Probably the greatest video you'll see all week: in their effort to raise awareness for gay rights, composer Marc Shaiman (Hairspray, South Park: Bigger Longer, Uncut) and director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) teamed up for this funny stage musical denouncing California's Proposition 8. Featuring an awesome cast that includes John C. Reilly, Allison Janney, Margaret Cho, Craig Robinson, Andy Richter, Neil Patrick Harris, Maya Rudolph, Sarah Chalke, Rashida Jones, and of course... Jack Black as Jesus Christ.

In 1979, a 26-year-old lesbian screenwriter named Patricia Resnick began working on a story about three pink-collar office workers who kidnap their "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" boss, and secretly take over running their department.
The result was the feature film comedy, Nine to Five – starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and in her film debut, Dolly Parton – which went on to earn over 103 million dollars in the Us alone, making it the second top-grossing film of 1980. Not bad for a film starring three women.
The movie has since become a beloved, iconic example of female solidarity and workplace injustice, with a huge lesbian fan base.
Now, it's making its way to Broadway, as the play, 9 to 5: The Musical, starring Allison Janney, Megan Hilty, and Stephanie Block.
Resnick talked to AfterEllen about writing the film Nine to Five, bringing it to the stage, working with

Did you know that legalizing gay marriage could turn the economy around? Well, don't take my word for it, but Neil Patrick Harris presents a pretty convincing argument...in song. He and a whole slew of big name comedic actors, including Jack Black, John C. Reilly, Allison Janney, Maya Rudolph, Andy Richter, Margaret Cho, Kathy Najimy, Rashida Jones and Craig Robinson, have united for an exclusive video from FunnyorDie.com that functions as a hilarious and tuneful protest of Proposition 8. And the songs are well-written too, since the whole thing was conceived and written ...

Reilly, Kathy Najimy, Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph, Andy Richter, Craig Robinson, Lake Bell, Sarah Chalke, Margaret Cho, Allison Janney and Jack Black as, of course, Jesus, to do what Hollywood does best - make a big joke out of the whole thing. A bit of musical theater advice: If you live in or near New York or are planning to visit in the next month, and you have not seen Hairspray on Broadway, now is the time. The six-and-a-half year Broadway run ends on Jan. 4, 2009. To send it out in style, Harvey Fierstein is reprising his role as Edna Turnblad, and Marissa Jaret Winokur, the original Broadway Tracy Turnblad, returns next week to close out the show.
However, it seems the end of the Broadway run won’t stop the beat. Apparently, we can expect Hairspray 2: Electric Boogaloo in 2010. According to Adam Shankman, director of the movie version of the Broadway musical (not to be confused with the original John Waters film), there’s a concept and an outline, and it’s “going out to writers.”
In the Hairspray sequel, Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) and company will deal with the next

Bit by tenuous bit, Todd Solondz's next film is coming together. It started brewing in June of 2007, then stalled due to money issues, and then got cooking again in August with the help of Werc Werk Works. But now, oh now, the film has got its superstar.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that Paris Hilton has signed onto the dramatic comedy, along with Allison Janney and Charlotte Rampling. (In addition: "Ciaran Hinds, Shirley Henderson, Renee Taylor, Michael Lerner, Michael Kenneth Williams, Chane't Johnson, Eric Wareheim, and Chris Marquette are among the other actors that Werc Werk Works announced as joining the project. ")
Once called Life During Wartime (there's no title attached to the current news), the film still stars Paul Reubens and focuses on a family during wartime. If nothing has changed, it brings together characters from Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness with different people playing the roles. I

Paris Hilton spoils all our fun - we're excited about learning from The Hollywood Reporter that Todd Solondz has cast four more actors in his forthcoming "part sequel/part variation" to 1998's Happiness. Three of said additions are Allison Janney, Paul Ruebens and Charlotte Rampling. The fourth is Hilton.Still, if anyone could do something interesting with the Hottie And The Nottie star, it's Solondz, and despite our disappointment at ever seeing the still-rich-beyond-belief-despite-credit-crunch, attention-seeking heiress on screens ever again, we can't help but raise a curious eyebrow (which is more than she can do) at this pairing. The ironically titled Happiness remains a masterpiece of misery, a tough-going but hugely rewarding ensemble piece about the underbelly of American suburbia - a theme the director has returned to over his body of work, which also includes the equally heavy Welcome To The Dollhouse, Storytelling and Palindromes. This latest project marks

