Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.
The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

Vancouver-lensed "2012", directed by Roland "Independence Day" Emmerich, has become the top movie hit of all time in China, earning 460 million yuan ($67.3 million), according to the state film body, China Film Group.
Opening November 13 on 1,900 screens, audiences reacted positively to the pro-China subplot in which the Chinese build arks to save a portion of humanity.
With 4,500 screens available, China enforces a quota of 20 foreign movies allowed each year on a revenue-sharing basis, rather than a flat-rate that the Hollywood studios prefer.
"2012", in which every available performer in Vancouver worked on in some capacity, (including yours truly as an 'Ark Boarding Officer'), uses 'end-of-days' prophecies to depict the world's demise after a solar meltdown.
The ensemble cast includes actors John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Woody Harrelson, following the aftermath of a global cataclysm in the Year 2012, leading to the 'end of the world', with survivors struggling for their lives. »

As Ted continues to date his way through New York City, How I Met Your Mother fans have been wondering for years who the title character of the CBS show will be.
Finally, Himym co-creator Carter Bays says Ted is getting close to the real thing. But does that in turn mean the end of the comedy? Or just a new cast member?
Here's what Bays tells TV Guide Magazine about that and more ...
On the show's recent Golden Globe nomination: "There is a tendency for the creator of the show to think that no one's actually watching. I feel less like the creator of the show and more like its biggest fan because I like to see what's going to happen each week. So you forget it's actually being broadcast and pumped through cable wires across the world."
On Neil Patrick Harris' directing efforts: "He just directed last week's episode, »

Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

"How I Met Your Mother" has released a slew of photos from its musical 100th episode, and to paraphrase Barney Stinson, it looks kind of awesome.
The episode will find Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) contemplating giving up his beloved suits for the only thing that makes him happier -- scoring with a woman, in this case an attractive bartender played by guest star Stacy Keibler. The conflict within him builds to the point where he has no choice but to express himself in song while hanging from a light post:
The rest of the cast joins in as well.
The episode will also feature guest star Rachel Bilson as Ted's (Josh Radnor) new flame, Cindy. They go out for dinner, an act that CBS says will bring Ted "one step closer to meeting the future mother of his kids."
"How I Met Your Mother's" 100th episode airs Jan. 11. More pictures below. »

Neil Patrick Harris is adding "director" to his list of skills.
Harris is stepping behind the camera to direct an episode of "How I Met Your Mother" this week. The episode features guest star Amanda Peet as one of Marshall's (Jason Segel) co-workers.
"Directing 'Himym' this week. Equal parts overwhelm, education, and exhilaration," Harris tweeted Thursday night. "But directing while acting in a scene - very strange. Meta."
The episode, which will likely air Jan. 18, will mark Harris' debut as a director. It will also be a rare "Himym" installment not directed by Pamela Fryman, who has helmed all but a handful of the 97 episodes that have aired so far.
Peet -- who Harris touted as a possible guest to reporters shortly before she signed on -- will play an attractive colleague of Marshall's at Gnb in the episode. Marshall then gets upset when Lily (Alyson Hannigan) refuses to get jealous of her. »

CBS' video mashup of a beloved Christmas special and "How I Met Your Mother" has sparked outrage among family-values types for putting Barney Stinson's words into Frosty the Snowman's mouth.
To those people upset with the video, we'd like to offer our thanks, because it might not have come to our attention otherwise.
"Frosty the Inappropriate Snowman" takes clips from the original "Frosty" and the lesser "Frosty Returns" (both of which air Dec. 18 on CBS) and combines them with some of Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) racier dialogue from "Himym." The result is -- to our eyes and ears, anyway -- a funny, grown-up remix that has Barney-as-Frosty talking about bro's night at a strip club and his porn collection.
Good for the little ones? Well, no -- but it's also not intended for them. It's a little holiday cheer for "Himym" fans, and in that context, it works just fine. »

Director Roland Emmerich' $200 million-budgeted, Vancouver-lensed disaster picture "2012", has so far grossed $148,958,486 domestic and $451,300,000 foreign for a worldwide total of $600,258,486 in 3 weeks.
According to reports, Emmerich received a 'traditional' $20 million advance against 20 percent of the first-dollar gross profits to make the picture. He owned the script, produced the film and directed, offering a take it or leave it deal with Sony/Columbia.
Some estimates peg Emmerich' take (so far) as $100 million.

Premise of the feature is inspired by theories that posit the ancient Mayans predicting a doomsday event occuring during the 2012 winter solstice.

On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.
The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.
