More details emerge on tragic death of Brittany Murphy

22 December 2009 8:58 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter has said the death of Sin City actress Brittany Murphy appeared to be "natural" but the results of detailed tests won't be known for several weeks.

The 32-year-old star was yesterday found unconscious in the bathroom by her mother.

Medics said she had gone into cardiac arrest and she was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. There were no signs of foul play or trauma, said police.

Mr Winter, pictured above being interviewed outside Murphy's Hollywood Hills residence, told a press conference: "It appears to be natural at this time. We do understand she had a bit of medical history."

Reports claim Murphy suffered from asthma and diabetes as well as a heart condition that began in childhood. It's also been reported that prescription drugs were found in the house, which she shared with her British screenwriter husband Simon Monjack, but that no illegal drugs were found. »

Natasha Richardson's sister Joely is moving to New York to be close to Natasha's husband Liam Neeson and his two sons. Natasha died in a tragic skiing accident in Canada in March. Actress Joely (44) says she will move to New York for two months with her daughter Daisy as she tries to come to terms with her sister's death. The move to New York is to be closer to Neeson and her nephews, Micheal (14) and 13-year-old Daniel. “You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. It takes time to put the pieces back together,” she said. When asked if she is coming to terms with her sister's death, Richardson replied: “I don't look at happiness as being a great goal. A sense of peace, definitely, but it's like the seasons. “I think we're meant to have a spring, summer, autumn and winter. »

Obituaries 2009: Natasha Richardson

A spirited actress, who dead from a head injury on 18 March at the age of 45, remembered by the actor who was her long-term friend

Natasha Richardson was her own unique life force. She possessed a high-wire vitality that took you in its arms, shook you, seduced you and cajoled you into living life without regrets. Friendship was an anchor for her. She thrived on bringing friends together. She created occasions full of affection and joy, moments of celebration that sometimes felt like a magical dance. She mixed lethal cocktails (she loved lychee martinis), cooked extraordinary food, was a spontaneously good nurse, laughed and delighted in stories and anecdotes, and had a mischievous ear for a good scandal. She loved to play music and would impatiently search her iPod for exactly the right track for the moment. And she loved to dance. And she loved to watch a movie with friends. »

Irish actor Liam Neeson's sister-in-law struggled after losing Natasha (IrishCentral)

8 December 2009 9:51 AM, PST | IrishCentral | See recent IrishCentral news »

Joely Richardson went into "autopilot" after her sister Natasha Richardson died. The British actress - who lost her beloved sibling earlier this year after a skiing accident in Quebec, Canada - threw herself into her work to help her cope with Natasha's passing but found it difficult because of some uncanny resemblances between her personal life and career. She explained: "A strange autopilot kicks in. Your psyche puts your work day into a different compartment from your private life. I'm not kidding - my first shot back on set was reacting to someone dying." The 44-year-old actress found Natasha's death a massive shock because she had never considered life without her. She told Tatler magazine: "We were such opposites, but completely enmeshed in each other. I hadn't lived a day in my life without her. You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. »

Richardson: 'I Never Imagined Natasha Would Die'

8 December 2009 12:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Joely Richardson has spoken out for the first time since the death of her actress sister Natasha, insisting a day hasn't passed when she doesn't think of her.

Natasha Richardson passed away in March after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in Canada, and the tragedy left her younger sibling Joely heartbroken and "shattered".

And the 44 year old admits she still thinks about her beloved Natasha every day.

She tells Tatler magazine, "We were such opposites, but completely enmeshed in each other... I hadn't lived a day in my life without her. You worry about your children and your elders, but I never imagined such a thing as this. Tash was a given to me.

"So much of what I am is who Tasha was, and I think, sharing all those formative years, there is level of merging... I cannot imagine that there will ever be a day when I don't think of Tasha."

Fans were shocked when Joely returned to the set of TV movie The Day of the Triffids a day after her sister's funeral - but she maintains she needed to work to recover from her loss.

