Robots and Scientists and Planes (Oh My!)

16 December 2009 7:48 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jose here, to remind you of an underrated gem from 2004.

When I was a child I was addicted to Superman. Not the Christopher Reeve movies and obviously not the weird TV show with Teri Hatcher, but the classic animated shorts from the 1930s. We had a VHS tape which I could watch for hours and hours completely enthralled by the terrific stories, the foreign adventures and even the sense of menace and doom conveyed by Dave Fleischer in under ten minutes.

Years later I had the same feeling watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Kerry Conran's debut film was a tribute to this era which featured giants robots, timeless kingdoms atop the Himalayas, perky reporters and heroines with eye patches.

Everything in the film is CGI, except for the actors, which gives it a retro-futuristic air. With nods to Dave Fleischer, Flash Gordon, Indiana Jones (which is »

Review & Photos: An Evening with Pinewood Legends

8 December 2009 4:51 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

On Saturday I was lucky enough to attend a very special charity evening in aid of the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation. It took place, as you might have guessed at the legendary Pinewood Studios just outside London near Windsor. The event was in aid of the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation, a charity that helps people with disabilities to increase independence and improve life skills.

The event was named the Pinewood Legends evening for a reason. Invited along as guests of the Foundation were:

Roy Button OBE (Senior Vice President & MD of Warner Bros.) Paul Weston (Stunts, Daylight, Superman I, II, III) Terence Clegg (Producer, Out of Africa, A Clock Work Orange) Mike Moran (Movie music score composer) Joss Williams (Special Effects Supervisor on Green Zone, Hell Boy 2, Rambo, The Bourne Ultimatum) Anthony Waye (Producer, Casino Royale) Saeed Jaffrey (Actor, Gandhi) Paul Hitchcock (Producers, Mission Impossible, Firefox)

Two new Eminem songs hit the Internet on Thursday (December 3), both of which are slated for his re-release of his Relapse LP, Relapse: Refill. The album comes out on December 21.

"Elevator" is a satirical look at Em's life: He raps that he can't believe his house is so big that it has an elevator in it.

"I used to sit and goof on the phone with my friend Proof," he sings on the chorus. "That if I went gold/ I'd go right through the roof/ He said, 'What if you went platinum?'/ I'd just laugh at him/ 'That's not happening/ That I can't fathom.' "

After selling millions and millions of albums, of course, Em is living like Tony Montana — well, at least in that they both have lifts in their cribs. In the song, »

How Robin Williams dodged death and returned to the stage

21 November 2009 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

After heart surgery and seven years away from the stage, comedian Robin Williams is ready to storm Broadway with his one-man show

It takes some confidence to extend the Broadway run of your one-man show before opening night, especially a few months after undergoing heart surgery. But then Robin Williams has never been short of nerve. His lengthy career is due in equal measure to the fearless nature of his comedy and to the frenetic energy of his performance: he has a reputation as an entertainer that is built as much on his nerve as it is on his nerves.

Now, after seven years away from the stage, a relapse into alcoholism, a divorce and an emergency operation to replace a faulty valve in his chest, Williams is returning to live stand-up. His comeback show, which opens on Monday, is already one of New York's hottest tickets, and then later »

Comic book writer/artist Al Davison on what was wrong with The Dark Knight, Superman Returns and Watchmen

13 November 2009 3:31 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

We're seeing more and more comic books and graphic novels being adapted for the big screen and, even with varied results at the box office, the trend shows no sign of stopping.

This is largely because established titles come with a devoted fanbase while newer publications are akin to film storyboards that give studios a clear visual idea of the project.

Only recently I have twice reported on a number of comics that are being picked up by film bosses, and you can see those round-ups here and here.

I talked about the craze to comic book writer and artist Al Davison, who runs The Astral Gypsy graphic novels shop and art studio in the Canal Basin here in Coventry.

Al's been writing and drawing comics for 25 years. He is working on the Doctor Who comic (as seen in the image pictured right), which was launched in July, and recently »

'Smallville' . Kandor

9 November 2009 7:50 AM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

This review may contain spoilers. It is always a rare treat when "Smallville" delves into the Superman mythology, and "Kandor" is as momentous and integral an event to the mythos as the death of Jonathan Kent. In a very epic way, we are finally introduced to Maj. Zod (Callum Blue) through a series of flashbacks set on Krypton, and you can't help but feel the thrill of such drool worthy nods to the big screen movie franchise; The rings of imprisonment, the faces of the council and the address of Zod are all familiar elements of the Christopher Reeve outings and help humanize Zod in a way similar to that of Lex Luthor. Of particular note is the sentencing of Jor-El (Julian Sands) for his act of treason, in which Zod steps up to defend his truest friend and a hero of Krypton. Their »

Edward Norton trounced his celebrity rivals in Sunday's New York Marathon, beating the nearest star entrant by more than 20 minutes.

