The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is Bizarrely Wonderful

13 hours ago | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Most Terry Gilliam movies are so packed with information, I only get the broad strokes. 12 Monkeys is about time travel. Fisher King is about mourning. Every little device crammed into a set, every line of dialogue, that stuff gets hazy. It.s just so busy, visually and metaphysically, I just let it happen.

Review: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is Gilliam.s most surreal and boundless, if that.s possible. I don.t know what it would have been had Heath Ledger lived and everything gone according to plan. What has come out of the tragedy is something bizarrely wonderful and a fitting tribute to the late artist. »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

30 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST | The Culture Post | See recent The Culture Post news »

Without being necessarily perfect, the film pretends to offer more than its counterparts who excessively rely on CGIs. This might be slightly true. However, the story is fairly thin and we’re left with a simple and decent blockbuster. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) is 1000 years old. With the help of Valentina (Lily Cole), his fifteen-years-old daughter, along with Percy (Verne Troyer) and Anton (Andrew Garfield), Valentina’s friend, Dr. Parnassus runs a travelling show. In this show, a member of the audience is invited on stage in order to be sent on the other side of a mirror. Afterwards, he/she will be plunged into his/her own imagination.

However, there’s no amusement behind this and the troupe is seriously poor. Many centuries ago, Dr. Parnassus made a deal with the Devil (Tom Waits). In exchange of immortality, Dr. Parnassus must promise he’ll give »

"Austin Powers" star Verne Troyer is hoping to get better acquainted with his fans by launching a new social networking website. The actor, who rose to fame as Mini Me in Mike Myers' films, has set up the interactive site "Looking Up" on his official page VerneTroyer.com - and is already busy uploading personal photos and videos for his followers to check out, and encouraging them to post their own snaps.

And Troyer is pleased he'll be able to use the website to keep in touch with fans. He tells Parade magazine, "I've launched a new website, VerneTroyer.com. It's linked to a social networking site called Looking Up, which is similar to Facebook. I get to chat with people that like my movies and just stay in touch with fans."

Heath Ledger`s kindness recalled

29 December 2009 11:50 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Ahead of the first anniversary of Heath Ledger's death, a fellow actor recalled his compassion. Verne Troyer, who starred with Ledger in The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, which was finished with the help of Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law, said: 'I just think of having dinner with him and being able to talk to him and being surprised that he was really open and down to earth. He was a kind, giving person, even on set. And he had huge enthusiasm, which was sort of contagious.' Of finishing the movie after Ledger's death, he said:'i think we all came together as a group, as a family, you know, to finish it for Heath. Johnny Depp just »

'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' review (3/5) - The final performance from Heath Ledger.

29 December 2009 8:10 PM, PST | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

Terry Gilliam has always had a star-crossed career. His magnum opus, "Brazil," was sliced-and-diced and essentially neutered when it hit American shores. The problems he ran into shooting "Man of La Mancha," a film he never finished, have been widely documented. "Tideland," his last film and his most personal movie to date, was (rightly) savaged by critics and ignored by most audiences. And during his latest film, "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," leading man Heath Ledger died during shooting. Of course, that means "Imaginarium" has to be considered with that in mind, doesn't it? Because Gilliam's solution, having Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell to step into Ledger's shoes for various sequences, wasn't a choice borne out of anything but necessity. Essentially, it's a conceit that you have to decide if you're able to forgive as an audience member, but since you know the history behind the film and Ledger's death, »

Troyer: 'Ledger was kind and giving'

29 December 2009 5:10 PM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Verne Troyer has paid tribute to the late Heath Ledger. Ledger, who starred alongside Troyer in The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus, died while the film was still being made. His part was later filled by Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell. "I actually didn't even really think about whether we'd ever go back into production after his death," Troyer told Parade. "My first thoughts were with his family. I just thought it was impossible that he was gone. Then, when [director] Terry Gilliam sort of recovered, he talked to us about not quitting. "I think we all came together as a group, (more) »

Johnny Depp has spoken out about replacing Heath Ledger in the late star's last film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. According to HitFlix, Depp has joined Jude Law as the second actor to open up about the movie. "It was an honour to represent Heath. He was the only player out there breathing heavy down the back of every established actor's neck with a thundering and ungovernable talent that came up on you quick, hissing rather mischievously with that cheeky grin, 'Hey... In Theaters: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

28 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

For the first 20 minutes or so of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Terry Gilliam's latest labor of love and chaos, I fought off the suspicion that I'd rather be watching a documentary about the film's blighted production. This is partly Gilliam's fault -- the introductory sequence is painfully oblique, laborious in its attempts at whimsy and off-kilter charm -- and partly that of Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe, whose Lost in La Mancha, a chronicle of Gilliam's disastrous attempt to adapt Don Quixote, was as layered and entertaining as the director's best work, all of which is over a decade behind him. Famously hamstrung by the January 2008 death of its star, Heath Ledger, Imaginarium was saved by the subbing-in of three actors to cover Ledger's unfinished scenes; the film then faced the death of one of its producers and continuous funding and sale snags. The Gilliam curse was beginning to outpace, »

Johnny Depp finally discusses stepping in for Heath Ledger in 'Imaginarium'

Like many of Terry Gilliam's films "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" almost didn't make it to the screen, but as fate would hand it three premier actors stepped in when the production was its lowest point. Heath Ledger's tragic passing in the middle of filming could have forced "Parnassus" to remain unfinished or a shadow of what it was supposed to be, but thanks to a break in the shooting schedule and a lucky fantastical story element other actors could step in for the departed Oscar winner. Those gentleman turned out to be Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law.  Out »

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "Avatar" ($75 million)

#2 "Sherlock Holmes" ($65.4 million)

#3 "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" ($50.2 million)

#4 "It's Complicated" ($22.1 million)

#5 "Up in the Air" ($11.8 million)

Despite his brilliant deductive reasoning and combat proficiency, Sherlock Holmes proved no match for the Na'vi of Pandora as James Cameron's "Avatar" won first place at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Still, victory wasn't entirely effortless for the 3-D science-fiction epic, as "Avatar" surrendered Wednesday night to the debut of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" and also succumbed to "Sherlock Holmes" on Friday.

But a closer look at the numbers reveals that "Avatar" never had much to worry about, as the film lost to "Alvin" on Wednesday by a mere $2.4 million and an even smaller »