She explains, "The shock shatters you on a cellular level, and it takes time for the pieces to come back together, albeit in a different formation... A strange autopilot kicks in; your psyche puts your work day into a different compartment from your private life. I'm not kidding - my first shot back on set was reacting to someone dying." »

Blanchett's 'Soars' In Streetcar

3 December 2009 11:21 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Cate Blanchett has wowed New York's notoriously tough theatre critics after taking Tennessee Williams' classic A Streetcar Named Desire to the Big Apple.

The actress stars as Southern belle Blanche DuBois in the latest production of the show, brought to New York by the Sydney Theatre Company Blanchett runs with her husband Andrew Upton.

And the Oscar winner doesn't disappoint, according to early reviews of the Brooklyn Academy of Music show, directed by legendary actress Liv Ullmann.

New York Post critic Elisabeth Vincentelli writes, "Blanchett is the big draw. And she delivers."

The New York Times' Ben Brantley goes further, describing her performance as the best portrayal of DuBois he has ever seen.

Brantley gushes, "Cate Blanchett soars spectacularly.

"I have seen (DuBois) portrayed by an assortment of formidable stars including Jessica Lange, Glenn Close, Patricia Clarkson and Natasha Richardson....

"Ms. Ullmann and Ms. Blanchett have performed the play as if it had never been staged before, with the result that, as a friend of mine put it, 'You feel like you're hearing words you thought you knew pronounced correctly for the first time.'" »

The 2008 film "Wild Child" is currently available on DVD.

The movie, available through Universal Studios Home Entertainment, stars young actress Emma Roberts in a role different than much of the family entertainment in which she has previously appeared.

Roberts portrays Poppy, a spoiled 16-year-old living in Los Angeles and enjoying the benefits of being rich and young. Her long history of thoughtless behavior finally comes to a head, leading to her father (Aidan Quinn) shipping her off to a British boarding school. Hating the strict environment of the school, Poppy considers every possible way to get out of it. But trying to get herself expelled is harder than she originally thought, and with a new group of friends, it may not be that bad.

The film, not released theatrically in the United States, also features a British cast including Shirley Henderson, Alex Pettyfer, Nick Frost and the late Natasha Richardson as the school's headmistress. »

Screen Queens: Sally Bowles

8 November 2009 8:27 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!

Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. You can get almost as much pleasure out of Joel Grey and Marisa Berenson's performances, »

• The long lists for the Evening Standard theater kudos saluting the best of London's West End have been released. Jude Law was snubbed for his "Hamlet" at the Donmar Warehouse, but "Doctor Who" star David Tennant earned a nod for playing the desolate Dane at the RSC. Other men in contention include Sir Ian McKellen ("Waiting for Godot") and Kevin Spacey ("Inherit the Wind"). Among those women competing for the newly named Natasha Richardson award for best actress are Deanna Dunagan, for reprising her Tony-winning role as one mean mama in "August: Osage County"; Amy Morton for once more playing Dunagan's put-upon daughter; and Rachel Weisz, who recently wowed as Blanche in a revival »

Liam Neeson Joins Russell Crowe in 'Next Three Days'

5 October 2009 3:39 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Probably because he led the biggest pre-summer movie of the year, Liam Neeson is being sought out for all sorts of roles. The A-Team and Clash of the Titans were big pick-ups for him, and following the shocking death of his wife, Natasha Richardson, Neeson might be looking to work just for the distraction.

Those are kind of larger-than-life movies, though, where a lot of the expectation is for explosions and action. Neeson has just signed on for something that could be a little different. He'll join Russell Crowe in Paul Haggis' new thriller The Next Three Days. Variety has some plot details and more casting news, including Olivia Wilde, Brian Dennehy, RZA, and Daniel Stern.

"Russell Crowe [plays] a teacher whose wife (Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn’t commit," writes the trade. "Several years of incarceration leaves her suicidal and he plots to break her out. »
