This 1966 drama ticks most of the right boxes when it comes to entertaining as well as educating. Pity they didn't let Thomas More be more scatalogical than saintly
Director: Fred Zinnemann
Entertainment grade: B
History grade: A–
Sir Thomas More was a lawyer and scholar at the court of King Henry VIII. As a devout Catholic, he had serious reservations about the king's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and remarriage to Anne Boleyn. He was found guilty of high treason and executed in 1535. In 1935, he was canonised as St Thomas More.
Marriage
Luck and Tudor obstetrics have failed to provide Henry with a son. He blames the queen, and wants to dump her. Sir Thomas More (Paul Scofield) is summoned to Hampton Court to see the chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey (Orson Welles). "England needs an heir!" bellows the spherical cardinal, resembling, in his bright scarlet robes and pointy hat, The Attack of the Killer Tomato. »

DVD Playhouse—November 2009
By
Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Chicago – When a New York subway dispatcher finds himself locked in a tense battle of the wits with a deranged criminal onboard Pelham 123, he’s offered this bit of advice from a seasoned hostage negotiator: don’t enter his world. The same warning could be issued to viewers intent on entering the world of Tony Scott. It is a cinematic landscape that is alternately marred and enhanced by Add.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.
The Taking of Pelham 123 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, 2009.

Tony Scott helms the remake of the 1974 film and Denzel Washington and John Travolta take the starring roles from Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. Some things about the .74 version I liked better, but this redo is an enjoyable one. Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) used to be an administrator at the New York transit authority but while an internal investigation goes on because of an accusation of taking a bribe he.s on the dispatcher desk. His day starts off rather monotonously, but as he.s about to get off his shift Pelham 123 suddenly stops still on the digital board. The subway train has been hijacked by a group of armed men led by .Ryder. (John Travolta). »

"Aargh!" "Ahoy, matey!" "Shiver me timbers!" Ok, that's it, I'm out of buccaneer bon mots, which are pretty much essential in order to honor Talk Like a Pirate Day, celebrated annually on September 19. And even those pirate sayings are ones I took from an article on the event in Los Angeles Times, which credits John "Oi' Chumbucket" Bauer and Mark "Cap'n Slappy" Summers for igniting the tradition years ago.
When it comes to movies, the Pirates of the Caribbean series comes trippingly to mind, especially since Disney just announced that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be coming ashore in Summer 2011, with Johnny Depp returning as Jack Sparrow. But it's pretty tough to talk like Johnny Depp -- believe me, I've tried, and gotten my face slapped as a result -- so what other movie pirates can we safely imitate? Here's a quick list: Errol Flynn. I'm working on my Australian accent, »

The show's two new bad guys talk about the upcoming fifth season
Heroes starts up with its fifth season with a special two-hour season premiere on Monday, September 21 at 8 Pm Et on NBC. The series has two new additions in Robert Knepper and Ray Park and the actors recently held a conference call to discuss their involvement in the series. Here's what they both had to say.
So obviously, you know, in the past couple years you guys have both played some really great really iconic characters. Does that help you or does that hurt you when you enter a new project like this?
Ray Park: Oh okay thank Robert. Sometimes it sort of helps for like fan base for other things that I've done but also at the same time it can sort of be - there's a lot more expectation for certain things that I've done in the past. »

Colin reviews the second James Bond film in the series.
For reasons that seem absolutely mystifying to me now, I used to dislike 1963's From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film. I always liked its predecessor, 1962's Dr. No, and I absolutely adored the follow-up, 1964's Goldfinger.
For reasons unknown, I just couldn't get into Russia. I vaguely recall an impression that it was dull and slow moving, but now that I've seen it again, I think I must have watched it on Opposite Day, for the truth of the matter is quite different from my old perception.
In fact, I now feel that Russia is clearly one of the best Bond films. It surpasses Dr. No and definitely rivals Goldfinger and 1965's Thunderball. Man, what was I thinking when I disliked this movie? I guess I'm not infallible after all!
In any case, I find Russia to »

Nazis. They’re the focus of those seeking justice everywhere and have been put squarely in the cross-hairs of one of Hollywood’s newest offerings, Inglourious Basterds, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Quentin Tarantino. In the film, Pitt governs a cavalcade of Nazi-killing talent, providing us with what could be an end-of-summer hit.
However, Inglourious Basterds wasn’t Hollywood’s first dance with epic Nazi ass-kicking.
Nazis have rightly been the recipients of the cinematic hammer of scorn for years and now is a perfect time to showcase some of the best of the best examples of those evil bastards getting what’s coming to them.
Screen Rant is proud to corral some of the greatest silver-screen titles that feature unforgiving Nazi punishment, as we review the “Top 5 Movies Where Nazis Get Owned!”

