The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

What Does Brittany Murphy's Death Mean For 'Sin City 2'?

21 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Could the death of Brittany Murphy this weekend have big implications for "Sin City 2"? While it might seem unlikely given the brief screen time of Murphy's character, Shellie, in the 2005 Robert Rodriguez film based on Frank Miller's gritty comic book series, her presence throughout many of Miller's "Sin City" tales is certainly hard to ignore.

Like many of the characters in Miller's "Sin City" stories, Shellie not only had a significant role in the story "The Big Fat Kill," but also appeared in two other narratives used in the film: "That Yellow Bastard" and "The Hard Goodbye." However, the character also appears in "A Dame To Kill For," the story which Rodriguez and various other sources have claimed will provide one of the major arcs in "Sin City 2."

In "A Dame To Kill For," Shellie plays a crucial role in setting up a brutal team-up between the »

Casting Call: Channing’s ‘Son of No One’ On the Hunt for a “Little Tatum”

No matter how long I do CTU, I still get giddy why I find surprise emails from people associated with Chan's films in my inbox. Today was no different when I was going through my email and found one that said "From Dito".

The only Dito I know is Dito Montiel (i.e. the director of Chan's past and future films 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints', 'Fighting', 'Brotherhood of the Rose', and 'Son of No One').

In the email, Dito told me about a casting call he's holding for Chan's next movie, 'Son of No One', which will start filming in New York City in March 2010.

The production will be holding an open call for boys and girls of any race. They are looking for boys to play 15 year old versions of Channing Tatum and Terrence Howard, and they're »

Iron Man 2 – Trailer

Iron Man 2 – Trailer

Directed by: Jon Favreau

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell

Rating: Nr

Release Date: May 7, 2010

Trailer Score: 8/10

My Thoughts: Robert Downey Jr. is Mr. Blockbuster. On Christmas Day he’ll have another huge film on his hands with Sherlock Holmes co-starring Jude Law. But we all know Iron Man put him on the map. No, not the acting map, he’d been there for years. I’ll talking household name status. And now it’s his second go round as the man in iron. What do I want? I want an enemy that isn’t simply and over-sized version of Iron Man. I also want Downey to continue to be drinking and sarcastic as Mr. Stark. As for Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard. Yeah, I guess I don’t care. Um, good lord, I forget Scarlet Johansson is »

Yes comic fans, it’s here – the first feature trailer for Iron Man 2!

Directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Iron Man 2 is the explosive follow up to last year’s runaway success, Iron Man. The trailer, which comes to us courtesy of Apple, features some fantastic footage. It’s got Iron Man, it’s got Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), it’s got the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and it’s got a fantastic peek at War Machine (Don Cheadle).

Put simply, this trailer adds to the promise of the sequel, which as you know we’ve been following pretty closely from the off-set. Be sure to pay attention to the opening few seconds also for some of that Stark trademark charm.

Iron Man 2 Trailer!

16 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Now this is just crazy! Iron Man 2 is not only the fourth Huge trailer we've seen today, but it is also another film that follows a formula I pointed out yesterday. How can a big release that already has three posters and now a trailer not have an official synopsis? I would think that to be the easiest thing of the three! But I digress, as the trailer - or, should I say, the last twenty seconds -- is awesome.

Iron Man 2 Trailer

So we have Justin Hammer, who's played by Sam Rockwell, and some returning cast including Robert Downey Jr and Gwyneth Paltrow. Don Cheadle is stepping in for Terrence Howard in the franchise, and it just so happens that his character gets to finally get some action this time around as War Machine. We know that Mickey Rourke is Whiplash, a villain from the comics; though »

Gwyneth Paltrow Flirts With Robert Downey Jr. in 'Iron Man 2' Trailer

16 December 2009 6:38 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

While "Iron Man 2" is generally an action movie, it will still offer sexual tension between its major characters. Through its first trailer, the movie exposes how Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts leaves Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark aka Iron Man yearning for more when Potts gives his helmet a smooch in answer to his request for a kiss.

The growing romance between the two is only a part of the trailer, though. The rest of the promo video displays more of the actions the movie has in store. Mickey Rourke's Whiplash cutting Stark's race car in half, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow knocking down men, and Don Cheadle's War Machine providing Iron Man with his aide are some of the scenes teased.

