Grey 'thought movie message was a trick'

23 November 2009 3:18 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Sasha Grey has said that she initially thought she was being tricked when she was approached to star in Steven Soderbergh's new movie The Girlfriend Experience. The porn star told The Daily Telegraph that she was first contacted by Soderbergh's screenwriters David Levien and Brian Koppelman about the role via her MySpace page. Grey said: "I thought it was a trick. Then I came home one day (more) »

First ‘Date Night Trailer Released

13 November 2009 4:10 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Those looking to get a glimpse at next year’s NBC Thursday primetime lineup-inspired hybrid film are in luck as 20th Century Fox has release the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey romantic, action, comedy film Date Night.

This marks the first film by director Shawn Levy since his box office hits Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian raked in over $1 Billion. Not only does Levy have a new film, but also a script written by the talented Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) with revisions by Josh Klausner (Shrek The Third), Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Aline Bros McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). (You may remember the names Simon Kinberg and Aline Brosh McKenna as they are the writing team to sell a $2 million film pitch to Paramount with J.J. Abrams.)

First Look: Steve Carell & Tina Fey’s Date Night

1 October 2009 4:56 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Just looking at the first photograph from the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey comedy, Date Night, makes me smile. Carell and Fey, the king and queen of NBC’s Thursday night comedy line-up, are both known for making even the most ridiculous of characters sympathetic and human (Fey’s Sarah Palin being the best example).  They’ve earned so much comedic credit along the way and they look cute together. Knowing that, I want to say this is sure to be the funniest movie of 2010.

Even better, they’re supported by a cast of standouts from both the comedy and dramatic world: Kristin Wiig, James Franco, Ray Liotta, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg.

So then why aren’t I more enthused?

The story sounds solid enough; Carell and Fey play characters who have achieved the American dream: happily married with nice kids, a nice house, and a nice life. »

First Photo from Date Night Starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey

1 October 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

If I had to guess, I'd say there's a very good chance that Shawn Levy's upcoming comedy Date Night will be a big hit. Not only does it bring together the stars of two of the biggest sitcoms on TV right now (The Office and 30 Rock), but it also has a supporting cast that includes James Franco, Mila Kunis, Mark Wahlberg, Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, Ray Liotta and yes, even G4's Olivia Munn. Not to mention the fact that Shawn Levy has directed two of the highest grossing comedies of the past 3 years with Night At The Museum and its sequel. But will it actually be good? The script for Date Night, which was originally written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean's Thirteen, Knockaround Guys, Rounders), got an honourable mention from the 2008 Hollywood BBC Elite List as one of the best screenplays of the year. However, since »

A Single trailer

14 September 2009 7:12 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Indie drama A Single Man shouldn't be confused with the Coens' A Serious Man or Brian Koppelman's Solitary Man. That being said, F*Ck Me that trailer is awesome! Easily on my top five for trailers this year, along with The Men Who Stare At Goats and the original teaser for 500 Days Of Summer. Every Hollywood convention for marketing has been avoided; no money shot, no killer quote (no quote At All), no epic score and no spoiling of the entire film's plots and twists. The film from »

Niki Caro Melts for Groundswell Prods' Buttercup

6 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- We'd have a problem type-casting Niki Caro as a genre, or subject specific director. She commenced her career with the delightful, child's fantasy with a moral at the end of the story locally set New Zealand pic (Whale Rider), followed with the women's rights in the workplace (North Country) and will preem a period piece at the Toronto Film Festival next month with the long awaited The Vintner's Luck. Now according to THR, Caro's new directing gig is a mid-life crisis, contempo dramedy from the Pov of a male character called Buttercup. Part of the 2007 Blacklist of Best Unproduced Screenplays, it surfaced at the bottom tier of the list - which means absolutely nothing about the scripts' quality, this is written by first time scribe Alice O'Neil and will be produced by Michael London's Groundswell Prods. who have the upcoming The Informant! and All Good Things as their next projects slated for release. »

Caro Moves from 'Vintner's Luck' to 'Buttercup'

6 August 2009 2:38 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I know very few people are going to click on this headline, but I think reporting on the work of Niki Caro is important since female directors are expected to have a great 2009 with the likes of Kathryn Bigelow already hitting it big with The Hurt Locker and Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Lone Scherfig, Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers all making a splash later this year as well as the upcoming directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (I apologize if I am missing anyone). While the debut trailer for Caro's The Vintner's Luck certainly underwhelmed prior to its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September I still believe Whale Rider carries weight and North Country was a solid effort even if it wasn't a box-office or critical runaway. That said, next up for Caro is Buttercup reports The Hollywood Reporter with a script from Alice O'Neil. The »

The film follows a middle-age man who has messed up in life but tries to get himself together when his wife passes away. The script was written by Alice O'Neil.