The actor, running to raise money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust, finished in an impressive three hours, 48 minutes and one second - ahead of former E.R. star Anthony Edwards, who trotted home in four hours, eight minutes, and 20 seconds.

Christopher Reeve's son Matthew came in joint third in the showbiz race, crossing the line side by side with Strokes rocker Nikolai Fraiture after four hours, 23 minutes and 36 seconds. Reeve ran for his late father's charity foundation, while Fraiture raised money for a kids' cause.

Alanis Morrisette brought up the rear, finishing just five minutes later, clocking a time of four hours, 28 minutes and 45 seconds - also raising cash for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

Illusionist David Blaine and actress Teri Hatcher were expected to join their showbiz pals in the starting line-up, but pulled out ahead of the race - Blaine for unknown reasons, and Hatcher after coming down with laryngitis. »

Of the 43,741 people who ran the New York City Marathon on Sunday, a handful stood out, both for having claims to fame and for their reasons for running. Alanis Morrissette, former ER doc Anthony Edwards, The Incredible Hulk's Edward Norton and Christopher Reeve's son Matthew battled through the sweat and determination on the streets of the Big Apple, all for a good cause. "It was such a thrill but I'm burnt," Edwards told People moments after crossing the finish line. "I'm totally tired! But that's the point. I'm just so happy that I finished. But tomorrow I'm going to feel happier. »

Reeve Charity Hit With Lawsuit

30 October 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The charity set up by the late Christopher Reeve has been hit with a lawsuit by the organisation's former vice president, accusing bosses of unfair dismissal.

Bruce Morgan has filed papers in New Jersey alleging he was fired from his position at the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (Cdrf) in April, after he stopped work when the group refused to hand over his wages.

Morgan claims the charity's president Peter Wilderotter, who is targeted in the lawsuit, told him "severe cutbacks were imminent" because the company had lost more than $2.3 million (£1.4 million).

Morgan alleges bosses then withheld his wages for three months before dismissing him abruptly in April, violating his employment contract that required six months' notice.

Morgan is seeking lost wages and unspecified punitive damages from the charity, which raises money for spinal cord injury research.

Superman star Reeve lent his name and support to the organisation, originally called the American Paralysis Foundation, after he was paralysed in a 1995 riding accident. Reeve's wife Dana became Chair of the Foundation after the actor's death in 2004, and executives renamed the charity in her honour after she passed away in 2006. »

Int: Chris Massoglia

I have great sympathy for any young actor doing a vampire film that is not Twilight. Chris Massoglia managed to pull off one of my favorite roles from a young adult novel in Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and do it really well. Plus, he looks shockingly like a young Christopher Reeve. I swear, his shoulders got wider as the film went on. Shut up. I'm not a cougar. Ahem. Chris gives us the scoop on vamps without fangs, the novels (read them!) the film is based on, and I »

Superman Reeve's Son To Tackle New York Marathon

15 October 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Late Superman star Christopher Reeve's oldest son, Matthew, is to run the New York Marathon next month to raise cash for his parents' charity foundation.

The 29 year old will join stars like Edward Norton, Anthony Edwards and The Strokes rocker Nikolai Fraiture on 1 November when the big race takes place.

And Matthew Reeves is sure his dead mum and dad will be very proud of his efforts.

He tells In Touch magazine, "My father would probably wonder what happened to his son, who’s this imposter? Hopefully, he’d be impressed."

Documentary filmmaker Matthew and his sister Alexandra were elected to the board of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation the day after their stepmother Dana died, and the marathon man admits he has felt compelled to do all he can for the charity ever since.

He says, "The injury happened to my dad, but all our lives were affected. We just do what we can to help."

The late actor was left paralysed after falling from a horse in 1995. He died in 2004. Dana Reeve lost her battle with cancer two years later. »

Warner Bros has no plans for Superman, screenwriter gives up

16 September 2009 7:08 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

It looks like Superman is dead on the big screen, for the time being at least.

Anyone hoping he would soar again following the recent formation at Warner Bros of a DC Entertainment (Dce) division, tasked with exploiting the potential of DC Comics heroes in other media such as movies, is going to be sorely disappointed.

Diane Nelson, the new president of Dce, told MTV: "We actually don't have any current plans for Superman."

She added: "We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."

This would appear to rule out the rumoured involvement of V for Vendetta director James McTeigue with a reboot of Superman.

