Boos! & Whoop-doos!: 12 Months of Toilet Plunkers and Dumpster Diamonds!

23 December 2009 9:55 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The End of 2009? Whoop-doo! This year has been one hellatious shit storm from the get-go. Pregnant ladies and babies, The Great Depression Part II, pig flu, more than a handful of horrible shootings, a balloon boy, Tiger's indiscretions, and our first black president. Not to mention more dead celebrities than I can shake a stick at. Every time I turned around, some other atrocious calamity was happening right before my eyes. Making 2009 one of the most interesting years of this entire decade. According to Michael Ruppert in his film Collapse its only going to get worse before it gets better. Yes, the Teens are going to see more than half of your friends and family dead. Take account of the folks around you. By the time 2020 rears its ugly head, most of these people will be gone. Turned to dust and painful memories. My advice to you this coming New Year? »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

16 December 2009 3:18 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

All Jonathan wants for Festivus

11 December 2009 3:09 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Festivus is upon us once again here at TV Squad and regardless of whether or not I've been naughty or nice, all my wishes had better come true because I've already sat through all ten crappy episodes of FlashForward -- I deserve all this.

First off, as you can probably tell by the picture above, I've got high hopes for David Simon's upcoming HBO drama Treme. Set in a post-Katrina New Orleans, I am in no way asking for this show to be The Wire meets the bayou, but I do want it to be good. Judging by the cast (Wire alums Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters, Steve Zahn, and Khandi Alexander to name a few), I'd say Simon already has another hit on his hands.

Meet the Cast of Diary of a Wimpy Kid

4 December 2009 5:22 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Getting its start as a popular Web comic, Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series has sold millions of copies and turned just as many little boys into readers. Dads dig them. Little girls have even been known to read them.

Now the hard part: making a movie that meets the fans' sky-high expectations. Information about the movie has been scarce, and only a few pics from the set have turned up. At least we know who's been cast.

Who's playing the wise-cracking hero in the live-action movie? And, more important, what do we think of the casting? Find out in Meet the Cast of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Next Showing: Diary of a Wimpy Kid is set for an April 2, 2010 release

Review: Did you ever see… Out of Sight?

3 December 2009 12:38 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the release of Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air. Starring George Clooney, it tells the story of a frequent flyer executive who is unexpectedly grounded. The jump from TV to film is never easy, even for those well suited to the movie business. Clooney had a couple of false starts, but that was down to quality of scripts more than it was a reflection on the ER star’s performance.

He began with a great turn in From Dusk ’til Dawn, then had to grin and bare it through One Fine Day and The Peacemaker (and don’t get me started on Batman and Robin). That’s when the perfect role came along, one that would set his career on an upward flight, and introduce him to a man who would have great influence on his Hollywood career. The man was director Steven Soderbergh, the movie was Out of Sight. »

This is the one Shakespeare wrote a play about and the one who Mel Gibson implied to be the bastard son of Braveheart William Wallace, thereby giving the finger to history unless Wallace's sperm could survive years past his death. That Gibson's sperm could magically endure beyond the grave is far more likely. Aff Review: Calvin Marshall

4 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

At first glance, writer/director Gary Lundgren's Calvin Marshall could be mistaken for just another "baseball movie," but this poignant and humorous film delivers much more. Baseball is the focus of the main character, yet the heart of this film, which had its world premiere at Austin Film Festival, is more about passion and human nature.

Title character Calvin (Alex Frost) lives and breathes baseball, getting up before dawn to practice -- unfortunately it's a lost cause, as he just doesn't have the skills for the local junior college baseball team. Despite his gruff exterior, the team's head coach (Steve Zahn) has a soft spot for Calvin, and can't bring himself to cut him from the team despite the constant urgings of his assistant Coach Dewey (Abraham Benrubi).

Calvin loves baseball probably more than most major league players – and definitely more than the rest of the Bayford Bisons. Calvin trains constantly – also more than the rest of the Bayford Bisons. The Bayford Bisons’ coach – Coach Little (Steve Zahn) – appreciates Calvin’s love for the game and his tenacity, but Calvin’s biggest hurdle in succeeding at baseball is that he is not a good player. Enter Tori Jensen (Michelle Lombardo), the gorgeous new student who also happens to be the star volleyball player. Jenson is a major league player who is slumming it in junior college in order to be close with her ailing mother. »

Viral Loop iPhone App Predictions Game

19 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

First there was the book, then the Facebook widget, and now the Viral Loop iPhone app, which went officially live today. It just goes to show that marketing a book ain't what it used to be.

While the Facebook application tells you what you're worth in dollars to Facebook based on your level of engagement, your friends' activity level and your "influence"--defined, in part, by how well you spread the app--the Viral Loop iPhone app is a predictions market--the first to earn its own iPhone app. Simply put, users who download the Viral Loop Predictions Market from Apple's app store or iTunes get $10,000 in play money to bet on the future. (If a user runs out of money, there are ways to raise more capital, like, well, buying the book.)

Along with StudioE9, which created both applications, I partnered with InTrade to handle the back end. Initially I'd planned to handle things--creating the predictions, »

Fall Frights: Joy Ride (Film Review)

4 October 2009 3:25 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Joy Ride - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2001

Joy Ride passes one of the tests of a good thriller, which is that when the characters approach a closed room or mysterious package or, in this case, a car trunk within which a surprise is waiting, it's not easy to predict what the surprise will be. In this case, college student Lewis (Paul Walker), his ne'er-do-well brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski), a girl Lewis is sweet on, have been directed by a psychopath who's been stalking them to pull over and open the trunk of their car. What's inside won't be revealed here, but it's a nice twist that's both logical and provides a quiet little chill.

Both of those qualities inform the whole of Joy Ride, »

Monsters vs. Aliens

Monsters, aliens, superheroes -- it's the sort of fare that's perfect for animation. For the most part, critics and fans seem to agree, although our Scott Weinberg says the film "is Not one of those transcendent animated features, the sort that bridges the gap between kid stuff and grown-up art with no discernible effort whatsoever. No, Monsters vs. Aliens is a loud, rushed, choppy, silly, colorful Nintendo game of a movie. »
