Celebrity Photographer Willoughby Dies

29 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Celebrity photographer Bob Willoughby has died, aged 82.

Willoughby, who photographed Audrey Hepburn, Roman Polanski and Mia Farrow, Frank Sinatra, Dustin Hoffman, and many others on Hollywood movie sets, lost his battle with cancer on 18 December at his home in Vence, in the South of France.

In the early 1950s he began photographing jazz musicians in California clubs, notably Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan.

He became well known in Hollywood after Warner Brothers asked him to photograph Judy Garland on the set of her 1954 film A Star Is Born. The iconic photo later landed the cover of Life magazine.

Willoughby also created lasting images of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on the set of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Jane Fonda at work on Klute, Hepburn on Roman Holiday, and Sinatra, whom he photographed with the Rat Pack in front of the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas during the filming of Ocean’s Eleven.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his sons Christopher, Stephen and David, a daughter, Catherine, and eight grandchildren. »

Roman Polanski Could Be Back in U.S. by January

16 December 2009 5:47 AM, PST | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Fugitive director Roman Polanski could be back in the United States by January to face sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl more than 32 years ago. There is no guarantee, however, that he will serve time in jail. Polanski’s lawyers in Los Angeles are said to be working furiously to prevent jail time for the aging director. Polanski directed and wrote the screenplay for the 1968 horror movie “Rosemary’s Baby,” starring Mia Farrow. Before winning the Oscar for “The Pianist,” he was nominated for best director twice for 1974’s “Chinatown,” starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and John Huston and 1979’s “Tess,” which ironically is about an older man’s lust for an underage girl. »

Full of the strange

In September Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland. He faces extradition to the Us, having fled the States in 1978 to avoid being sentenced for unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The debate about the case has raged ever since. Martin Amis was the first writer to interview Polanski after his flight, meeting him in Paris in 1979 for a magazine article. Here, we publish the encounter in full

When I was being driven to the police station from the hotel, the car radio was already talking about it. The newsmen were calling the police before I was arrested to see whether they can break the news. I couldn't believe… I thought, you know, I was going to wake up from it. I realise, if I have killed somebody, it wouldn't have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. »

Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Could Carla Bruni be the next Mia Farrow?

25 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

France's first lady has agreed to be in a Woody Allen film. She's such an obvious choice, we should have predicted it

Why on earth didn't we predict it long ago? France's first lady, Carla Bruni, has revealed that Woody Allen has asked her to be in one of his films, despite her complete lack of acting experience. And she has said yes.

Bruni – of course! She is a quintessential Minor Woody Allen Character: sexy, wealthy, European in that luxury-hotel sense that he adores, liberated in a pre-feminist sort of way, with creative aspirations that are preposterous but which powerful, besotted men might well indulge in the hope of getting inside her exquisitely tailored culottes.

Bruni is the classic unattainable woman from a golden-age Woody Allen picture: the sort who might get a party-scene cameo, towering sexily over him while giving her deadpan opinions on literary or artistic topics – opinions with which he, »

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

23 November 2009 1:12 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look  at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!

We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Idw Announces 'The Last Unicorn' Comic Book

17 November 2009 2:21 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Peter S. Beagle’s 1968 novel "The Last Unicorn" (which was later adapted into an animated film in 1982) will now be adapted into a six-issue comic book series from Idw Publishing.

The series will kick off in April 2010, and will be adapted from Beagle's novel by writer Peter B. Gillis — who also happens to be the writer behind one of our favorite series around Splash Page HQ, the early-'80s Marvel series "Strikeforce: Morituri" (recently mentioned in our "Scariest Comics We've ever Read" list). Art for the miniseries will be provided by Renae De Liz and her husband Ray Dillon.

