Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst Star in Upside Down

22 October 2009 8:46 AM, PDT | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Jim Sturgess, last seen onscreen in the indie drama Crossing Over, has joined Kirsten Dunst to star in Upside Down, a sci-fi film set up at Onyx Films. According to Variety, Upside Down will have a Romeo and Juliet vibe.

Cinematographer Juan Diego Solanas wrote the script and will be directing the film. Shooting is reportedly set to begin in February in Montreal. If so, this may be a tight squeeze for Dunst who will be starting work on Spider-Man 4 in March, if the fourth Spider-Man movie continues on its current schedule.

Dunst recently wrapped work on All Good Things with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Ryan Gosling and based on an unsolved New York murder case. Sturgess just completed work on Peter Weir's The Way Back, a fact-based drama set in Siberia. Sturgess is also part of the voice cast of Zack Snyder's first animated film, Guardians of Ga'Hoole, »

Fantastic Fest 2009, Day 2 - Hard Revenge Milly, Antichrist, The Men Who Stare At Goats

Today’s festival titles I doubt could have been any different from one another.  I had a gruesome revenge thriller, goat staring, and something that demands all kinds of adjectives and discussions. Click the jump for Fantastic Fest Day 2, where you can read my reviews for “Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle”, “Antichrist”, and “The Men Who Stare at Goats”. And keep checking back for more coverage of the Austin, TX genre festival.

Hard Revenge Milly / Hard Revenge Milly: Bloody Battle

This was a double-feature of films that appear to be a continuing series of stories about a woman exacting revenge on the people responsible for killing her family, in the most violent of ways.

There’s not much to this.  A woman is roaming a futuristic, post-apocalyptic landscape initially in search of the men who cut her up, and killed her husband and child.  She’s armed with a retracting, »

Scott Hicks: One Of The Boys

By

Alex Simon

Scott Hicks made his bones as a filmmaker the old-fashioned way, paying his dues as a crew member during the Australian film industry’s birth in the 1970s. Born in Uganda March 4, 1953, and raised in Kenya, England and finally Australia, Hicks worked his way up to assistant director for soon-to-be big names such as Peter Weir and Bruce Beresford before moving into directing industrial films and documentaries for television. Hicks didn’t direct his first feature, Freedom, until 1982, and had to wait for his second, in 1996, to put him on the A-list. Shine was the true story of Australian piano prodigy David Helfgott, and his battle with mental illness. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won a Best Actor statuette for Geoffrey Rush, who played Helfgott as an adult.

Hicks has been choosy since then, going back and »

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Shake, Rattle & Roll!

24 September 2009 7:24 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

It's almost time for an update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.

- - -

- - - These hitlists are more than point of references to our own - they are inspiration to keep us on our feet and come up with a listing that consider all angles. I don't think anyone is naïve enough to list down and rank 50 young actors ( and 50 young actresses) and expect everyone to agree and be happy, »

Stephenie Meyer's The Host Heading to the Big Screen

23 September 2009 11:57 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Twilight series author Stephenie Meyer is about to see another one of her projects up on the big screen, and luckily for us, this one's geared toward adults. Rights to Meyer's The Host have been acquired by producers Nick Wechsler and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz (who also teamed up for John Hillcoat's adaptation of The Road).

Variety reports that Meyer's novel is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves "Souls." One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth.

Andrew Niccol will write the script and direct. [He] first came under consideration after Wechsler and the Schwartzes asked Meyer what her favorite science fiction films are. Gattaca and The Truman Show were in her »

A look back at Sole Survivor (DVD Review)

19 September 2009 8:12 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

An unjustly overlooked '80s horror film that predates the popular Final Destination series, Sole Survivor is a scary, surprising low budget classic.

Denise (Anita Skinner) survives a jetliner crash that kills everyone else on board, but she survives without a scratch. This is shown, with her still buckled in her seat in the wreckage, the other passengers who we just saw alive all mangled and twisted around her.

Because of her survival, Denise feels unworthy, with a strong survivors guilt over living through it. She learns of something known as "sole survivor syndrome", where the one person who makes it through a traumatic incident like this is usually dead within five years after the event, through suicide or a recklessness that puts them in dangerous situations. Jeff Bridges goes through the same feelings in Peter Weir's acclaimed Fearless.

Denise realizes that not all these deaths come from suicide or alcoholism, »

10 Most Unforgettable Peter Weir Movies

Peter Weir's comprehensive profile at Senses of Cinema begins with:

Peter Weir helped to define the rebirth of Australian cinema, while addressing some of the most pressing concerns of the nation in the 1970s and 1980s. His intriguing images of Australia, evocative and transcendent, made an impact in the international art house scene, eager for compelling visions of geo-political areas and cultures overlooked by mainstream cinema. After achieving international recognition as an emblematic Australian filmmaker, Weir made his transition to Hollywood while maintaining a sense of experimentation and artistic exploration . . .[ read more ]

I have to say, Peter Weir's films are so diverse, it's hard to pinpoint exactly his focus as a filmmaker. That is, if he has any intention to focus on certain themes. He has done such an impressive list of movies in many genres - dramatic mystery-thrillers (Picnic at Hanging Rock), comedy-romance (Green Card), action-adventure (Master and Commander »

From the Files of Fangoria: The Cars That Ate Paris

24 August 2009 5:29 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The best part about this unfettered access to Fangoria’s Files is being able to track down those films Academy Award Nominated directors would rather forget.  Sure Peter Weir made us all tear up in front of our girlfriends with such films as Gallipoli, The Truman Show and Witness, but what kind of emotion was he trying to evoke with one of his earlier films, The Cars That Ate Paris from 1974?

The film was released in the Us as The Cars That Eat People. I guess they figured American audiences wouldn’t be that sympathetic to the French.  It took me a good twenty minutes of viewing and language deciphering to realize that the Paris they were referring to was actually a small town in Australia.  At first glance, it looks like Maximum Overdrive meets Herbie The Love Bug with sadly no Emilio or Lindsey.  However, it shares more in »
