Our Spidey sense is tingling. Just a few months ago, Tobey Maguire told us he was ready to don the Spider-Man suit again in March for the film's fourth installment, which was looking at a May 2011 release. Now it looks like Spider-Man 4 is facing a foe worse than Doc Ock: a rejected screenplay. Somewhere along the line Marvel's record-breaking franchise hit a huge snag, reports Hollywood insider Nikki Finke. Director Sam Raimi is reportedly dissatisfied with the Spider-Man 4 script thus far, and without a script, filming on the long awaited movie has been put on the back burner. Spider-man 4 Start Date Pushed Back, Release Date Now Uncertain; Could Film Be in 3D?

1 hour ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The next installment of the Spider-Man franchise could lose its coveted May 11, 2011 opening (due to script problems).  Director Sam Raimi has yet to settle on a script, a process that has already involved screenwriters Jamie Vanderbilt, David Lindsay-Abaire, and Gary Ross.  Currently in the hands of Alvin Sargant, who wrote Spider-Man 2 and 3, Sony is still planning on a Summer 2011 release but studio sources are saying, “It is unlikely that May 11, 2011, date will be made.”

Originally set to start filming in February, production was pushed back to early March then late March or early April.  Currently there is no official start date.  While Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal assured fans they were still working toward the original date saying, “I’m going to do everything I can to make May,” she acknowledged the importance of having a completed script, “…I’m not going to start a movie where the script isn’t right yet. »

'Spider-Man 4' Sources Confirm Release Date Uncertain, Script Still In Progress

2 hours ago | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Last month, a report hit the 'Net that "Spider-Man 4" production had been put on "indefinite hold" due to problems with the script — specifically, the choice of villain for the next chapter in the Sony Pictures franchise. Asked for comment on the report, the studio confirmed that production had indeed halted for the holidays, but denied that there was anything endangering the project's production schedule. Now, it seems, the story has changed yet again.

According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, production continues to be stalled on "Spider-Man 4" due to a difference of opinion between director Sam Raimi and the studio over the film's script, and now the film could miss the mark for its intended May 5, 2011, release date.

This report has been partially confirmed to MTV News by an informed source close to the film who said a May 2011 premiere has now become uncertain, and significant work is »

'The Hobbit' Casting Breakdowns Reveal Details About Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield And More!

8 hours ago | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

While we're still not sure what Bilbo Baggins hates — other than chipped glasses, cracked plates, blunted knives and bent forks, of course — we're a bit closer to learning what Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson are looking for in their titular Hobbit.

A casting call for "The Hobbit," featuring breakdowns of several of the movie's main characters, is making the rounds online courtesy of Spoiler TV. Those of us who have already read J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel — or at least have seen that hilariously wonderful cartoon adaptation — already know a good deal about some of these characters, but it's nonetheless a treat to see the breakdowns in print.

Bilbo, for instance, is accurately described as a "well-to-do, respectable Hobbit," who has an unknown wealth of courage, sense of humor and practicality. Of all of these characteristics, Bilbo's strongest trait is "his humanity; he is empathetic with a big heart and generous spirit. »

Our own experts -- the forum moderators -- predict Golden Globe winners: Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep & Robert Downey Jr.

4 January 2010 4:36 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Unlike the 19 pro pundits who weighed in with Golden Globe predictions, 7 of our forum moderators think that the main competition for "Up in the Air" as best drama picture is "Inglourious Basterds" rather than "Avatar."  While the pros were almost evenly divided as to the winner of the drama movie actress -- with a slim majority going with Carey Mulligan ("An Education") -- our moderators are firmly on the side of Sandra Bullock ("The Blind Side"). Neither the pros nor the moderators can agree on who will win drama movie actor or comedy/musical movie. As with all but one of the pros, our moderators agree that Meryl Streep ("Julie & Julia") will win comedy/musical movie actress. However, almost all of our moderators are backing Robert Downey Jr. ("Sherlock Holmes") to win comedy/musical movie actor while the pros spread their predictions around all five contenders.

Poll: Will George Clooney or Jeff Bridges win the Golden Globe for best drama actor?

4 January 2010 10:18 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The Golden Globe battle for best drama actor is a slugfest pitting odds-on-favorite Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart") and George Clooney ("Up in the Air") against Colin Firth ("A Single Man"), Morgan Freeman ("Invictus") and Tobey Maguire ("Brothers"). Predicting the outcome is a head-scratcher. Most pundits are betting on Bridges or Clooney, which is probably right, but no one should wager too much on the Globes. They're predictably unpredictable. Sometimes voters like to take a surprising art-house turn, which would favor Firth now. Just like the Oscars, Globe voters are often suckers for famous actors who portray other famous people, which would benefit Freeman as Nelson Mandela. Maguire shouldn't be written off because he's done something »

‘Mothman Prophecies’ Director Heading to ‘The Orphanage’

4 January 2010 5:14 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It seems that the Spanish-language horror film El Orphanato is headed the way of Let the Right One In: the unique ghost story, only three years old (and not under-appreciated in the U.S.) is now getting a remake in the States.

The saving grace of the remake will be the same face that ushered the original film into the limelight: producer Guillermo Del Toro, who also wrote the script with Larry Fessenden. Apparently Fessenden has been working on the film for a couple years now:

The Orphanage was two years of waiting. Working on the script with Guillermo was a very exciting experience, but then I got into a casting miasma and that’s where the thing is; I think they’re gonna do it another way, actually. So I think I’m out of it. Hopefully they’ll still use my script, but I’m not sure I’m directing it anymore. »

23 Movies Worth Saving (From the First 23 Years of My Life)

2 January 2010 1:16 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

With the Library of Congress’ recent announcement of the 25 films being added to our National Film Registry for 2009, I was inspired to look back over some of the films that haven’t yet been included. In doing so, I noticed there are many films from my lifetime that deserve eventual recognition. The National Film Preservation Board selects up to 25 films each year to be included in the Registry, so I have selected 23 yet unselected films from my lifetime (one for each year) that I would like to nominate for 2010… in fact, I’ve actually submitted my list of nominations to the National Film Preservation Board, as they encourage the public to do. More info on this can be found at their website.

This list of 23 films spans my lifetime, which means they fall between my year of birth (1978) and the new cut-off year which is 10 years back (2000). This is Not »

January's Tracking Shot makes up for a lack of production in December - and at the top of the productions that are beginning this month we find George Clooney toplining Alexander Payne's The Descendants for Fox Searchlight. Casting is still underway with this project - and I guess we'll be hearing more from it in the next couple of weeks. - Our very first feature of 2010, is an item which we begin at the top of every month.