The tale of a unicorn's quest to discover why she's the only one of her kind, the animated Rankin/Bass adaptation of "The Last Unicorn" was one of the staple fantasy films for children of the '80s. The film featured the voices of Christopher Lee, Angela Lansbury, Alan Arkin, Jeff Bridges, »

'Charlie's Angels' Revival Sits Down On The Hollywood Crush Casting Couch

13 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Hollywood Crush: Who would have thunk it? "Charlie's Angels" is back in full throttle! According to Variety, the concept that originated in 1976 is set to be picked up by ABC. The same guy who adapted the now-defunct Fox series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," Josh Friedman, is set to write and exec produce.

The original show was a hit for five years starring the late, great Farrah Fawcett. That TV show later was adapted into two films starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore. Let’s think here. What if Farrah Fawcett had never starred in "Charlie’s Angels", what if Diane Keaton took her spot instead? Or Mia Farrow, maybe? All we know is that if Hollywood Crush were around at the time, we would have had something to say about it!

So, with that being said, we thought it would be rather fascinating to create our »

This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. Pat Seals of Flyleaf Shares His Top Ten Horror Films

9 November 2009 10:24 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

As we've mentioned previously, November 10th is the release date of the band Flyleaf's new CD, entitled Memento Mori, and to help celebrate the occasion, their bass player, Pat Seals, has taken time out of his hectic schedule to prepare for Dread Central readers a list of his Top Ten favorite horror films.

Nothing relieves the stress of the holidays -- or anything really -- like a good horror flick, and Pat certainly has prepared an eclectic catalog that shows he knows his shit about our genre.

Without further ado, here's Pat's list (click each image to see the full poster):

1. The Addiction (1995) - Dir. Abel Ferrara, Starring Lili Taylor

This is my favorite vampire movie. It is the best. The best. Morality and the darkness of human nature are the focus, and Lili Taylor's performance is brutal. Plus, Christopher Walken waltzes in for a philosophical cameo. The »

Farrow Concerned About Sudan Elections

5 November 2009 2:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Mia Farrow has taken her passion for the affairs of Sudan to the Toronto Star newspaper in Canada, agreeing to pen a column for the publication this weekend.

The Rosemary's Baby star, who fasted earlier this year to raise awareness about the refugee crisis in Sudan, has leaked an extract of her upcoming op-ed piece on her blog.

In it, she calls for Americans to pay careful attention to the 2010 elections in Sudan, and raises concerns about officials who are obstructing the fair monitoring of the vote.

She writes, "Next April a critical presidential and parliamentary election is scheduled to take place in Sudan. The elections are an integral part of the 2005 peace agreement that ended more than two decades of war between north and southern Sudan.

"The 2005 peace deal set up a transitional unified government based in Khartoum in the north, and Juba in the south. But the hostilities and a complete lack of trust between north and south is far from ended. As a core part of the 2005 peace deal, in 2011 there is to be a referendum in which the south can choose whether to become independent from the north.

"Based on my two trips to Southern Sudan, I believe this is what the people of Southern Sudan hope for, although no one believes the north will allow it to happen without a return to war. Remember the oil fields.

"Voter registration officially began this week... The Carter Center, based in Atlanta, has been invited to monitor the elections but permits for the 32 monitors from the Carter Center are being denied or delayed by Khartoum officials. Funds promised to state-level election committees have not come through, therefore local committees are unable to pay staff. It is not clear to the people where the registration sites are, and sites are closed arbitrarily.

"According to the Carter Center, insecurity and intimidations are obstructing international observers from monitoring registrations for Sudan's first nationwide elections.

"The Carter Center called on Sudan to disarm militias. They are asking Khartoum to revoke the "state of emergency" in the western Darfur region as this will serve to hamper the voting there. Although Sudanese authorities claim voting will take place in Darfur, many are skeptical. The Carter Center have called upon Sudanese authorities to ensure the observers' freedom of movement. But the team continues to meet obstacles. These many hindrances will diminish the capacity of the only international group Sudan permitted to monitor the voting - to verify the fairness of the election."

