Discuss: Should DirecTV Use 'Poltergeist' Kid to Make Money?

8 October 2008 10:02 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

As we all know by now, the Poltergeist series brought eeriness both on and off the screen with the Poltergeist Curse. Real human skeletons were used, exorcisms were performed, props malfunctioned, fire blazed, and of course, people died -- the most infamous being the passing of the cute, tow-headed Heather O'Rourke.

And now she's being used to sell DirecTV units. Classy. Craig T. Nelson is back to give the spiel, but the above commercial also uses her famous "They're here!" line and a little girl to pose as O'Rourke to walk to the foot of the bed (O'Rourke's voice is apparently dubbed in).

In a world where even impassioned musical critiques can be turned into patriotic anthems, it's not completely surprising that this is happening. But still -- using a little girl who died way too young to make money -- it's not the best decision, and it certainly isn't

"Poltergeist" to get a director?

2 September 2008 1:18 AM, PDT | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

Vadim Perelman is apparently in talks to helm MGM's "Poltergeist" remake. Writers Juliet Snowden and Stiles White signed on last week to work the new screenplay of the 1982 frightening classic directed by Tobe Hooper and starring Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Dominique Dunne, Heather O'Rourke and Oliver Robins. Steven Spielberg co-wrote the original film. The story told of the Freeling family's ordinary home which suddenly becomes a gateway for enraged ghosts who snatch away the young daughter Carol Anne. Their only hope is in hiring paranormal experts. Perelman helmed 2003's "House of Sand and Fog" and last year's "The Life Before Her Eyes."

Vadim Perelman Indeed Lining Up for 'Poltergeist' Remake

2 September 2008 12:02 AM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

"House of Sand and Fog" helmer Vadim Perelman is one step closer to tackle the "Poltergeist" remake. Rumored earlier that he has been considered to come aboard the reboot of the 1982 horror movie classic, the Academy Award-nominee has been confirmed to be in negotiations with MGM to helm the project.

If he were indeed signed in, Perelman will be collaborating with screenwriters Juliet Snowden and Stiles White since the scribe pair have been hired weeks earlier to revamp the horror movie. On his other movie projects, previous report has noted that he has been attached to "Atlas Shrugged", an adaptation movie from Ayn Rand's novel starring Angelina Jolie.

The original "Poltergeist" movie has been directed by Tobe Hooper and starred by Heather O'Rourke and Dominique Dunne among others. Centering the story on the haunting of a suburban family home by evil spirits, it was released on June 4, 1982 and is

Vadim Perelman in Talks to Direct 'Poltergeist' Remake?

30 August 2008 7:03 AM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

I haven't quite processed the notion of a Poltergeist remake just yet -- it still seems more conceptual than actual to me. Yet the fact that they've picked a pair of screenwriters, and that the late Heather O'Rourke has condemned the remake from the grave, tell me that it's about as actual as it gets. Now Bloody-Disgusting has started a rumor that Vadim Perelman -- quasi-arthouse director of House of Sand and Fog and The Life Before Her Eyes -- is in "heavy talks" to direct the new movie. That would be a heck of a contrast to the screenwriters of Boogeyman.

I'm as down on this project as everyone else -- the original film is a moment in time that ought not be disturbed -- but I like the idea of Perelman, mostly because I like the notion of otherwise "respectable" directors trying their hand at genre films. His brooding,

'Poltergeist' Remake, Good or Bad?

20 August 2008 11:57 PM, PDT | From Rope Of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Juliet Snowden and Stiles White are set to pen a remake of the classic 1982 triple-Oscar nominated PG-rated Poltergeist. Snowden and White previously wrote the cheesy horror flick Boogeyman and will now attempt to improve(?) upon the film previously co-written by Steven Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, but is it really necessary or even a good idea? Personally I think one of the things that made the original film so good was Zelda Rubinstein as Tangina, a character I don't think should even be in the remake if they really want it to be taken seriously. I think it would be unfair to even try and recreate Rubinstein's performance and thus should earn the film a new paranormal expert, The Orphanage proved it could be done with a fantastic and subdued performance by Geraldine Chaplin as Aurora. Then again, I guess it depends on what they are going for.

'Poltergeist' Remake to Be Penned by 'Boogeyman' Scribes

19 August 2008 11:47 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Reliving the horror of the classic 1982 scary movie from notable filmmaker Steven Spielberg, MGM move forward with their plan on remaking "Poltergeist". The studio have now signed a pair of screenwriter Juliet Snowden and Stiles White to make some reworks on the reboot project's script.

This project won't be the two's first horror movie project. In fact, Snowden and White have been known to be the specialists on this movie genre. They are known for their work in Sam Raimi-produced 2005 horror film "Boogeyman". They have recently hired to develop the remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 horror thriller, "The Birds".

Considerably one of the most scariest movies ever made, the original "Poltergeist" tells the creepy story of a family home being haunted by a band of ghosts. Though firstly the spirits appear to be friendly, they soon turn evil putting the family in constant fear and eventually kidnap the family's youngest daughter.
