DVD Playhouse—November 2009

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

It was no surprise that Marcus Nispel's Friday The 13th was a disaster. After all, it was a) a remake, b) a mainstream horror film and c) produced by Michael Bay. Despite only making $65 million domestically and plummeting more than 80% in its second week, a sequel is already slated for an August release next year. To quote Kevin Smith, "In Hollywood, you just kind of fail upwards." The sequel will be the 13th film featuring the character, but if the most recent reports can be trusted, the hockey-mask wearing serial killer might be getting put down for good. Spoilers! Pajiba has reported that sequel writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift have been tasked with ending Jason Voorhees' reign of terror once and for all by killing him off and ending the franchise for good. No more slaughters at Camp Crystal Lake, no more trips down to hell, no more »

Stan Lee may be done with his "Iron Man 2" cameo, but "Thor" still awaits. He tweeted about his high expectations last night, including what it will take to get him to Asgard.
Meanwhile at the Marvel offices in New York, editor Axel Alonso posted a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect to see in a bathroom there. After the jump, there's also Dennis Calero's design obervation about James Cameron's "Avatar," Edgar Wright's early memories of "Labyrinth" and Tony Harris on wrapping up "Ex Machina."
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 12, 2009.
@smilinstanlee Since many have asked, my Iron Man cameo is done and I'm waiting to do Thor. But I'n not goin' to Asgard unless they fly me first class!

Kevin Smith is coming to Blu-ray in a big way on November 17 with the debut of Chasing Amy and Clerks bundled with previously released Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back in The Kevin Smith Collection.
I currently have three of these loaded sets up for grabs in this contest. Send in the completed entry form below to throw your name into the hat. You can also return any or every day and enter again for as long as the contest is active.
Clerks is one wild day in the life of a pair of overworked counter jockeys whose razor-sharp wit and on-the-job antics give a whole new meaning to customer service. Chasing Amy: Filled with Smith's unique ear for dialogue and insight into relationships, Chasing Amy offers a thoughtful, funny look at how perceptions alter lives, and how obsession and self-doubt skew reality. From Splash Page: It's no secret that many creators in and around the comics scene have embraced Twitter these days—and many of them make regular appearances in our daily Twitter Report. Perhaps one of the most surprising creators with a regular presence in the Twitterverse, however, is one of the industry's most beloved icons: Stan Lee.
The co-creator of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Hulk, the X-Men and countless other popular characters, the 86-year-old Lee has taken to Twitter with surprising ease. A typical 24 hours with @SmilinStanLee offers readers a host of witty observations, tongue-in-cheek commentary and self-deprecating humor that reveals why Stan "The Man" Lee is one of comics' living legends.
I spoke with Lee about his arrival on the Twitter scene, why he's taken to the microblogging tool so easily, and why communicating with fans on Twitter actually has him feeling like he's gone back in time.

Yesterday, Variety published the list of films that have made the cut of 20 for the race to get the Best Animated Feature Oscar. These 20 films will eventually be cut down to a list of 5 nominees, rather than the usual 3, and ultimately cut down to the one film that will be named Best Animated Film by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. A few of these animated films are yet to be released, and have not yet been screened by the Academy, so it's possible that some may be disqualified because of too much live-action mixed in, quality, etc. The final five nominees will not be announced until February 2, with the Oscars being presented on March 7. For your viewing pleasure (and our own need to inject our opinion into this process), we would like to present the following list with comments: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Instantly eliminated due to too much live-action and likelihood of »

Part of MovieSet’s Remembering John Hughes special series
By Kl Hedberg
for MovieSet.com
Filming began in 2006. On August 6th of this year, my generation and those that have followed, lost a legendary storyteller. John Hughes sudden death at 59 was like losing a family member for many of us who saw his films as a mirror of our teenage years. I grew up in Evanston, Illinois, the setting for many Hughes films. I can remember fellow classmates trying to be extras when he posted open calls for his films. The excitement of Hollywood coming to the Midwest was more than we could bear. When the films were then released in theatres, we would try to spot our friends or classmates in the scenes. There really wasn’t a need to seek anyone out in particular as each character was our classmate or friend. We saw ourselves in each cast member. »

"Glee" star Chris Colfer tells "Extra" he's enjoyed covering Top 40 artists like Beyoncé as a member of the high school choir on the hit Fox show, but you shouldn't expect to hear any Garth Brooks or Carrie Underwood tunes performed on the show.
"I couldn't do country, with all due respect to all country music artists," says Colfer, who plays Kurt.

Confession: I haven't been watching AMC's award-winning television series "Mad Men"—despite the insistence of Kevin Smith. While I admit that this needs to be rectified, I have watched the "X-Men" movies, so I can appreciate at least half the brilliance of the mash-up of "Mad Men" and "X-Men" over on MadAtoms.
Created by writer Geoffrey Golden and artist Jordan Monsell, the mash-up imagines the "Mad Men" cast as played by Marvel's favorite mutants. In one example, Wolverine is matched up with Don Draper (as played by Jon Hamm in the series): "Mysterious pasts, been with a lot of girls and will take off whenever they feel like it. They're also the best at what they do. You got a problem with that, bub?"
Along with the first four-part mash-up, the duo posted a follow-up featuring "Mad Men" roles for Kitty Pryde, Angel. Rogue and Beast.