The Carter Center was created by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. »

Farrow Troubled By Gaza Problems

2 November 2009 2:01 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Mia Farrow has been left haunted by the news a Palestinian has suffocated to death after a tunnel collapse under the Gaza Strip at the weekend.

In a post on her blog, the Rosemary's Baby star reveals there are over 800 tunnels along the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt - and one collapsed on Sunday as aid workers were bringing in supplies.

Farrow writes, "While I was in Gaza, one tunnel worker, a child, was killed and seven were injured during an Israeli bombing raid. The 1.5 million people living in Gaza depend on hundreds of tunnels beneath the border to get fuel and other products, since Gaza has been sealed off after the Hamas takeover in June 2007.

"Israeli bombings are frequent and more than 130 Palestinians, many of them children, have been killed while working in the tunnels."

And the celebrity activist's thoughts are with those suffering in Gaza, who are also without fresh water.

She adds, "Most of Gaza water is unsuitable for drinking... The daily quota of water for each person in Gaza is 80 liters, half of the W.H.O (World Health Organisation) minimum standard. The 1.5 million people of the coastal strip rely on one aquifer as their sole source of water.

"However, the sea water has blended with the underground water, making it salty. Since the sewage plant was also bombed, raw sewage flows into the sea."

Israel has imposed a complete closure on Gaza since 2007 and the rebuilding of sewage and water treatment stations is impossible due to the lack of building materials and spare parts. Last week, Amnesty International accused Israel of depriving Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank of water. »

The Best New York City Horror Movies

Mia Farrow in Polanski's Rosemary's Baby

Writer Nick Carr of the Huffington Post site lists his choices for the best horror films set in New York City. We only take issue with the inclusion of Wait Until Dark, which is more a thriller than a horror film. On the other hand, Carr is canny enough to include the original Planet of the Apes, although, again, this is a sci-fi film rather than a horror movie. Check out the list and see if you concur with Carr's opinion. »

Top 7 Films Directed by Actors Turned Directors

30 October 2009 4:34 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

The old joke is that all actors want to direct.  Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list.  The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors.  This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You.  Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.

7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

Directed by John Cassavetes

Recap: A portrait of family in crisis when a woman (Gena Rowlands) goes mad and her husband (Peter Falk) tries to understand it.

Horror Hero Sam Raimi Reveals His Favorite Scary Movies For Halloween

29 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's the eternal dorm-room debate, the stuff of boozy smack-talking sessions and stony, less-than-coherent arguments: what's the scariest movie of all-time? It's a (sober) discussion we've been having at MTV News as Halloween sneaks up on us and a question we've been throwing out to folks in the film biz who truly know their fright-fest stuff.

When I had a chance to talk with Sam Raimi – he of the many righteous "Evil Dead" pictures – I had to get his thoughts on the matter. The first thing he told me was that the horror genre scares the crap out of him. "It's hard to sit through them," he confessed. "I really enjoy it when I'm in the middle of it, it's just hard to approach the theater." The second thing he said is that he loves them dearly. The third and fourth and fifth and sixth? Those scary movies he cherishes »

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

Act Welcomes Former NFL Star Bo Eason in Runt Of The Litter 9/18-10/24

A father's expectations. A son's dream. A brother's rivalry.

Runt of the Litter is the acclaimed, semi-autobiographical one-man show (soon to be a major motion picture) chronicles volatile family dynamics as well as triumph despite great odds. Always considered too small to play football, former Houston Oiler Bo Eason developed-then never deviated from-a 20-year-plan to go pro. But his plan didn't include a more talented older brother whose success would forever eclipse his own.

Written and performed by Bo Eason and directed by Larry Moss, Runt of the Litter opens in the final hour of Jack Henry's lifelong dream, with only one thing that stands in his way: his brother. The play closely examines what happens to two brothers in a family of overachievers: when their parents assure their oldest son that he is the one destined for football superstardom, and they tell their youngest son he is too small to compete. »

Oscar... Now With More Spirit Fingers

Shankman's got spirit!

Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »
