I’m in Las Vegas at the International Film Festival Summit. Over the weekend I went to producer Jason Blum’s celebratory party for Paranormal Activity at his super-moderne house up above Sunset Plaza. It boasts a huge view of the city and great art and an angled pool that looks like you’d swim off the edge if you weren’t careful. Filmmaker Oren Peli, actors Dougray Scott and Claire Forlani, CAA’s Bryan Lourd, The Daily Beast’s Kim Masters, DreamWorks’ Chip Sullivan, New Regency’s Amy Israel, attorney Linda Lichter and Icm’s Ron Bernstein were among the revelers. Sunday, I interviewed Peter Jackson and attended the Lovely Bones press conference. … »

Forlani In Dispute With Art Dealer

21 August 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actress Claire Forlani is facing a legal battle with an art dealer who alleges the star ruined his credibility.

The unnamed specialist alleges the Meet Joe Black actress destroyed his "fragile and intangible" reputation by making false claims about his business practices in a mass email to friends.

In his defamation lawsuit, the dealer has accused the Brit of writing an "almost 500-word poison-pen note" in which she allegedly claimed he sold her counterfeited works, passing them off as pieces by famed artists Keith Haring and William Claxton.

She was also said to have accused him of overcharging her for works by pop artist Andy Warhol.

He insists he is innocent of the claims, but has been so wronged that "only a very large damages judgment can begin to remedy" his bruised reputation, according to legal documents obtained by TMZ.com.

A lawyer for Forlani says, "This lawsuit is absurd and totally without merit. We are very confident that the court will throw out the suit." »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: S1m0ne

6 July 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had »

Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher' Coming in 3-D

19 May 2009 3:37 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

For years, the work of Edgar Allen Poe has been adapted into motion pictures, and there's a new 3-D version of his The Fall of the House of Usher on the way. MTV reports that the title of the new film will be shortened to The Ushers, and will star Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott, and Rufus Sewell.

This short story in particular has been a popular one for Hollywood to tackle, especially for Roger Corman, who has made, like, half a dozen Poe-inspired films. House of Usher is certainly one of Poe's best, and like most of his work, it lends itself to being a film...a very, very dark film with an oft-imitated ending. »

New ‘Fall Of The House Of Usher’ Film ‘The Ushers’ To Be Shot In 3-D

19 May 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Hollywood loves Edgar Allen Poe, and they love his story “The Fall of the House of Usher.” They love it so much that they’re going to make yet again, despite the story having a silver screen legacy that spans more than 10 variant adaptations. On the heels of a new Poe-inspired “Tell-Tale Heart” movie starring Josh Lucas, the latest adaptation of “The House of Usher” will be shot in 3-D bearing a simplified title: “The Ushers.”

Produced by Green Knight Ventures, “The Ushers” will star Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott and Rufus Sewell, with Stephen Kay attached to direct, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Green Knight is thus far best known for their Colin Firth crime thriller “The Meat Trade.”

The vast library of “Fall of the House of Usher” movie adaptations most famously includes Vincent Price in the lead role of Roderick Usher for Roger Corman’s 1960 film. As »

Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher Goes 3D

Indie producer Green Knight Ventures will film a contemporary adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher". The film will star Dougray Scott (Ever After), his real life wife Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) and Rufus Sewell (The Illusionist.) When I read that Poe's  "The Fall of the House of Usher" would be made into a film I was intrigued.  We're talking claustrophobic old house, possible live burial, haunting, insanity, and a family curse. Yes, it has it all. But then, alas, I read it will be a contemporary version set in Martha's Vineyard, titled The Ushers which unfortunately makes me think of old ladies dressed in black with white doily collars guiding theater goers to their seats at Broadway shows. The Ushers, brother and sister, Roderick and Madeline live in the family manse which is suffering from some serious physical decay. Think Grey Gardens without Big and Little Edie. An »

More Ushers Heading to the Big Screen

18 May 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Despite the fact that two adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher have been produced in the past three years, indie production company Green Knight Ventures seems convinced that they’ve got a fresh approach to the classic tale.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Claire Forlani, Dougray Scott (both pictured), and Rufus Sewell will star in The Ushers, a 3D horror flick that follows a grown brother and sister who have lived in the same Martha's Vineyard house for a long time but begin to feel trapped there, and who then bring in a real estate broker to help them resolve their crisis.

The premise may sound a bit horror-shy in these early stages, and the 3D gimmick is already beginning to feel stale, but we’ll keep you updated with the latest as soon as we get it.