Scripted by "Tropic Thunder" co-scribbler Justin Theroux, "Iron Man 2" sees the return of director Jon Favreau to the helming seat behind Marvel's superhero. »

'Iron Man 2' trailer: Get your first look

16 December 2009 4:53 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The first trailer for "Iron Man 2" has hit the web, and it delivers in a pretty big way.

The two-minute-plus trailer for the movie (which hits theaters May 7) does not skimp on either the new characters to the sequel or the action. You'll get a fairly substantial glimpse of Mickey Rourke as Ivan Danko/Whiplash, as well as quicker looks at Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, Don Cheadle (who's taking over for Terence Howard) in his War Machine armor and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

And, of course, there's lots of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, both in and out of his armor, and portions of several big action pieces. Based on these couple of minutes, it appears that Downey and director Jon Favreau haven't lost any of the spark that made the first movie such a fun ride.

Iron Man is back in action — and this time, he brought some new friends.

The first trailer for director Jon Favreau's highly anticipated "Iron Man 2" premiered online Wednesday night, the result of a short-lived (but nonetheless mysterious) viral marketing campaign. While fans have already caught glimpses of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his heavily armed sidekick War Machine (Don Cheadle) thanks to the film's previously released poster, the new trailer easily provides the best sense of what moviegoers can expect when "Iron Man 2" hits theaters next year.

We've used our very own Stark Industries technology — by which we mean our low-grade laptops — to sort through the "Iron Man 2" trailer for a shot-by-shot breakdown. »

Box-Office Top Five

#1 "The Princess and the Frog" ($25 million)

#2 "The Blind Side" ($15.5 million)

#3 "Invictus" ($9.1 million)

#4 "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" ($8 million)

#5 "A Christmas Carol" ($6.9 million)

Disney's return to hand-drawn animation proved a royal success as "The Princess and the Frog," the House of Mouse's latest feature-length cartoon, easily won first place at this weekend's box office.

"The Princess and the Frog" earned $25 million in its first weekend in wide release, combining with two earlier weeks of limited-run engagements for a cumulative domestic take of $27.9 million. The film — which features the vocal talents of Terrence Howard, John Goodman and Oprah Winfrey, among others — cost Disney $105 million to produce, so the less-than-$30-million total isn't quite as lucrative as the studio may have hoped for. »

Disney Magic is Hopping to New Orleans in ‘The Princess and the Frog’

Chicago – The feature animation film tradition, invented by and fostered by the Walt Disney Company for close to 70 years, gets another glorious rendition in their latest release, “The Princess and the Frog.”

Rating: 4.5/5.0

In an unexpected twist, given the title, the story is set in the early part of the 20th Century in New Orleans. Tiana (voice of Anika Noni Rose) is a hard-working African-American woman who dreams of opening her own restaurant. She holds down several jobs in a dedication to her father, who never got to live out his similar dreams.

One of her best friends is Charlotte, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist in the Crescent City. She is anticipating the visit of Prince Naveen, playboy royalty from across the ocean. The Prince is only interested in the music and party aspect of old New Orleans, and subsequently falls under the spell of the evil Dr. Facilier. »

Review: The Princess And The Frog

11 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Ron Clements and John Musker return to Disney to bring fans the newest in their constantly growing vault of animated classics. The duo that most recently brought us Hercules and Treasure Planet, both of which were far less popular than most Disney animated productions, also deserve credit for two of the most popular ones… The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

The story loosely follows the traditional story, but replaces the princess of the title with a hard-working young woman from New Orleans, a woman with little money and no royalty. Tiana, voiced by Anika Noni Rose, has a dream since her childhood of opening the grandest restaurant in New Orleans with her father. She carries this dream on her back, working two jobs as a waitress and saving every little penny she earns to one day realize her dreams.

Her best friend since childhood is Charlotte, voiced by Jennifer Cody. Charlotte is not a princess either, »

Prince Naveen and Tiana in The Princess and the Frog

Photo: Walt Disney Pictures With The Princess and the Frog Disney returns to 2-D hand-drawn animation and before I even saw a frame of this film the fact we are heading back to what I believe to be the truest form of animation was enough to get me in a seat. Unfortunately this latest installment in the Disney Princess franchise isn't the absolute knockout I wanted it to be, but I would still recommend everyone go see it and judge for themselves, if only to make sure Disney continues with 2-D animation as a regular alternative to the onslaught of CGI.

Set in 1920s New Orleans and sporting jazzy musical notes The Princess and the Frog tries much harder to be pretty than it does to tell a story. In fact, the villain in this film, the evil voodoo "shadow man" Dr. »
