Plot: In the distant future- a mercenary (Vin Diesel) is hired to transport a mysterious young woman (Melanie Thierry) from Russia to the U.S- while being pursued by a murderous religious cult. Review: Babylon A.D is a mess. I can't really say I'm surprised, as the film has been on the receiving end of some of the worst buzz to come along in a while. Heck- even the director, Mathieu Kassovitz, is telling people to stay away from it. In all fairness, the version of the film released in...

"Tropic Thunder" stands unchallenged at North American three-day weekend box office. For the third weekend in a row, the Ben Stiller's action comedy film stays at the #1 slot beating out its recent competitors, including "Babylon A.D.", "Traitor" and "Disaster Movie", by grossing an estimated $11.5 million.
Though experiencing a 29.3% deficit in sales this particular weekend, the DreamWorks Pictures' movie is the only film at the chart which breaks out the $10 million mark. On the success of "Thunder" in securing the first place for the third time, Media By Numbers' president Paul Dergarabedian commented, "For this movie to finish first three weeks in a row is really impressive. The great word-of-mouth helped, and people are obviously in the mood for comedy."
Telling the story of a band of actors who is stuck in a real war-like situation while filming a Vietnam war movie, "Thunder" has collected so far about $83.8 million nationwide.

Weekend of August 29 – 31, 2008
“Tropic Thunder” ruled the North American box office for the third consecutive weekend with $11.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Ben Stiller’s R-rated action comedy easily protected its No. 1 spot from this week’s four new releases, lifting its domestic total to $83.8 million. Released by DreamWorks, the film centers on a group of actors as they fight for survival in a dangerous jungle.
Debuting in second place with only $9.7 million was 20th Century Fox’s science-fiction adventure “Babylon A.D.,” which stars Vin Diesel as a mercenary who escorts a young woman (Mélanie Thierry) from Mongolia to New York City.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s summer hit “The Dark Knight” climbed back up to No. 3, earning $8.7 million and reaching a total gross of an impressive $502.4 million after seven weeks in release.

Want to see a follow-up to "The Dark Knight"? Better keep your batarangs crossed. Producer Charles Roven told The Hollywood Reporter a sequel isn't a sure thing. The franchise's future depends on director Chris Nolan. Warner Bros. made him an offer to do a third Bat picture, but Nolan, currently on vacation, hasn't committed to anything.
This further debunks the Cher-as-Catwoman rumor that floated last week. Ain't It Cool News, after checking with sources at Warner Bros., also said it was bat guano.

It's no secret that Hollywood is sequel crazy, but it's gotten to the point where it's hard to tell at a glance if a movie is a sequel or something new all together. Here are five trailers I had to closely scrutinize before I could determine whether or not sequalization was occurring.
Fast & Furious
Yup, this one's definitely a sequel, the fourth installment in the series launched by 2001's The Fast and the Furious. First off I give the whole franchise kudos for having the originality to give each of the films its own title and not just slapping on an escalating series of numbers. Furthermore, despite never having seen any of the others in the series, this trailer piqued my interest. Vin Diesel and co-star Michelle Rodriguez are seen here hijacking a tractor trailer hauling multiple tankers of gasoline, and the action is downright spectacular. Granted, the almost subliminal

The players: Director: Mathieu Kassovitz, Writers: Eric Besnard, Mathieu Kassovitz, Cast: Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry, Lambert Wilson, Gerard Depardieu
Facts of interest: Based on the novel by Maurice G. Dantec.
The plot: A mercenary (Diesel) agrees to escort a young woman from Mongolia to New York.
Our quick thoughts: When a director trashes his own movie just a few days before its theatrical release, you known it can’t be good. Earlier this week, French helmer Mathieu Kassovitz said he’s quite unhappy with his latest action flick “Babylon A.D.,” citing strong studio interference as one example of a terrible experience on the set.
Angry about not being able to do with the scenes what he originally intended to, Kassovitz even called the movie violent and stupid. And who can blame him for telling the truth?

Although Babylon A.D. was not screened for U.S. critics, it was for U.K. critics, who, as they might say, got their knickers in a twist over it. In a review that could only have been written for a British newspaper, James Christopher comments in the London Times, "It's utter codswallop, yet enjoyable if you unplug your brain." Xan Brooks of the Guardian uses the word "dunderheaded" to describe the film. Nigel Andrews, the critic for the Financial Times, calls it "tosh" (garbage). Horatia Harrod in the Telegraph says the movie's plot "is equal parts baffling, boring and absurd." Several critics lay the blame on Vin Diesel's performance. "Whatever happened to Vin Diesel's career?" asks Chris Tookey in the Mirror. The (unnamed) critic for the Sun answers, "The value of Diesel continues to plummet." And the (also unnamed) Belfast Telegraph critic writes, "Diesel has been running on unleaded."

