In a new featurette published by director F. Gary Gray on YouTube, composer Brian Tyler explains how he got into film music and gives some insight into the scoring process on his and Gray’s new film, Law Abiding Citizen. Among the things discussed are the piano-driven “motor” theme featured in the film, a result of the director wanting a theme that should go beyond genre expectations and have “a certain »

Thanks to an awesome trailer, I think it's safe to say that Law Abiding Citizen looks like it could be the surprise hit of the fall movie season. Veteran director F. Gary Gray looks to have delivered a riveting action thriller with a great cast and even better story. Much like Jon Favreau, Gray has a growing presence on Twitter, and that's where I found this great little featurette. F. Gary Gray himself shot a little video with composer Brian Tyler to answer a fan's question about how the scoring process works. He's also shot a few other videos about casting and will follow up this one with a look at the actual scoring session soon as well. An everyday guy (Gerard Butler) decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets his family's killers free. His target: The district attorney (Jamie Foxx) who orchestrated the »

The temporary score (a collection of pre-existing music utilized during the editing) is a controversial creative aid which was first utalized by the editors to keep some rhythm to their works. Today the job of producing and editing temporary track is a whole job onto itself. In the following article you'll hear a lot more about this job from two of Hollywood's top temp editors: Scott Stambler is a frequent collaborator of Rob Reiner and served as a temp editor on such features as Forrest Gump, The Kingdom and most recently on Tropic Thunder. Mark "Vordo" Wlodarkiewicz does a variety of music editing jobs which naturally includes temp editing: his most recent credits include Eragon, The Simpsons Movie and yes, he worked on Tropic Thunder as well.
First the bad news: many composers criticize the temp track as a way to stop creativity. True, many directors and producers ofter force »

As of right now, the latest trailer for Star Trek is my favorite to watch. One of the reasons I like it so much is because of its Impressive score. While I failed at discovering just where that music came from, composer Brian Tyler has popped up with the answer to that mystery and more.
Star Trek Music
ScoreNotes caught up with Brian Tyler to discuss quite a few projects including Star Trek. Since the interview was a recording, the good people at AICN have posted snippets from the transcript. It turns out that the music we heard in the film's trailer is a re-mixed track that Tyler created for the Children of Dune series. »

Have you ever wondered what some of your favorite film composers did / do / will do when they are not writing music? The following little snippet will give you a bit of idea into the "off-duty" work of Bernard Herrmann, Wendy Carlos and Brian Tyler.
Bernard Herrmann: Animal Activist?
To most, Bernard Herrmann is the composer of Psycho, North by Northwest and several other Hitchcock pictures. To some, he is a source of dozens of anecdotes about a colorful personality with serious mood swings. But only his most dedicated fans are aware of Herrmann's unorganized animal activist movements.
It's true: according to Steven C. Smith's A Heart at Fire's Center, Herrmann spent the last years in Hollywood taking care of its stray animal population. He would lure the little critters into his home with expensive food, have them neutered and then let them go on their way. Take that, Bob Barker! »

The heart that pounds away in our chests only does so a finite amount of time so we owe it to ourselves to milk the maximum amount out of every moment and explore as many avenues of interest possible. Why settle for a single profession, a solitary job, one in which we lock in and tread water for the rest of our lives? Every personality has many appendages and there is no crime in sating and expressing each and every one of them.
And, yeah, John Harrison is cool.
And while his name may or may not immediately mean something to you, rest assured, since he first got his left eardrum impaled upon a screwdriver in George A. Romero’s 1978 masterpiece Dawn Of The Dead, actor, writer, producer, director and composer John Harrison has spent his entire adult life pursuing his interests and perfecting his talents. Romero admirers most likely »

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:
1. Avatar (James Horner)
Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film, »
