- At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. As we get closer to holiday dates productions tend to drop, so this November we are keeping tabs on only a handful of projects. Mike Mills is finally getting to work on his sophomore feature which would see Ewan McGregor play a young man rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Christopher Plummer)…one, that he has terminal cancer, and two, that he’s coming out of the closet. One more name will join the cast - perhaps the age of Brendan Fraser when he was in Gods and Monsters. Filming is set for L.A. Not much production info has been divulged on Darren Aronofsky's next film. Word was that production would begin this month and that »

Kristen Bell is in a lot of pain these days. "I've started dance rehearsals and my neck is sore and my inner thighs are so sore," Bell told me at last night's Vanity Fair-hosted launch of Guess?'s new T-shirt benefiting Invisible Children. No, the actress is not training for a stint on Dancing With the Stars. She's getting ready to start shooting Burlesque, director Steve Antin's upcoming drama in which she and Christina Aguilera costar as rivals at a Hollywood burlesque club owned by a former dancer played by Cher. Rounding out the cast is Twilight stud Cam Gigandet, Julianne Hough and Stanley Tucci. So just how much skin will Bell and the other young starlets be... »

On the same day I sat in the presence of Tilda Swinton (which I already told you about), I also attended the similarly formatted Stanley Tucci event at the New Yorker festival. You can read my article about the experience over at Tribeca. I love that they festooned it with an old Levi's ad of Tucci's. So weird to see him like that.
As you may have noticed in past conversations, I'm fairly fond of Tucci and I've been happy to see his (supporting) star rising. I knew nothing about him personally so the event was my first reveal of what he was like off stage: serious but funny (and punny as the case may be). He's often referred to as a Character Actor which he dubs a redundant term. What they mean is you're not a leading man. It's like saying that someone is heavyset or 'she's a handsome woman! »

Stanley Tucci is having a very good year. This summer we saw him reunited with Meryl Streep, the star of his last big hit The Devil Wears Prada, for another crowdpleaser, the foodie dream Julie and Julia. Next month he's a career tribute honoree at the annual Gotham Film Awards. He'll close out 2009 with a killer role (literally) in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the best seller The Lovely Bones. This weekend he got the interview treatment on stage as part of the annual New Yorker Festival. Did he owe this honor to this career peak year or due to the fact that he's one of the only filmmakers to ever make a movie about the New Yorker itself? (His second directorial effort, Joe Gould's Secret, was about staff writer Joe Mitchell and a New Yorker profile about the eccentric Gould.) It didn't take long for that movie to come up. »

IFP's Gotham Independent Film Awards kicks off the awards season in November each year with an impressive list of nominees, and this year's list is no different. While it includes big names like the Coens for A Serious Man and buzzy films like The Hurt Locker and Big Fan, it also gives deserving nods to smaller films like Amreeka, a wonderful film about a mother and son from the West Bank who move the Illinois. The awards also include tributes to the careers of Natalie Portman, Stanley Tucci, and The Hurt Locker's director Kathryn Bigelow, as well as producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, who both worked on A Serious Man, The Soloist, State of Play, and a slew of other projects.
Previous Gotham winners include Frozen River, Trouble the Water, Into the Wild, Sicko, and Half Nelson, just to name a few. Check out Cinematical's preview coverage of the awards here. »

We have our first batch of conversation starter nominees as nominees were announced this morning for the 19th Annual Gotham Independent Film Award, with Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and Robert Siegel's Big Fan each earning three nominations with The Hurt Locker also set to receive Gotham's tribute award. In addition to the competitive awards, director Kathryn Bigelow, actors Natalie Portman and Stanley Tucci, and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, will each be presented with a career tribute.
While I wouldn't expect Big Fan to do much outside the indie realm, this is a great start for The Hurt Locker as the film, the ensemble and Jeremy Renner were both singled out. Could Renner still land a Best Actor nomination?

If you thought Burlesque topped out on the sexy-o-meter, think again. Former Dancing With the Stars performer and country music singer, Julianne Hough, will join Christina Aguilera and the newly cast Kristen Bell on the upcoming musical. (Three blonds and counting…)
Hough was in rehearsal over the weekend for the role of a <gasp> dancer.
The artist formerly known as X-Tina <shudder> plays a small-town gal who lands at a struggling venue and disrupts the established dance-pack order. No word if Hough will be part of Kristen Bell’s snobby side of elites or Aguilera’s side of “good girls.”
Burlesque also stars Cher and Stanley Tucci and is directed by Steve Antin (Chasing Papi).
The musical will land in theaters in November of 2010.

Is it just me or is the awards race this year a little boring? Nothing is moving the dial as Oscar pundits seem to have had their hands when it comes to tossing out much early praise.
So far the one film that should have everyone standing up cheering is Lee Daniels and Lionsgate's Precious, but I don't even want to speculate as to why people are now only focusing on the negative and wondering if Mo'Nique is killing her Oscar chances. EW's Dave Karger is the latest to bring it up wondering if dirt-digger Roger Friedman's piece on Mo'Nique's demands for appearance fees will hurt her chances. Karger remembers his interview with her from earlier in the year when she said, "Any buzz is appreciated. The NAACP Image Awards, the Oscars, the SAG Award, the award they might want to give me down at the Maxine Waters' Preparatory school, »

I officially declare this the year of Kristen Bell. She's everywhere lately, proving there's a lot more to her than the soothing voice of Gossip Girl, so it's only natural that she'd come out of the shadows of voiceover work — and in a big way.
The Veronica Mars star will be seen in a handful of new movies this season, starting with Couples Retreat, which opened this weekend, and co-stars Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman (who, like Bell, was the star of another insanely amazing television show that for some godforsaken reason only lasted three seasons: Arrested Development).
But enough of dwelling on the past: It was just announced that Bell has been cast as Christina Aguilera's rival in a new musical feature, Burlesque, which also stars Cher, Stanley Tucci and Twilight's Cam Gigandet. But back to the main point: Kristen Bell. Doing burlesque.

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is hotly tipped to receive her second Oscar nomination for her starring role in the “The Lovely Bones.” The young Irish thespian, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her star turn in “Atonement” alongside Keira Knightley, plays the lead role in the movie based on the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold. Ronan plays Susie Salmon, a young girl who is raped and murdered, and watches over her family from heaven. The moving tale co-stars Irish-American actor Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz as Susie’s parents, and Susan Sarandon as the grandmother. Stanley Tucci plays the disturbed man who kills Susie. Since the trailer for the film became available, film critics and movie buff bloggers have been pushing for Carlow born Ronan, 14, to be nominated for the Oscar. “The Lovely Bones,” from “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson, was pushed to a December release to coincide with awards season. »
