Year in Review Part 2: Burn the Negatives!

8 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The title of this post is indefensible, exclamatory (!) and puerile. But these movies piss me off and if they can be super obnoxious, so can I. Now, in truth, I probably never see the absolute "worst" of the movies that play in theaters since I can pick and choose my own film menu. My New Year's Resolution is to be more constructive when I criticize (I'm not giving up criticism. That's mother's milk). I'd also like to be more positive in 2010.

Thus, I retract the titular command: No negatives of the following movies and performances should be incinerated ... instead let them live on as cautionary tales to actors and filmmakers. People are watching. Try harder.

Worst Supporting Actor

I've already expressed my concerned about the "too much!" of Stanley Tucci's continually nominated performance in The Lovely Bones. I don't know what the hell Richard Gere was doing in Amelia, »

Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Year in Review Pt 1: Baffling Comedy and Over Cooked Drama

29 December 2009 7:04 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Part 1 of ??? (Possibly Many) Receive with simplicity everything that happens to you.

~"Rashi" according to A Serious Man.I rarely make time to rewatch movies (so many new and old films to see for the first time) which is a shame since a second look can be valuable. Some critics and civilians are loathe to admit that their minds are changeable or that their opinions aren't the be all/end all, but why? There's always new points of view to consider and life experiences that should shift your paradigms.

Huh?

Before I get to the movies I feel strongly about (i.e. worst and best), I thought I'd share the three which I'm not sure I "got": The Coen Bros A Serious Man, Lars von Trier's Antichrist (my gut reaction) and Jody Hill's Observe and Report.

All three verge on the deeply misanthropic which can be something »

Bartha To Replace Knight On Broadway?

29 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Hangover actor Justin Bartha is reportedly set to replace T.R. Knight on Broadway - making his debut in a revival of Lend Me A Tenor.

Bartha is stepping into the role originally announced for Knight, who dropped out prior to the announcement of dates last week (begs21Dec09), according to a cast listing on Telecharge, the show's official online ticket outlet.

Replacing Knight would mean the actor is set to step into the role of Max - the assistant to the general manager of the Cleveland Opera Company forced to sub for a renowned tenor in a production of Othello. The role was played by Victor Garber in the 1989 Broadway premiere.

Representatives from the production would not confirm Bartha's casting. The revival, directed by Stanley Tucci, is scheduled to open on 4 April. »

Hangover Star to Debut on Broadway

What do you do after a massive Hangover? Why, debut on Broadway, of course. That's what Justin Bartha, a star of this year's big comedy hit is doing, replacing T. R. Knight in the revival of Lend Me a Tenor, to open March 11 in New York City, according to Variety. Bartha, 31, will play a hapless assistant in a Cleveland opera house who has to step in as the star of a production of Otello in the 1930s. He'll be joining actors like Anthony Lapaglia and Tony Shalhoub in the nonmusical play, which will be the Broadway directing debut of Stanley Tucci. »

The Lovely Bones Wide Release Postponed Until January 15

28 December 2009 7:55 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

This won't be news to anyone outside of Los Angeles and New York City who wanted to catch Peter Jackson's newest film over the holiday weekend, but here goes anyway: Paramount has decided to hold off on a wide release of The Lovely Bones until January 15, in the wake of a critical drubbing and a perhaps belated realization that, whoah, there's a lot of competition out there. Instead, according to The Los Angeles Times, the studio will open Bones against new releases like The Spy Next Door and The Book of Eli, assuming correctly that there's a lot of people out there who would rather die than see either new release. It's not the worst strategy ever, even if it's a clear surrender in the Oscar race (other than Stanley Tucci's Best Supporting Actor nod) and an admission that this expensive movie is unlikely to be a hit. »

Best Movies Of 2009, By Kurt Loder

A pretty good year.

George Clooney in .Up in the Air.

Photo: Dale Robinette/ Paramount

It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.

Best Picture:

"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.

Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner, »

DVD Playhouse—December 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, »

This Week on Stage: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury star in 'A Little Night Music'

In the past week, two new shows have opened in New York City: A Little Night Music, a musical revival starring Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones (at left), and The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage. EW reviewers enjoyed both of them. Thom Geier gave A Little Night Music a B+ and said that star Zeta-Jones comfortably commanded the stage "as if it were just another red carpet to be conquered." Meanwhile, Melissa Rose Bernardo also gave The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage a B+ and made the powerful proclamation that »

'The View': Elisabeth Hasselbeck apologizes to Stanley Tucci for awkward question

18 December 2009 1:58 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Elisabeth Hasselbeck made quite the gaffe on Thursday's episode of "The View." She has since apologized to Stanley Tucci. Video below.

When interviewing Stanley Tucci about his new movie "The Lovely Bones," Tucci revealed that his wife Kate was against his taking the villain role because she had read the book.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck then asked Tucci if his wife had seen the movie yet. Except Tucci's wife succumbed to a battle with cancer last May.

Whoops.

Elisabeth then took to Twitter to express how bad she feels and that she apologized to Stanley personally. "it was an honest mistake with stanley tucci today & i called him to apologize. he forgave me (such grace)- if only i could forgive myself..."

You know, we aren't sure what the big deal is. It really seems like Hasselbeck did  just make an honest mistake or maybe she meant that his wife could have »