After last week's jam-packed release schedule led by "G.I. Joe," we're given an opportunity to breath today with only two new theatrical titles coming to market, along with an assortment of action-filled catalog offerings making their way to Blu-ray. This is your DVD Report for Tuesday, November 9.
Disney's Pixar was flying high after the critically and commercially acclaimed "Wall-e," so naturally they looked to the skies for their next animated outing, "Up." The film focuses on Carl Fredricksen, an elderly shut-in who aims to pay homage to his late wife by relocating to the top of a South American paradise the couple had always dreamed of visiting. Equipping his home with hundreds of helium balloons, the house lifts off its foundation and floats away, inadvertently taking with it a young wilderness scout who grows attached to the grumpy septuagenarian at the start of a grand adventure.

Paramount Pictures wants to reward all of the internet moviegoers which helped make Paranormal Activity a viral phenomenon. Sure, some might argue that the marketing campaign was a very calculated attempt to make it feel like the audience "made the success" of the movie, and those people might not be wrong (but who cares? really...). Paramount is now taking that marketing concept to the release of the Blu-ray/Dv, by putting Your Name in the credits of the home video release. Head on over to the ParanormalActivityProject.com and fill in your name, email, and birthdate and you will be featured in the DVD credits. How cool is that? This isn't the first time this has happened. Peter Jackson held a simuler stunt with the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings series, allowing fan club members to have their names in the DVD credits. And Kevin Smith famously »

Earlier this week, Dr. Cole Abaius and I were having a discussion about a new brand of director -- the super-accessible kind who are now connecting with us, and their audience through the social media site Twitter. Whereas they were previously just the folks behind the camera and in the hot seat during junket weekend prior to their release, directors like Up in the Air's Jason Reitman (@JasonReitman), The Brothers Bloom director Rian Johnson (@rcjohnso) and even that Clerks guy Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith) are now just a tweet away. It is interesting to see them so connected, so close to the folks who buy tickets that pay their salaries. Then, there are the on-set tweeters. The publicist for The Expendables has been tweeting like crazy about Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and everyone else who's come to that set. And Overture Films has someone on set with Breck Eisner's The Crazies (@TheCraziesFilm), tweeting live from the »

Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.
Jon Favreau, it seems, didn't have time to commemorate anything last night, as he was hard at work editing "Iron Man 2." If he was following Joe Quesada or Matt Fraction, however, he probably kept up on the game's details just fine. Scope out all of those posts below, along with a new Jim Lee page and Geoff Johns' mystery project that he wants to work with Greg Rucka on.
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 5, 2009.

To continue my review of my epic journey to watch all my films from A-z, this is the Third part.
For those that don’t know I am watching all 700+ Dvd/Bluray films from A-z which has so far taken me 2+ years to get to the end of G’s!
I thought I should retrospectively review each letter and give my top 5 films from each alpha block and maybe bring your attention to some films you may not have seen, films you’ve not seen in ages or films you should give another try.
Another letter and another bunch of classics I should own and a selection of ones I’m glad to say I don’t own.
A few to mention are Catwoman, Cannonball Run, Cape Fear, Clash of the titans, Cool running’s, City lights, Chinatown, City of God, Cheerleader Ninjas, Cool as Ice, City on Fire and Casablanca. »

This has been coming for some time, and after recent shakeups at Disney, is really no great surprise. Now Daniel Battsek, the current president of Miramax, has announced that he'll step down at the end of January 2010. At the same time, Disney will relocate the label from New York City to Disney's headquarters in Burbank, CA, where they'll reduce Miramax's output to just three films a year. The label that launched Steven Soderbergh, Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith and was the biggest face of the '90s indie explosion is basically dead. Ok, the real end of the era hit four years ago, when the Weinstein brothers left Miramax, the company they built into an indie juggernaut. The years since then have been an extended coda for Miramax as it soldiered on at Disney. We've known for some time that Miramax would be cutting back, and that move was seen »

Austin Film Festival soared into the skies with the closing-might film Up in the Air, which included a rousing intro and Q&A by Jason Reitman. Yeah, there were other films, but I was in a mood for a major release that night. Plus, it was only a few blocks away from the closing night part at Annie's Cafe.
Before the film, Jette and I had a quick dinner at Parkside Cafe. She knows I wasn't exaggerating about how great the food was. Service was just as good this time, and the chef even came out to check on us. I don't know if that happens all the time, but maybe it was the fact I ordered the marrow. Whatever the case, he and his team make really good food.
Up in the Air is a solid, funny film, in the haha only serious kind of way. The aerial shots alone are worth it, »
