Alex Kurtzman And Roberto Orci Nab A ‘License To Steal’

29 June 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The rascally writing/producing duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are at it again. Those dudes must be vampires or something; they certainly don’t sleep, not with the rate at which they drop joy bombs in TV and film. Before diving in with their new hotness, let’s rattle off a list: “ransformers: Revenge of the Fallen“; “The Proposal“; “Star Trek“; “Mission: Impossible III”; “The Island”; TV’s “Fringe” and “Alias.”

Yeah, they’re busy. That’s not even counting the dozen or so projects they have currently in various stages of development/production. And they’ve just added one more to the mix: “License to Steal,” an action-comedy loosely based on a Salon.com article. Kurtzman and Orci will produce for Paramount.

Variety reports that “Armageddon” and “Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem” writer Shane Salerno will deliver the script. The story will be loosely adapted from a pair of Marc Weingarten articles on Salon. »

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci Have 'License to Steal'

29 June 2009 12:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Oh, the obvious jokes you can make about Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci being involved with a project called License to Steal. Considering they penned both of Michael Bay's robot-gasm installments, and Star Trek, plus produced The Proposal, one could say that this was their Hollywood life story.

But it's not. According to Variety, License to Steal is actually based on Marc Weingarten's Salon.com article The Learjeat Repo Man, which examines world of repo men. Not just any repo men that come after your flatscreen or your Prius, but the "big game" hunter who steal / repossess private jets, yachts, helicopters, and whatever else it is rich, corrupt people own. For the dangers they face (and oh, do they face dangers) they receive a cut of the overall value.

The script is being penned by Shane Salerno, Kurtzman and Orci are its executive producers. The project was shopped »

Paramount Nabs Shane Salerno’s ‘Super Repo Men’ Script

29 June 2009 11:52 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

After the first Transformers reviews started coming in, some speculated that it would be a bad weekend for Paramount. But Revenge of the Fallen did amazing business, and now, according to THR, new Film Group president Adam Goodman has started to buy. First up is an untitled pitch by Shane Salerno, about "super repo men who reclaim high-end jets and boats from rich but delinquent (and often hostile) clientele." Salerno's action/comedy idea sounds like a pretty easy mark for a studio flush and ready to think about future tentpoles. Appropriately, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing, which isn't s surprise after this weekend's insane Transformers success. Look for this duo to have their hands in every big movie Paramount does for the next little while. "We're thrilled to be working with Shane, who's a wildly inventive and talented creator," they said in a statement that manages to say very little. »

Paramount's got a License to Steal

29 June 2009 11:39 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Paramount Pictures will make a make about what it's like repossessing expensive toys for rich boys. License to Steal is the title of the project in development, to be written by Shane Salerno (Alien vs. Predator - Requiem) and produced by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek).

The idea for the movie comes from a Salon.com article by Marc Weingarten. Salerno got in contact with Weingarten, got the unedited 8,000 word version of the story, wrote up an action-comedy proposal for a movie storyline and then shopped it around Hollywood. Paramount stepped up to the plate and paid a million dollars for the pitch and forthcoming screenplay.

"We're thrilled to be working with Shane, a wildly inventive and talented creator," Kurtzman and Orci said in a statement. "His passion was clear the minute he started telling his story. He has crafted a smart, lighthearted »

Kurtzman and Orci to Produce License to Steal

29 June 2009 11:23 AM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek and Transformers scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have signed on to produce License to Steal, an action-comedy set up at Paramount written by Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem). The project is loosely based on Marc Weingarten's Salon.com article about the high-end repo business, in which agents travel all over the world to reclaim play toys including private jets and speedboats. Though a portion of the article got published in two parts by Salon.com, Salerno actually acquired the article from Weingarten a year ago. Studios read an 8,000-word unpublished version, along with a pitch by Salerno, who is currently writing a project that James Cameron is producing at Fox. Paramount took acquired the project so quickly that other studios didn't have time to bid, but other studios and directors were interested. McG took the project to Warner Bros., Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) took it to Universal, »

Transformers Writers Have A License To Steal

28 June 2009 10:29 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Even though screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman seem sort of ambivalent about how it eventually turned out, the massive, over the top success of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen this past weekend is going to make it even easier for the already heavily in demand duo to pick and choose projects. In fact Variety says they.ve got a License to Steal. We hope you enjoyed our half-hearted world-play. The film.s name is License to Steal and they.re set to produce it for the Paramount Film Group. Kurtzman & Orci Have A Licence To Steal

28 June 2009 9:59 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Just like the movie’s director Michael Bay, and its producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman haven’t spent the last few days basking in the movie’s incredible success, or using their share of the profits to buy a small country. Instead, they’ve been lining up their next movie. And that movie is… drum-roll… Licence To Steal, a spec script by Shane Salerno that the duo picked up with the intention to produce. It’s the first project to be set up at Paramount under the studio’s new boss, Adam Goodman, but he didn’t get it for a steal – instead, the studio paid an undisclosed seven-figure sum for it. Wowsers. So, what did Paramount get for their great big sacks of cash? Well, they’re getting an action movie loosely based on a salon.com article by »

Paramount Has License to Steal

28 June 2009 6:36 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from Variety, Paramount Film Group's president Adam Goodman recently had the studio pony up seven figures for the action-comedy pitch License to Steal.

Screenwriter Shane Salerno will write the script.

The pitch is based on Marc Weingarten's Salon.com article that looks at the high-end repo business. Apparently, these repo men go all over the world to "reclaim play toys including private jets and speedboats."

Writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be producing License to Steal. This duo wrote Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with Ehren Kruger.

They also wrote Star Trek and they executive produced The Proposal

Paramount apparently nabbed this project before the other studios had time to take a crack at picking it up.

Initially, some of the article was published in two separate parts by Salon.com. Salerno initially picked up the article from Weingarten about a year ago. Studios were »

Shane Salerno's 'License to Steal' Pitch Lands at Paramount

Paramount, under its new leadership, paid seven figures upfront to acquire an action-comedy pitch called License to Steal (via Variety). The project is "loosely" based on a Salon.com article (read it here) about the high-end repossession business, in which agents travel all the world to reclaim "play toys" including private jets and speedboats. Shane Salerno (Armageddon, Shaft, Avp: Requiem) will write the screenplay. Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will be producing, but not writing, License to Steal. The two most recently produced the comedy The Proposal as well as Eagle Eye late last year. Sound interesting? "We're thrilled to be working with Shane, a wildly inventive and talented creator.
