He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Dramatic Play in 1951, for his starring performance as Rubashev in the stage version of the novel "Darkness at Noon".

Recorded Alfred Tennyson's poem "Enoch Arden" for Columbia Masterworks records. This version featured a piano accompaniment by Richard Strauss, played by Glenn Gould. It has recently been released on a Sony Masterworks CD.

Recorded several Bible stories adapted for children for Capitol Records, including "Noah and the Ark" and "The Story of Jesus". Released on a two-disc set in 1955 as "The Bible Speaks to Children". They have so far not been issued on CD.
