His grandfather, art director Walter H. Tyler, was nominated for the Academy Award 9 times and won the award in 1951 for Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949).

His score for Last Call (2002) (TV) was nominated for a 2002 Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition.

He was nominated for "Discovery of the Year" at the 2002 World Soundtrack Awards for his score for the movie, Frailty (2001).

Tyler's themes from "Children of Dune" (2003) have been used several times for different theatrical trailers.
