Steven Soderbergh continues to be one of the most innovative directors in the business. Sure, that doesn't always lead to quality work, but it does mean that he's trying out insane things that other directors don't. He's hired a porn star to act in a small indie movie. He made a six-hour biopic about a communist activist. He's released movies simultaneously on DVD and in theaters. Now it seems he's trying to break the record for fastest filming. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, while in Australia directing his play Tot Mom, Soderbergh was able to film a mostly improvised movie. This is very similar to the fast, unscripted nature of his films, Bubble and The Girlfriend Experience. There are virtually no details known about the film other than it exists and that it was filmed in Australia. The film is not to believed to have any relation to Tot »

While some directors are perfectly content with making, say, one film a year, others like the Terrence Malicks of the film world prefer to take long hiatuses between their film productions. And then you have guys/cyborgs like Steven Soderbergh who do this... According to The Playlist, Soderbergh, while down in Australia during the month of December directing a play called "Tot Mom", went about shooting an almost entirely improvised feature film using the cast of the »

According to one of the actors in the play he's been directing in Australia, Steven Soderbergh has used the production's cast to shoot a quick 'n' cheap, largely improvised movie that could stand as a third release for him in 2010.Rhys Muldoon, one of the Aussie actors in Tot Mom, which the director worked on late last year with Cate Blanchett's Sydney Theatre Company, has spoken to the Sydney Morning Herald about working on the movie, though he hasn't offered any further details about the untitled pic.Soderbergh never seems satisfied with the lazy, one-film-a-year attitude of some of his peers: in 2009, he released The Girlfriend Experience and The Informant!, plus finally let Che see the projectionist's light outside of festivals and the Us. Now it looks like he really wants to aim for three films made or released in one year - this likely improvised new project, thriller Knock Out and Liberace, »

Steven Soderbergh is a freakin' machine. Just when it seems like he's sick of the whole filmmaking game, he knocks out a little film right under everyone's nose. Last month Soderberg directed a play called Tot Mom for Cate Blanchett's theatre company in Sydney. Based on his own script, the play cast local actors in a drama based on the story of accused infanticide suspect Casey Anthony as presented by CourtTV and CNN personality Nancy Grace. But while working on Tot Mom, Soderbergh reportedly shot an improvised quickie film using much of the same cast. What's it about? Well, um, we don't really know. The Sydney Morning Herald (as noticed by Soderbergh lovers at The Playlist) reveals the existence of the film. Note that the project, which actor Rhys Muldoon says was "pretty much improvised," is reportedly not related to Tot Mom, besides using much of the same cast. »

It was Cristian Mungiu who first introduced us to the clinic cold Vlad Ivanov in 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days -- perhaps the role that convinced other filmmakers to cast the Romanian actor in his expanded repertoire of other films (The Concert, Police, Adjective and The Whistleblower). The two paired together in Mungiu's Tales From the Golden Age - oddly, I'm not entirely sure if Mungiu actually directed the actor - as the portmanteau film doesn't specify who directed what or who directed The Legend of the Chicken Driver. - What do pairings such as Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron, Catherine Keener and Spike Jonze, and Guy Pearce and John Hillcoat all have in common? These are working director-actor relationships that resurfaced in 2009. I've always been a fan of this fermentation process that spans over the course of two or more films – it often produces some fine results and some »

Cate Blanchett will extend one of her most successful roles – as co-director of The Sydney Theatre Company – through to 2013. Blanchett and her husband, the respected playwright Andrew Upton, are halfway through their three-year co-directorship of the company. They recently played A Streetcar Named Desire to great acclaim in the eastern Us. They were reported stating in The Australian newspaper: 'It is a really great privilege to lead Sydney Theatre Company. We hope more and more people, especially those in Sydney, will find their way to the company and join us on this incredible ride.' Their next project, a play titled Tot Mom about an inflammatory Us child murder case and directed by Steven Soderbergh, »

Australian actress Cate Blanchett and her writer husband Andrew Upton will remain artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company until 2013 after pledging a further two years to the firm.
The couple was appointed to the role in early 2008 on a three year contract and the stars have since been credited with bringing the talents of director Steven Soderbergh and actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman to the theatre group, as well as winning the patronage of Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani.
Praising the pair's efforts, Sydney Theatre Company boss Ian Darling says, "In their first two years they've transformed the company and the way many people feel about it.
"I'm pleased they will stay to build on what they have already achieved in terms of quality and diversity of productions, artform development and education."
And Blanchett and Upton are delighted to continue their work with the theatre.
In a statement, the stars say, "It is a really great privilege to lead Sydney Theatre Company. We hope more and more people, especially those in Sydney, will find their way to the company and join us on this incredible ride." »
