Kusturica sees grim times for cinema

21 December 2009 12:54 AM, PST | Hindustan Times - Cinema | See recent Hindustan Times - Cinema news »

Emir Kusturica walked on to the stage and declared that he was happy he had turned out to be a movie-maker and not the gangster his parents feared he would grow into. The audience gathered to watch him conduct the master class at the recent Marrakech International Film Festival was immediately drawn to the Serbian director’s charisma. It found him irresistible as he went on, twinkle in his eye and the magic in his voice casting a mesmeric spell on the listeners here that evening. Beyond this alluring persona lay a string of movies that were masterful – and, well, »

Depp Gives Singer/Songwriter Babybird A 2010 Boost

6 December 2009 3:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Johnny Depp has given British hitmaker Babybird a big boost by insisting the singer/songwriter's 2010 album Ex-maniac will be the album of the year.

The movie star was asked to list his 'Essentials' for U.S. magazine Entertainment Weekly and admits he already can't live without his friend's new album.

Depp says, "He's a national treasure, if you're British. For everyone else, he's a diamond waiting to be found. Lyrically, he's black as night, brilliant and sharp as a razor."

The Pirates of the Caribbean star also listed longtime partner Vanessa Paradis' latest album, Divinidylle, among his favourites, calling it "the most beautiful soundtrack to our life en famille".

And there's also mention of his onscreen Pirates father Keith Richards' Unknown Dreams and Rum, Sodomy & The Lash by The Pogues.

Depp also namechecks Emir Kusturica's Time of The Gypsies and Underground among his favourite films, calling the Serbian filmmaker, "one of the last true auteurs". The actor is in talks to play Mexican bandit revolutionary Pancho Villa in Kusturica's next film.

Also on the star's top film list: his own Ed Wood, Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law and cult British movie Withnail & I, which he can freely quote.

He adds, "(That's) probably the funniest f**king film I've ever seen." »

Johnny Depp Saddles Up To Ride With Pancho Villa

5 December 2009 10:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One upon a time there was a young actor named Johnny. Johnny was an actor who liked to take risks and star in off-beat films. The major studios were wary of Johnny and they liked to play with more popular actors – people like Tom. Then one day Johnny signed on to star in a film based on a Disney theme park ride. The film was a huge success and suddenly Johnny found himself starring in large budget films and accepting huge pay checks.

It now looks like Johnny Depp may have rediscovered his odd-ball roots as the star is now eyeing up a role as Pancho Villa alongside Salma Hayek in Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers.

Is Depp’s casting as the Mexican revolutionary and the title not strange enough for you? How about the fact the film will be filmed in Spanish?

Johnny Depp: Revolutionary

4 December 2009 4:28 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Johnny Depp has made a name for himself as an actor largely due to his ability to fully take on the character he’s playing, which adds a dimension of believability to his portrayal 0f the role. This talent should serve Depp beautifully in his next potential role, Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.

While Depp hasn’t officially signed on to play the hero, he is in advanced talks to join director Emir Kusturica on the biopic Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers. This isn’t the first time the two have worked together, having joined forces on 1993’s Arizona Dream. Salma Hayek is also in talks for the film.

The script for Seven Friends is based off of a biographical novel about Pancho Villa, which tells how Villa and his friends were known for their fighting and robbing the rich also spent time dancing, partying and making love. »

Is Johnny Depp the right actor to play Mexican hero Pancho Villa?

4 December 2009 3:26 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Variety reported yesterday that Johnny Depp, one of our recently anointed Entertainers of the Decade, is in negotiations to star in Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers, a Spanish-language biopic of the Mexican revolutionary. Depp is a famous chameleon, able to slip in and out of distinct roles so well that I sometimes have difficulty realizing it’s him (call it a lack of Depp perception - ha!), but does he have it in him to play another nationality in another language? Especially a character as iconic as Villa? I have faith in the actor, »

Johnny Depp Goes From Jack Sparrow To Pancho Villa In New Biopic

4 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Captain Jack Sparrow isn't the only daring adventurer in Johnny Depp's repertoire, as the actor plans on bringing his own unique spin to the historical Mexican revolutionary hero Pancho Villa.