As Babylon A.D., the futuristic film starring Vin Diesel, rolls out into theaters one has to wonder: Will this help give the actor with a once-promising movie career the comeback he deserves?
There was very little advertising for Babylon A.D. up until just a couple of weeks ago, but the real kicker is that last week the director himself slammed Fox Studios. Fox produced and is releasing the movie, and he says that executive meddling has ruined the film.
So I’m asking: If Babylon A.D. bombs, will it be the failure that flatlines Vin Diesel’s career for good?
Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Babylon A.D. currently has 28 reviews posted so far, with a rotten level of only 7% of them being positive. Ouch! Plus, director Mathieu Kassovitz (Gothika and the insane and insanely good La Haine) has been complaining about the way Fox (mis-) treated the film from day one.

Just going by the poster and the trailer, you could probably recognize Babylon A.D. as a bloated big-budget science fiction film. But after viewing the film, and with a few facts to put the film in context -- like the fact 20th Century Fox didn't screen Babylon A.D. for critics, like the fact director Mathieu Kassovitz has already disavowed the film, like the numb dumb clang of every line of dialogue in it -- you realize that Babylon A.D. is a bad, bloated big-budget science fiction film that doesn't even have the distinction of being memorably horrible or bravely idiotic or fascinatingly inept; it's simply an inert mass, a lump of product, a failure too expensive to simply discard.

Big, strong and tough, native New Yorker Vin Diesel has earned his stripes as a bona fide Hollywood action star with his ass-kicking roles in Pitch Black, The Fast And The Furious and XXX. Getting back to what he does best, the actor unites with Michelle Yeoh and Melanie Thierry, to star in French director Kassovitz.s forthcoming sci-fi epic thriller, Babylon A.D. digg_url =...

It will come as no surprise to Page Six readers that Vin Diesel's new flick, "Babylon A.D.," which opens today, is a colossal dud. We reported last year that the troubled sci-fi opus was so over budget and behind schedule that a completion-bond company had to step in to salvage it. There were huge ego clashes between Diesel and French director Mathieu Kassovitz. Diesel repeatedly showed up late, and production was shut down for two weeks when Kassovitz allegedly had a nervous breakdown, sources said. At the time,

"Babylon A.D." is making its way to the big screen this coming Friday, August 29, but before moviegoers head up to the theaters to check it out, a so-called official trailer to the Mathieu Kassovitz-directed/co-scripted action sci-fi has come out. Uniquely made, the video lampooned most of highlighted movies this summer from "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" to "Sex and the City" and "The Dark Knight".
Starring Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry and Gerard Depardieu, "Babylon" tells the story of Toorop, a mercenary with a simple code "kill or be killed". Living in the time when world has turned into a war zone, he is hired to escort a young woman holding a big secret and her guardian from Eastern Europe to New York. When he gradually finds out that the woman is carrying the only hope for the future of mankind and everyone

No really, it’s a serious question. How would you feel about Vin Diesel slipping into the role of a comic book villain? In a recent interview with MTV , Diesel said he would love to star in a comic book adaptation… as long as the flick centers on a bad guy.
Diesel doesn’t give us many details in the interview below, but he says he’s definitely looking out for an opportunity of this kind in the near future. Listen to what he has to say in the clip below and let us know what you think about it. Diesel as a Marvel baddie: yay or nay?

#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks in a Row 1. Disaster Movie This weekend is all about who sucks the least. Or rather who the general public perceives to suck least. Because We all know this is probably the lead contender for terribleness. The only other possibility for the top slot is Babylon Ad which they aren't advertising for. So what can I do? Estimate: $13.7 million 2. Babylon A.D. I should get it put in to my contract that I don't have to project anything under $10m. That would give me most of April and August off. Estimate: $11.5 million 3. Tropic Thunder I was really pleased to see this win another weekend. But the "victory" only means so much, don't kid yourself, this one is being considered a failure by the studio financially. Which means we've doomed ourselves to more juvenile comedies meant for the lowest common denominator. Yay us! Estimate: $10.6 million 4. The House Bunny
