The joy of list-making continues today as I’m running down who I thought gave the best performances of the year plus what I thought were the best quotes and kills of 2009.  Please keep in mind that regarding the performances, I haven’t seen a few key films that could have very well changed the winners and runners-up: Crazy Heart (Best Actor), The Last Station and Bright Star (Best Actress), and a few others.  If you think there was someone who clearly should’ve won or been nominated, shout out in the comments section and I’ll let you know whether I saw the film or not.

With this disclaimer out of the way, I present to you my picks for the best performers, directors, quotes, and kills of 2009.  Hit the jump to check them all out.

Weisz Rules As 'Hypatia Of Alexandria'

Sneak Peek the French poster for "Agora", the historical, dramatic feature, directed by Alejandro Amenábar, from a screenplay by Amenábar and Mateo Gil, starring Rachel Weisz .

Co-financed by Spanish-based Sogecable, "Agora" was screened 'Out of Competition' at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, released in Spain in October and in general release through Focus Features, December 18.

"Agora" follows the story of astronomer-philosopher 'Hypatia of Alexandria' (Rachel Weisz) and her relationship with the slave 'Davus', (Max Minghella), who is torn between loving his mistress or gaining his freedom by embracing Christianity.

Although "Agora" was Spain's highest grossing feature of 2009, the film has not yet found distribution in Italy because of its controversial, religious subject matter.

Mark Wahlberg Too Emotional While Playing His Role In ‘The Lovely Bones’

22 December 2009 7:38 AM, PST | Gossipvita | See recent Gossipvita news »

The actor found the experience of shooting the film – about a murdered girl looking down on her family in limbo – so emotional that it also affected his home life. Mark is “still learning to juggle” the emotions of his role as Jack Salmon, the father of the murdered girl. The soon to be father-of-four said: “I would just grab my daughter and hold her, and I would start crying. “She’d be like, ‘Daddy, what’s wrong?’ She just wanted to play. “I would try to talk to her about taking care of herself and not talking to strangers. “She was three at the time. But, thankfully, I had another movie to go to that helped me get out of that.” Mark, 38, also praised his co-star Rachel Weisz for being so in control of her feelings, saying she has an ability to “just snap into it and have these floods »

Best Movies Of 2009, By Kurt Loder

A pretty good year.

George Clooney in .Up in the Air.

Photo: Dale Robinette/ Paramount

It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.

Best Picture:

"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.

Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner, »

Dave Allocca/Startraks

The subject matter of The Lovely Bones was disturbing for millions of parents, but for the actors charged with the task of bringing the bestselling book to life, even more so.

Mark Wahlberg — a soon-to-be father-of-four — praises costar Rachel Weisz for her ability to “just snap into it and have these floods of emotion coming out and then turn it all off.” By contrast, Mark says that because of the way he approaches his job “he had to live in that head space for the entire time.”

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

Movie Review: The Lovely Bones (2009)

Saoirse Ronan in The Lovely Bones

Photo: Paramount Pictures As mud flies with every smashing turn of a battered safe pushed to its final resting place, I came to realize Peter Jackson's The Lovely Boneswas the very best film he could make out of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel. This, though, doesn't mean he ended up with a fantastic film. In fact The Lovely Bones is a perfectly fine film that never stalls and truly shines inside its technical efficiency, but it seems to lack something of a human element, muting the overall result. I can't blame this on Jackson or anyone involved; I never thought this was a book that could perfectly translate to the big screen. As a result I can't imagine anyone being entirely disappointed as much as you will walk away plainly amused and slightly entertained.