Paris Hilton is to add another movie role to her portfolio - she has been lined up for a new film by acclaimed director Todd Solondz.
The socialite will act alongside Allison Janney, Charlotte Rampling and Paul Reubens in the as-yet-untitled project about a group of dysfunctional characters.
The movie is described as "part-sequel, part variation" to Solondz's hit 1998 tale Happiness and filming is already underway in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Hilton's previous big screen experience includes the 2006 horror film House of Wax and more recently the rock opera musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, which is currently on limited release in the U.S.

It really has been too long since the last Todd Solondz picture, over 4 years by my count. The filmmaker paints awkward portraits of middleclass life without pulling any punches. While Palindromes was a bit of an art-experiment swapping actresses for the lead character ranging from a heavy black teenager to a young girl to Jennifer Jason Leigh, it seems Solondz is going back to familiar ground making a quasi-sequel to his masterpiece Happiness. Although there is not any casting overlap from the first film which starred Jane Adams, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Lara Flynn Boyle. With the new film, that still has no title, the casting is down right eclectic: Twitch favourite Shirley Henderson, Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens, prolific character Michael Lerner, screen icon Charlotte Rampling, Allison Janney, Ciaran Hinds and the kicker: Paris Hilton. Just about everything Ms. Hilton has participated in in has been a full blown train wreck,

Paris Hilton has landed a role in writer-director Todd Solondz’s new untitled dramedy. The socialite joins an ensemble cast that includes Allison Janney, Paul Reubens, Natasha Richardson, Michael Lerner and Charlotte Rampling. The story revolves around a group of individuals struggling to find a place for themselves in an unpredictable and volatile world. The movie will take off on elements from the director's breakout Happiness, in a project producers are describing as a part-sequel, part-variation on that film. Happiness opened in 1998 and centered on three middle-class New Jersey sisters dealing with their problems with their families and sex lives. It starred Philip Seymour Hoffman and Lara Flynn Boyle. Solondz previously directed Fear, Anxiety & Depression, Welcome to the Dollhouse, Storytelling and Palindromes. The new film will be financed and produced by the Minnesota-based inside Werc Werk Works and is scheduled to arrive sometime next year.

Paris Hilton is adding another movie credit to her resume. She’s been lined up for a role in a new film by Todd Solondz. She’ll appear alongside Allison Janney, Charlotte Ramping, and Paul Reubens in a movie about a group of dysfunctional characters. Well, talk about a strange cast! We never thought we’d see PeeWee and Paris in the same movie. The movie is being described as “part sequel, part variation” to Solondz’s 1998 film Happiness, which, if you’ve seen, is anything but. Talk about depressing! Filming is already underway in Puerto Rico.

Photo: New Line Cinema Nikki Blonsky must have been praying recently because it appears she may once again get a chance to be seen on the big screen as New Line Cinema has made a deal with Hairspray creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to 2007's box-office hit. The Variety article bringing the news gives off the idea this may be something small in the works, but already set to return are director-choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film. New Line hopes to bring back all the original cast despite the fact none of them had sequel clauses in their original contracts. This would mean the returnof John Travolta as Edna along with Christopher Walken, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.

Dolly Parton has written a Broadway musical version of her hit comedy movie Nine To Five.
The show will open at New York's Marquis Theater next spring, and will feature the song Parton wrote for the 1980 film, plus a host of new tracks she has penned especially.
The film followed three workers; Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as they took on their sexist boss. Their roles will be filled onstage by Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty. Mark Kudisch will play the bad boss.
Parton - whose song Nine to Five earned her an Oscar nomination in 1981 - says of the project, "It's the most fun I've ever had as a songwriter."
The musical will fill the gap at the Marquis left by the soon-to-close John Waters' show Cry-Baby.
