This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. He's been portrayed onscreen and stage by famous thespians like Richard Burton and Frank Langella, usually in stories connected to his estranged brother's assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Will someone play him in the Spielberg helmed Lincoln film?

At first glance, writer/director Gary Lundgren's Calvin Marshall could be mistaken for just another "baseball movie," but this poignant and humorous film delivers much more. Baseball is the focus of the main character, yet the heart of this film, which had its world premiere at Austin Film Festival, is more about passion and human nature.
Title character Calvin (Alex Frost) lives and breathes baseball, getting up before dawn to practice -- unfortunately it's a lost cause, as he just doesn't have the skills for the local junior college baseball team. Despite his gruff exterior, the team's head coach (Steve Zahn) has a soft spot for Calvin, and can't bring himself to cut him from the team despite the constant urgings of his assistant Coach Dewey (Abraham Benrubi).

First there was the book, then the Facebook widget, and now the Viral Loop iPhone app, which went officially live today. It just goes to show that marketing a book ain't what it used to be.
While the Facebook application tells you what you're worth in dollars to Facebook based on your level of engagement, your friends' activity level and your "influence"--defined, in part, by how well you spread the app--the Viral Loop iPhone app is a predictions market--the first to earn its own iPhone app. Simply put, users who download the Viral Loop Predictions Market from Apple's app store or iTunes get $10,000 in play money to bet on the future. (If a user runs out of money, there are ways to raise more capital, like, well, buying the book.)
Along with StudioE9, which created both applications, I partnered with InTrade to handle the back end. Initially I'd planned to handle things--creating the predictions, »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.
Joy Ride - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2001
Joy Ride passes one of the tests of a good thriller, which is that when the characters approach a closed room or mysterious package or, in this case, a car trunk within which a surprise is waiting, it's not easy to predict what the surprise will be. In this case, college student Lewis (Paul Walker), his ne'er-do-well brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski), a girl Lewis is sweet on, have been directed by a psychopath who's been stalking them to pull over and open the trunk of their car. What's inside won't be revealed here, but it's a nice twist that's both logical and provides a quiet little chill.
Both of those qualities inform the whole of Joy Ride, »

Monsters vs. Aliens
Monsters, aliens, superheroes -- it's the sort of fare that's perfect for animation. For the most part, critics and fans seem to agree, although our Scott Weinberg says the film "is Not one of those transcendent animated features, the sort that bridges the gap between kid stuff and grown-up art with no discernible effort whatsoever. Great movies sometimes do not hit it off with the audience upon first viewing. Not even the sublime Citizen Kane found much appreciation on its release in 1941, taking over twenty years and critical re-discovery in order for everybody to agree it was a pretty special movie.
Cult films are different (and this is not a list of cult movies) – those do tend to find an audience (usually people who become hardcore fans) allowing the film to become celebrated in alternative ways – as opposed to garnering a multitude of awards.
This is a list drawn up of films I consider under-rated; overlooked; not thought about; dismissed, and so forth. I am not suggesting they should be regaled as masterpieces anointed and placed in a cinematic pantheon of greatness.
Compiling lists is very tough and as this is limited to a mere ten films, some wonderful films did not make final cut. »

Chicago – Christine Jeffs’ “Sunshine Cleaning” has its ups and downs, its pros and cons, but it’s worth a look, now on Blu-Ray and DVD, for one of the most delightful, multi-faceted performances of the year from one of the better actresses of her generation. What Amy Adams delivers in “Sunshine Cleaning” is her most interesting turn since “Junebug”. Even with an average Blu-Ray release, Adams makes “Cleaning” worth at least a rental on its own.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0 Despite what Adams (and, to a lesser extent, Emily Blunt) bring to “Sunshine Cleaning,” it’s pretty undeniable that the screenplay could have used another polish. The film fluctuates wildly in tone and overall quality and feels at times like it was practically created by a computer designed to make a “Sundance comedy”.
The “Sundance comedy” is practically a genre of its own at this point - odd characters, quirky dialogue, an unexpected plot twist, »

Julia Roberts and Clive Owen in a smart, fast-paced espionage thriller should have gone gangbusters at the box office, but for some reason never caught fire. They play dueling corporate spies, and that's all you really need to know to enjoy it. Duplicity is witty and engaging, and I think it should hold up quite well to multiple viewings. Also on Blu-ray. Buy it.
Greg Mottola's nostalgic paen to youth is more wistful and bittersweet than rambunctious and celebratory, which makes for a darker viewing experience. It's shot through with a sub-current of anger and resentment, occasionally flaring up to reveal unflattering embarrassments most of us would rather forget. With Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, and Ryan Reynolds at his most sleazily appealing. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

Most times, we read our comics and watch our movies and television programs and come in at the beginning or during an act of gruesome violence. Often, we then see the crime scene investigators do their thing and then leave. But what becomes of the crime scene afterwards?
Answering that question is the moving Sunshine Cleaning, an independent film starring Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. The well-received film comes out on DVD this Tuesday from Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Adams plays Rose Lorkowski, a single parent stuck in a dead end job, trying to raise her young son. Raised by her failed salesman father (Alan Arkin), it fell to Rose to raise her younger sister Norah. Rose was once on top of the world, captain of the cheerleading team, but there she is, a decade-plus later and she’s still sleeping with the quarterback (Steve Zahn), despite his being married to someone else. »
