#5 - The Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy
Blaring brass, sawing strings, playful woodwinds, bombastic percussion, ghostly choirs... It's the latest release from EastWest! Uh... or a cue from the Jerry Bruckheimer/Disney franchise The Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Okay, look. We know this one is going to start a flame war... but before you comment on why this score is the end to all that's right and holy in our industry, just remember... You Voted For These!
The Pirates Of The Caribbean started out being something that Hans Zimmer never thought would amount to much (Tpotc: The Curse of the Black Pearl; 2003), and ended up being probably one of the definitive works of his career (Tpotc: At World's End; 2007). Originally handed off to protege Klaus Badelt to handle (with Zimmer "producing" as an overseer... Lead balloon, much?), Tpotc might be solely responsible for the deluge of »

The Bible, Deuteronomy, tells us to be ware of "an en chanter, or a witch, or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits or a wizard." The Book of Isaiah tells us to steer clear of "familiar spirits and wizards that peep and mutter."
So, about J.K. Rowling and her Hogwarts. Forget the books. Harry Potter's gaining on the title of highest-grossing film franchise ever, six films so far grossing something like $5 bil.
So, anybody actually believe this witchcraft stuff?
Yeah.

Alien Trespass, a retro-ish science fiction comedy starring Robert Patrick, Eric McCormack and Sarah Smyth, has gotten an original score by Louis Febre. His previous credits include Swimfan, Control and Devil's Pond, and he won an Emmy together with John Debney for The Cape in 1996. Alien Trespass takes place in the 1950s and revolves around a crash-landing alien spaceship and the monster that escapes from it. R.W. Goodwin, who has produced and directed a number of X-Files episodes, helms the film which had its festival premiere recently at the Palm Springs Festival. Febre's score is, just like the film itself, flirting with 1950s sci-fi B-movies and thus features the early electronic instrument, the Theremin. »

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film, »