It's late at night, you've had an adult beverage or two, you fumble with your keys, stumble into your living room, snap on a lamp, and wham! You're face to face with a great white shark, ready to eat you. The latest Jaws collectible isn't quite life-size -- the shark in Steven Spielberg's classic was described as a 25-footer by Quint (Robert Shaw) -- but it's big enough to throw a decent scare into the unsuspecting. According to a press release (available at Dread Central), the "Bruce Ntt piece is a full-length nose-to-tail maquette and dwarfs Sideshow's latest rendition at a little over 3 feet."
This looks pretty awesome. Maybe I could just run around with it, scaring the neighborhood kids. Self-described "finfan" Mike Schultz says he's spent years researching the project; he's a Missouri 911 operator by night and an artisan by day ... No detail, tooth, or scar was ignored in the process. »

There's absolutely no reason why The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 should exist. There already exists a fantastic movie of the same name from 1974, with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. (Check it out, Tarantino took the naming conventions for Reservoir Dogs from this movie). There's a lot of lamentation about unnecessary remakes of films, and this certainly should top the list., While not the most sacred of movies to never remake, it's certainly near the top of the list. That being said, if you ignore that the previous film has been made, and you want to set aside two hours in an air conditioned theate »

DVD Playhouse—July 2009

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

With the release of Tony Scott.s Taking of Pelham 123, and the upcoming Michael Mann film Public Enemies, a lot of people are probably in the mood to check out more heist films (especially considering Scott.s isn.t very satisfying). By now everyone is familiar the big ones like Oceans 11, Heat, Dog Day Afternoon, etc., so here are some lesser-known but equally great films to satisfy your heist jones:The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (Original 1974 version)Obviously the remake is going to raise everyone.s awareness of the original, so it might not be as underrated from now on, but it.s so good that it deserves all the promotion it can get. The plot is basically just like the remake; a grumpy pencil-pushing transit cop (Walter Matthau) is begrudgingly dragged into diffusing a hostage situation when a group of criminals led by mercenary Bernard Ryder/Mr. Blue »

Taking Pelham, Then and Now This past weekend saw the release of director Tony Scott's re-envisioning of Joseph Sargent's 1974 thriller "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three," with Denzel Washington taking over from Walter Matthau and John Travolta subbing for Robert Shaw. We'll examine both the remake and Sargent's original, as well as taking this occasion to take a look back at another crime film from the era, John Boorman's "Point Blank," which itself was remade as "Payback," starring Mel Gibson. Warner Bros.. "The Hangover" and Disney-Pixar.s "Up" again topped the domestic box office weekend, easily beating the debut of "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3."According to Variety, "Hangover" dipped just 26% to an estimated $33.4 million for a total of $105.3 million in its first 10 days. "Up" fell 31% in its third weekend to an estimated $30.5 million for a total of $187.2 million . the second-best domestic gross of any summer film, after Paramount.s "Star Trek."Coming in third was Tony Scott.s "Pelham," starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. The remake of the 1974 action drama starring Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw opened to a solid $25 million. And Eddie Murphy.s bad streak continued when his family film »

1. “The Hangover” ($10.4 million)
2. “Up” ($8.8 million)
3. “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” ($8.3 million)
4. “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” ($3.0 million)
5. “Land of the Lost” ($2.9 million)
Never underestimate the staying power of a good party, even when it comes to the weekend box office. “The Hangover” held onto its top spot (and why not, after that last minute recount?) with another $10.4 million, giving it a 8 day haul of $82.4 million. Weekend audiences clearly want to laugh, enjoy the buzz and avoid Tony Scott’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3″ which looks to be another summer stumble.
The Sony thriller, which stars Denzel Washington and John Travolta, didn’t exactly speed out of the station. Though it’s the newcomer at the multiplex, it couldn’t overtake “Hangover” or “Up,” but opened squarely at #3 with $8.3 million. While it’s the biggest opening Scott has ever had (he hasn’t really knocked one out of the »

There are two conditions for getting maximum enjoyment out of Tony Scott's "re-imagining" of "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" starring Denzel Washington as a dispatcher negotiating with subway hijacker John Travolta.
First, try to put aside memories of the original 1974 movie -- "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw in approximately the Washington and Travolta roles.
Scott's film wisely goes out of its way to »

Adjusting for inflation can be a tricky thing -- especially when it comes to movie remakes.
Take 1974’s “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” which starred Walter Matthau as a hangdog train dispatcher who becomes the central point of negotiation when a gunman (Robert Shaw) takes over a subway train. What are his demands? The lives of his hostages for a million dollars.
Or as Dr. Evil put it in the first “Austin Powers” movie, one ... meeeelion … dollars!
Kinda quaint.
So, in the new version -- which stars Denzel Washington and John Tr »