In addition, a movie based on the Bizarro version of Superman, an imperfect duplicate with opposite abilities, was earlier this year being developed »

Chris Evans Not In Fantastic Four Reboot

14 September 2009 8:06 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Back in March of this year, we reported on the possible reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Then, at the end of last month that rumor became a fact, as 20th Century Fox is, indeed, moving forward with a reboot of Fantastic Four.

As Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw predicted back in March, a reboot should and will mean that the four actors who portrayed the titular superheroes in Fantastic Four and its sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, will be recast. Although it’s not been talked about/confirmed for Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd or Michael Chiklis, today we get word that Chris Evans won’t be playing The Human Torch again in Fox’s Fantasic Four reboot.

Cinematical got a chance to ask Evans himself about the upcoming FF4 reboot, to which he replied (not in so many words) that we most likely won’t be seeing him »

Chris Evans Not Involved in 'Fantastic Four' Reboot

13 September 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Most comic book fans agree that if there was one really solid thing about the two Fantastic Four films, it was Chris Evans. He was the perfect Johnny Storm! It's a shame when a superhero franchise fails its good performers, and reboots them right out of the picture. I had a chance to ask Evans what he thought about the Fantastic Four reboot, and not only was he gracious enough to answer, he wishes the new franchise nothing but good luck.

"I don't think I'm going to be involved in it. I would imagine a reboot would be -- a reboot! I think they're going to start from scratch and that's the way those movies go. I mean, they're doing it with Red Dawn too. Sometimes they happen quicker than others. Batman there was a big chunk of time, and the new Batman movies are fantastic. Superman, Incredible Hulk. Time travelers: We'll take (Dr.) Manhattan

"It took two years to make," retorted the Time Traveler. "Now I want you clearly to understand that this lever, being pressed over, sends the machine gliding into the future, and this other reverses the motion. The saddle represents the seat of the time traveler. Presently I am going to press the lever, and off the machine will go. It will vanish, pass into future time, and disappear. Have a good look at the thing. Look at the table, too, and satisfy yourself that there is no trickery. I don’t want to waste this model and then be told I am a quack!" -The Time Machine That’s the description of the first time machine to be called a time machine -- little more than a Victorian mechanical bull, although a pretty one, built of brass, quartz and ivory. EW U: Let's do the time warp again!

Welcome to the first class of Jeff "Doc" Jensen's EW University course on time travel as a time-honored sci-fi trope. Coming up this week: additional posts that take a look at memorable movies and TV shows where this favorite conceit plays a starring role, plus a trivia quiz "final exam" and a gallery of our favorite time travelers. As you may have noticed from a summer filled with starcruisers, giant robots, and adamantium-boned mutants, the genre commonly (if imprecisely) called science-fiction is big business, invading and filling the culture's escapist landscape like tribbles, replicants, bunches of alien-hatching pods -- you get the idea.  This week's EW University course is devoted to one of the most popular sci-fi tropes: time travel. And there's been a lot if it lately. One of the year's biggest films, Jj Abrams' Star Trek, hinges on a time-travel plot twist. The forthcoming The Time Traveler's Wife »

Peter Facinelli talks ‘Twilight’ fans and philanthropies

Before making his way up to the set of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse for rehearsals, Peter Facinelli spent his weekend in Dallas, Texas for the TwiCon film festival. Generally regarded as one of the most out-going and fan-friendly celebrities in today's business, Facinelli spent hours signing autographs, taking photographs, and answering fan questions at the convention. Peter Facinelli sat down with us to discuss his work in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Nurse Jackie (and you can read about that here). The discussion took place after his flight in on the red-eye and hours at the autograph table, but Facinelli's sentiments about Twilight fans were no less spirited. "I'm very appreciative of the fandom," he said. "I have kids who are fans of people, so when I see my kids light up at someone that they admire, if that person wasn't receptive to that or turned their back on them, »

Malibu Film Festival Will Open With "Jesse's Story"

The 10th Annual Malibu Film Festival is opening with the story of a gifted young surfer devastated by an accident, but who ended up becoming an inspiration. "Jesse's Story" features music from Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Jason Mraz, G. Love and others.

"Jesse's Story" chronicles the life of 17 year-old Jesse Billauer as he began to rise into an up-and-coming professional surfer until he severed his spinal cord, making him a quadriplegic. As word spread throughout the surfing community, many of Jesses' would-be competitors stepped up to help him. Jesse longed to get back into the water and with the help of nine-time World Champion Kelly Slater and Hurley team member Rob Machado, he was able to do that.

Veteran film director Mark Jacobs spent over eight years working on the film, calling his "true labor of love." "Within the first five minutes of meeting Jesse, I forgot he was in »
