The Greatest Story Ever Told: it suffers in the retelling

22 hours ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

With such inherently dramatic source material, George Stevens's cameo-packed 1965 dramatisation of the life of Jesus Christ still manages to be long, plodding and unintentionally funny

Director: George Stevens

Entertainment grade: E

History grade: C

Jesus of Nazareth is believed by Christians to have been the son of God.

Violence

The film begins in the reign of Herod the Great, who died in 4Bc. (This is the reason that many historians date the birth of Jesus to between 11 and four years before himself.) Told by three magi that a new king has been born in Bethlehem, Herod orders a massacre of local children. This massacre appears only in Matthew's gospel and is not mentioned in any non-biblical sources, such as Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews, which details Herod's murderous record at some length. John's gospel implies that Jesus was born in Nazareth, not Bethlehem. This doesn't put the film off. »

First Posters From Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood

23 December 2009 12:20 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

For your viewing pleasure, Collider presents some pictures of Russell Crowe looking pissed off. The good news is, they weren’t taken at the Mercer Hotel and a blood-caked telephone is nowhere to be seen. Rather, they’re international posters for director Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated Robin Hood. They feature Crowe (apparently fresh off a screening of Zombieland) in close-up, pointing a ready-to-fire bow and arrow menacingly right at your face.

The message here seems to be in line with that of the original North American trailer: Robin Hood is a badass and this summer you should come watch him do lots of badass stuff. In many ways, it’s reminiscent of the campaign that launched Zack Snyder’s 300. I know some people have taken issue with this, but I’m really not concerned. With a name like Ridley Scott attached, you know you’re in store for a »

New International Trailer for Ridley Scott’s ‘Robin Hood’

22 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

We just discussed the recently released trailer for Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, and a host of other excellent actors, But, now Yahoo has the exclusive trailer for the international audience; and it shows far more Robin Hood-like action, and even the prerequisite shot of the camera being the arrow flying through the trees at a target.

Instead of a pounding “metal” tune backing up the images in the last trailer, this time it seems that the music for this trailer is from The Dark Knight, backed up with some added violins; and then some much more decidedly British-isle sounding music.

We also get a good smattering of dialogue, including the soon to be classic, “Are you ready to be, who you are?” There are glimpses of Marian in action, the Sheriff (Matthew MacFayden) yelling at someone, and the still engaging Max von Sydow giving his best Commissioner Gordon speech, »

Martin Scorsese’s period crime/mystery/suspense film gets a final poster via Chud. I guess the studio couldn’t be bothered to spend money on, you know, an actual new poster. Eh. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Patricia Clarkson, Elias Koteas, and Ted Levine. »

International Robin Hood Trailer

21 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The first teaser trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood appeared online last week, giving us our first proper taste of the Alien director’s take on the classic character, as well as Russell Crowe’s portrayal of him. I have to say I agree with fellow Screen Rant writer Paul Young that the trailer was a little disappointing, mostly because the heavy, beating rock music overpowered everything. It wasn’t bad or anything, as what was happening on-screen looked good to me, but just the wrong choice of music Imo.

Now we have a new international trailer for Robin Hood that comes in and saves the day by remedying the problems I had with the first (domestic) teaser. It does this by replacing the heavy beating rock music (which was reminiscent of the second Clash of the Titans trailer) to some which is far more suited to the movie, »

New International Robin Hood Trailer

21 December 2009 9:22 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you’re the kind of person that needs dialogue in a movie trailer, the new international Robin Hood trailer is for you.  Because unlike the first trailer (from last week) which featured almost no dialogue and a lot of music, this new one is a more straight forward selling of the movie.

While the story of Robin Hood has been told a million times in movies and on TV, I’ll admit to being very excited about this new version.  After all, with Ridley Scott directing and a cast featuring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Mark Strong, Danny Huston, and Max von Sydow, how can you not be?  Also, as a huge fan of Gladiator, I’m extremely excited to see Crowe and Scott team up again on an action film.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Robin Hood gets released May 14, 2010.

Review: Shutter Island

21 December 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We've come to expect Martin Scorsese to swing for the fences every single time he's at bat, so when a movie comes along like Shutter Island, a pulpy, by-the-numbers thriller, it's easy to feel a slight twinge of disappointment. Here, we're dealing with a lesser work by a modern master, which is to say that Shutter Island is still a crackerjack mystery, executed with great artistic care, but it's also Scorsese working about as close as he ever has to popcorn-munching cineplex fare. It's a hard-boiled and unpretentious outing, but the individual parts of Shutter Island are greater than the whole -- particularly the cinematography by Robert Richardson and outstanding work from a dream team ensemble cast.

Leading that dream team is Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels, called in to a state-run mental institution on a storm-battered, rocky island on the East Coast, along with his new »
