lawsuit against New Line Cinema, alleging breach of contract and fraud.Cassavetes’ lawsuit comes after he was fired from the drama Peaceable Kingdom, a Gorillas In The Mist-style biopic of Daphne Sheldrick, a campaigner who dedicates her lives to rescuing baby elephants from the ravages of war, poaching and smuggling.Cassavetes came on board the movie in March, but was recently fired. The lawsuit alleges that he did not receive payment he was due for undertaking a rewrite of Jeff Stockwell’s script; and it also covers payment for other projects that he claimed he turned down during the same period, »

Nick Cassavetes sues New Line Cinema big time

Nick Cassavetes has had enough, and it seems his collaboration with New Line Cinema is now coming to an end. The filmmaker has decided to sue the studio over the upcoming "Peaceable Kingdom," which is based on the life and career of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, an animal conservationist.

The Hollywood Reporter says trouble started when Cassavetes was promised to direct the film but ended up being fired instead. Jeff Stockwell wrote a draft of the script, which Cassavetes was apparently asked to rewrite. When he turned in his new version, New Line supposedly kicked him out. »

Nick Cassavetes Suing New Line Over Elephant Movie

2 September 2009 4:23 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Back in March we reported that Nick Cassavetes, the weepie director of The Notebook and My Sister's Keeper, would be shifting gears to direct Peaceable Kingdom, a drama about elephant conservationist Daphne Sheldrick. Now not only is that project not happening, but it's ending in a lawsuit. According to THR, Cassavetes is suing New Line Cinema, claiming he delivered a full rewrite of the script only to be booted from the project entirely. The lawsuit reads, "New Line made promises to (Cassavetes) that he would direct the film in order to obtain his services as a writer without having to enter into a separate writer's agreement and pay him his usual fee for a complete page one rewrite." Suing a major movie studio can't be easy-- they've got lawyers like I've got fruit flies-- but maybe New Line is an easier target, given that it's a studio that barely exists »

'Time Traveler's Wife': Welcome back, Rachel McAdams?

15 August 2009 1:31 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

We won't have a complete box office report until tomorrow, but The Time Traveler's Wife made a tidy $7.7 million yesterday, and if predictions are to be believed, the movie will keep holding its own just fine at the cineplex this weekend, serving as a perfect slice of counter programming against this week's sci-fi sensation, District 9. The big-screen adaptation of Audrey Niffenegger's best-selling novel is shaping up to be Rachel McAdams' first hit since 2005's The Family Stone, which is a decent feat, considering the reviews have ranged from lukewarm enjoyment to outright befuddlement. I'm with the critics on this one. Having read Niffenegger's book, I went into the movie hoping to experience some real, hot-and-bothered romantic swooning. We're talking about McAdams and Eric Bana here, actors with the potential to push the smokin' quotient off the charts! But the movie just sort of bumps along without the »

Cameron Diaz talks ‘Green Hornet’ and her feelings on the script

30 July 2009 6:46 AM, PDT | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

"Hi Ms. Diaz, I'm here to clean your pool....whoa."

Cameron Diaz will indeed join the cast of the upcoming adaptation of the cult ’60s show, The Green Hornet, as Lenore Case, “a crime specialist.”

“Lenore, yes, and I think that’s all I can tell you or else I would have to kill you,” she told MTV. “I read the whole script. I know what happens exactly, and I’m not telling you.”

On Atomic Popcorn I reported that both Diaz and Nicolas Cage were in talks for the Michael Gondry directed feature. While Diaz sounds excited about the project, Cage is still believed to be in the discussion-making process.

Cameron Diaz was recently at Comic Con in San Diego discussing her recently completed mystery-thriller The Box, based on the story from horror legend Richard Matheson (I Am Legend). She was last seen in the Nick Cassavetes film My Sister’s Keeper. »

Awkward Kissing on Harry Potter set/A Rose by any other name./”Asteroids” movie: is this a joke?/My Sister’s Keeper includes a performance not to be forgotten

Awkward Kissing on Harry Potter set Emma Watson ("Harry Potter's Hermione) recently commented that "...in a new interview on the BBC's "Friday Night with Jonathan Ross," the 19-year-old revealed kissing Rupert (Grint), who plays teen wizard Ron Weasley, was just about the most uncomfortable filming experience she's had in her career so far."  Emma commented: "We did the kiss two weeks ago and it was the most horrible thing I've ever had to do...There are millions of girls out there who would probably chop their left arm off to kiss [Rupert], but it just felt like incest. That's the only way I can describe it."  I guess thats what happens when you spend "...half of (your) life playing Hermione Granger alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint in the "Harry Potter" series." Weekend Box Office: 'Revenge of the Fallen' Defines Critic-Proof

29 June 2009 9:45 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Well, don't we all feel a little silly. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the movie that received the most hysterically negative reviews of 2009 opened to by far the year's biggest numbers -- $201 million since Wednesday, according to estimates. That's just a couple million shy of the first-five-days-of-release record set by The Dark Knight, though that movie opened on a Thursday. (It's tough to truly compare opening weekends of mega-blockbusters these days, since God knows on what day of the week they all hit theaters.) I hope everyone is looking forward to Transformers 3, where Autobots will discover fart jokes.

The only movie to dare take on Revenge of the Fallen in wide release, was the Nick Cassavetes weepie My Sister's Keeper, which opened to a respectable $12 million -- almost as strong as Cassavetes' The Notebook, though unlikely to be carried to an $80 million cume by good word-of-mouth. Year One took a big tumble, »

When Is It Ok to Change the Original Ending?

28 June 2009 2:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

How faithful should film adaptations be? The issue arises both with novels and with films that are remade: fans of the original are none-too-pleased to see the personality of beloved characters changed, settings or time periods moved, or -- horror of horrors! -- the ending changed. Watchmen ignited a mini-firestorm with the decision to alter the ending of the original graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. On a somewhat smaller scale, faithful readers of Jodi Picoult's novel My Sister's Keeper are upset that the ending was changed for Nick Cassavetes' just-released movie version.

Author Picoult disclaims responsibility while trying to be diplomatic. "Yes, I know the ending is different," she writes on her official site. "Yes, I know some of you are very upset. I didn't change it. The author has no control over the movie, and it was hard for me to accept too. However, »