"Alice writes with such a light touch, which is what makes you want to take a journey with the characters," states producer Brian Koppelman.

Toronto Film Festival Announces 2009 Galas and Special Presentations

14 July 2009 10:37 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The first wave of major titles for this year's Toronto International Film Festival [1] were announced yesterday, and there were certainly more than enough high profile picks to get people talking. Ricky Gervais's The Invention of Lying, Neil Jordan's Ondine and Nicolas Winding Refn's Valhalla Rising were among the world premieres unveiled for September, along with North American premieres of such films as Steven Soderbergh's The Informant!, Bong Joon-ho's Mother and Johnnie To's Vengeance. There was some controversy over the choice of Jon Amiel's Darwin biopic Creation as the festival opener -- not because of the subject matter, but rather because of the fact that this is the first time the fest will kick off with a non-Canadian film. It does seem like a bit of a strange choice, but how can you say no to Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly? Sundance hit Precious, Based »

I Am Legend duo might float again on City That Sailed

9 July 2009 11:31 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

In addition to developing their prequel to I Am Legend, director Francis Lawrence and star Will Smith are also working on a second possible collaboration, a family drama with a fantastic element called City That Sailed.

According to Variety, the project would see Smith play a father that lives in England while his young daughter resides in Manhattan. The father-daughter connection and desire to see one another is so great that it causes the island to actually detach from its foundation and sail across the Atlantic so the two could be reunited. I guess the love of the Smiths is stronger than the families who make the commute from New Jersey to Manhattan and who would now be separated from their loved ones.

Will Smith is a Manhattan Magnet

9 July 2009 10:22 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Will Smith is potentially teaming up with his I Am Legend director Francis in the upcoming film City That Sailed per Variety. Though no deal is done, the film is being developed with Smith in mind and he is already on board as a producer. City That Sailed is a literal translation of its name in which a father and daughter separated by an ocean miss each other so much that Manhattan literally breaks off and beings sailing across the Atlantic. Truman Show screenwriter Andrew Niccol penned a script which Brian Koppelman and David Levien of Ocean's Thirteen fame will soon rewrite. Twentieth Century Fox, no stranger to releasing films with city-scale special effects, will distribute. Lawrence should look no further than the effects crew responsible for breaking continental shelves in Roland Emmerich's 2012 trailer when it comes time to snap off Manhattan. I can't wait to see that sequence on the big screen. »

Will Smith and Francis Lawrence May Reteam For Family Fantasy; I Am Legend Prequel Dead?

9 July 2009 7:26 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Will Smith could re-team with his I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence, but not for the film you're probably expecting to hear about. Lawrence is developing a script called The City That Sailed as a vehicle for Smith. Originally written by Andrew Niccol, the script has kind of a neat, Miyazaki-ish logline: "a father and daughter living on opposite sides of the ocean whose love is so strong that it causes Manhattan to split off and float across the Atlantic." According to Variety, Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Rounders, Oceans Thirteen) will rewrite as the project goes forward. THR has a few more details of the script, which Fox picked up in 2006. Smith would be "a New York City street magician whose daughter, because of family circumstances, lives in England. In exploring a lighthouse one day, the girl discovers a room with magic candles and wishes to be reunited with »

Will Smith Uses Will Power To Move The ‘City That Sailed’

9 July 2009 7:13 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Some people have a strong dislike for Will Smith due to the perceived ego of both his characters and the actor himself.  Expect that trend to continue with Smith's latest project where he plays a man capable of moving entire islands through sheer desire. Per Variety, Smith will be starring in City That Sailed.  The plot is described as being about "a father who lives on the opposite side of the ocean from his daughter. Their bond is so strong that it causes Manhattan to split off and float across the Atlantic." That's pretty stupid. There are two rays of light here though that keep this project interesting and potentially worthwhile.  The first (and the one many of you may not agree is a positive thing), Smith is developing the film with his I Am Legend helmer, Francis Lawrence.  Love it or hate it, Lawrence brought a strong visual sense to that movie that would benefit a »