According to Variety, Depp will star as Villa in an upcoming biopic titled "Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers," which is easily one of the longest, most terrific titles I've heard for a prominent film in the past couple of years.

Depp will share the screen with Salma Hayek, who is in "advanced talks" to star in "Pancho Villa," most likely as the titular woman with six fingers. Does that mean she only has six fingers total, or six fingers on one hand ala "The Princess Bride"? All six fingers are crossed for the latter.

The film comes courtesy of Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica and screenwriter Gordan Mihic, based on the novel "The Friends »

Johnny Depp as Pancho Villa?

4 December 2009 9:03 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

In some circles the name of this new Johnny Depp project is getting trashed, but I kind of like it: Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman with Six Fingers. Variety indicates that Depp is in serious talks to star in the film, written and directed by Emir Kusturica, and he'll play the part en Espanol.

I think the title will probably be reduced to just Seven Friends of Pancho Villa because it has apparently secured the attention of The Sexiest Man Alive, who is also a major movie star. There's an opportunity to sell Depp as the revolutionary Mexican leader (and by sell, I mean tickets), so a cutesy title probably won't be allowed to stand in the way of that. »

Johnny Depp as Pancho Villa? Okay, but What about the Woman with Six Fingers?

3 December 2009 7:36 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

So, here’s another story about Johnny Depp in negotiations to star in another major movie. What’s so special about that? Johnny Depp stars in 40 movies a year, give or take a couple. This one is called “Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers”, and Depp is in talks to play the murdered real-life Mexican revolutionary hero Pancho Villa, though I’m more curious who is going to play the woman with six fingers of the title, and will she actually have six fingers? That’s just so … wow. A woman with six fingers. Imagine the possibilities. I bet she could load guns faster and everything. In any case, Depp is said to be in “advance talks” with Serbian director Emir Kusturica to star in “Pancho Villa”. Besides Depp in the title role, Mexican spitfire Salma Hayek is also in talks to co-star, one presumes »

Catchy! The director and his co-writer Gordan Mihic based their script on James Carlos Blake's novel The Friends Of Pancho Villa, which chronicles both the man's life of fighting the good fight, robbing the nasty rich and making with the sweet lady-pleasing love. Will Depp Ride With "Pancho Villa"...?

Serbian director Emir Kusturica is negotiating to hire actor Johnny Depp to play strong-arm Mexican revolutionary 'Pancho Villa' for the Spanish-language biopic "Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers."

The film will be lensed in Mexico where Villa lived.

Screenplay was written by Kusturica and Gordan Mihic, based on the biographical novel "The Friends of Pancho Villa".

José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, aka 'Pancho Villa', was one of the first Mexican Revolutionary generals. As a commander of the 'División del Norte' (Division of the North), he was in charge of the Northern Mexican state of Chihuahua which, given its size, mineral wealth, and proximity to the Us, gave him great power among the locals.

Us General John J. Pershing tried to capture Villa after a year in pursuit, but Villa and his supporters, aka 'Villistas', used firing squads against their enemies, seizing hacienda »

Johnny Depp Will Be Pancho Villa for Director Emir Kusturica

3 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

When I see that Johnny Depp is in talks to play Pancho Villa in Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers, I don't get terribly interested. Then I see that the film is planned as a Spanish language production, and that Depp would act in Spanish. Finally, there's the director: Emir Kusturica, who directed Depp in Arizona Dream, one of the actor's early feature starring roles. (An odd piece of film that, I think, has never had a proper DVD release in North America.) With all those details in place, the project is a lot more interesting. Too bad we're not likely to see it for two years. Due to Depp's packed schedule, 2011 is likely the earliest the picture can shoot, says Variety. But Kusturica and Depp seem to be planning on making it happen, potentially with Salma Hayek to co-star. The film would loosely adapt »
