Cop Out – Trailer

Cop Out

Directed by: Kevin Smith

Starring: Tracy Morgan, Bruce Willis, Adam Brody, Seann William Scott

Rating: R

Release Date: February 6, 2010

Trailer Score: 3/10

My Thoughts: Ouch. I don’t slight Kevin Smith for making a truly “Hollywood” movie. Eventually he was going to step away from his own scripts and attempt to show himself as a director capable of handling other material. But this is the result? Obviously I haven’t seen the movie yet, but this laughless trailer has me worried. Sure there will be more cussing and raunchy humor (with Smith it’s guaranteed), but the staleness of the material in this preview has me concerned that even Smith’s staple humor style will be disappointing.

I should probably watch “30 Rock” like people tell me. I don’t think Tracy Morgan has been funny except on SNL, and he doesn’t make his case any better here. His »

Kevin Smith’s Cop Out Trailer Starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan

24 December 2009 8:55 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

We've got one more trailer to squeeze in before Christmas, and I think it's one a lot of people have been waiting to see: Kevin Smith's latest comedy Cop Out (formerly known as A Couple of Dicks)! This is the first time Kevin Smith has directed from someone else's script, and lucky for him, the script by Robb Cullen and Mark Cullen was on the 2008 Black List of best unproduced screenplays. He also has a pretty awesome cast in Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. So does it look like Cop Out is going to be one of the best comedies of 2009? Well... uh, I'm not so sure about that. I have to be honest, the trailer didn't really do much for me. I thought the intro was kind of clever, but other than that, there wasn't really much here that made me laugh. I do think »

Kevin Smith’s ‘Cop Out’ Gets A Trailer

24 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

After months of debate, Warner Bros. and Kevin Smith have finally come to terms on a title for their newest picture The movie, now known as Cop Out, stars Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, and Sean William Scott.

The film, originally titled “Couple of Dicks” then a “Couple of Cops”, is the story of two cops who are trying to find a rare and very expensive baseball card, and the fanatical gangster who wants it. Willis’ character, Jimmy, needs to get the card back in order to pay for his daughter’s wedding. His partner, Paul (Morgan), is too obsessed with his wife’s infidelity to really stay focused on the job.

Having gone through that synopsis, this trailer covers none of that. What we get is a lot of Willis and Morgan being funny, and a movie that looks (almost) nothing like anything that Kevin Smith has ever done before. »

Kevin Smith’s Cop Out Trailer Hits Online!

The cop comedy formerly known as A Couple of Dicks, now Cop Out, has premiered its trailer. Warner Bros. has unleashed the trailer for the film directed by Kevin Smith which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. The film is sort of an ode to the 80s buddy cop films.

Two longtime NYPD partners on the trail of a stolen, rare, mint-condition baseball card find themselves up against a merciless, memorabilia-obsessed gangster. Jimmy (Bruce Willis) is the veteran detective whose missing collectible is his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, and Paul (Tracy Morgan) is his “partner-against-crime” whose preoccupation with his wife’s alleged infidelity makes it hard for him to keep his eye on the ball.

Kevin Smith's 'Cop Out' Gets a Trailer

24 December 2009 7:20 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Kevin Smith's Cop Out (formerly A Couple of Dicks) has its first trailer online at Apple -- and if you knew absolutely nothing about it, you might find it only mildly amusing. Don't get me wrong, it's funny! But other than a few scenes of wit and a few glimpses of guns, there's nothing that would suggest that it's throwback to the 1980s, or this generation's Road House. It's really cut to look like Generic Cop Comedy, heavy on the Tracy Morgan shenanigans, low on plot, and free of any Kevin Smith. Smith's name isn't even on the trailer, which I suppose isn't too surprising (I mean, Iron Man doesn't exactly slap Jon Favreau on its trailers either), but it suggests the studio doesn't want to alienate those who associate Smith with dick jokes and controversy.

Still, there's glimpses of truly funny stuff here. I love the "I was in the moment! »

Drop the 'Dicks' and You Have the Trailer for Kevin Smith's 'Cop Out'

24 December 2009 1:23 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I was reading an interview with Kevin Smith over at Entertainment Weekly on how his buddy cop feature starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan at Warner Bros. went from the working title of A Couple of Dicks to Cop Out, and the short story is rather obvious and boring, but their attempt to get it worked out is a bit interesting. Before watching the trailer, here's a snippet: Warner Bros. decided, "Hey man, we'll call the networks and see if we're going to get any problems, months before the movie's ever going to come out." The top 3 networks -- CBS, ABC, NBC -- said we can't run one of your spots before 9 o'clock.

I'm like, "Well what about Inglourious Basterds?" And I guess, because of the spelling, they got away with it. So we were like, "Can we call it A Couple of D.I.C.s?" Because that's the proper acronym for detectives, »

The first trailer for Warner Bros. Pictures' "Cop Out" has been made available for viewing pleasure. Making its way out via Apple, the video gives the first look at two longtime NYPD partners, Jimmy and Paul, whose actions in tracking down a stolen vintage baseball card create funny moments in the film.

Cop Out Trailer Is Here!

It's the moment lots of you have been waiting for: the first proper look at Kevin Smith's new film, Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and 30 Rock's Tracy Morgan.Formerly known as A Couple Of Dicks (stupid Us TV networks and their advertising rules), the movie follows a pair of NYPD 'tecs as they get tangled up with mobsters, a stolen baseball card and a sexy female witness. Though you'd be hard pressed to guess most of that from this first glance. And how is it? Er… Based on the evidence of the trailer, it would be better off if we referred to it as Studio Produced Cop Comedy Drama 6179. There are some slick titles, a fast-cut montage of scenes that show Willis and Morgan bickering (and point up that Sean William Scott and Morgan work better as comedy partners than the leading duo), with the processed feeling of generic comedy. »

First Trailer for Kevin Smith’s Cop Out

23 December 2009 8:22 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

For some time we have been following the buddy cop comedy that was once refreshingly called A Couple of Dicks, then boringly A Couple of Cops, and finally settled on the somewhere-in-between Cop Out. The film represents Kevin Smith’s first directorial effort which he did not also script, and stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as a police team whose “adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money”. Today, Warner Brothers released the first trailer for the film.

So far, I have been looking forward to this film, partly because I would like to see how Smith does with a film free of his distinct writing style, and partly because I like the comedic potential of the partnership between Morgan and Willis. This trailer did nothing for me, though. It relies heavily on Tracy Morgan lines, and in this »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Two

Case 39

Opens: January 1st 2010

Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley

Director: Christian Alvart

Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.

Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out this year for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman's 'more alien than the »

No Dicking Around for Kevin Smith’s Couple of Cops

14 December 2009 11:49 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

The title of Kevin Smith’s latest comedy, “A Couple of Dicks” has been changed to “Cop Out”, which is both clever and stupid. Stupid that he was forced to change it by the studio because, apparently, “Dicks” frighten people; and clever because, well, by giving in to the studio and changing it, he’s sort of “copping out”, if you will. Then again, I’m sure Smith is a practical bloke, and realizes people who go to see Kevin Smith movies could care less what the title of the movie is as long as they know it’s a Kevin Smith movie. The film is about two cops who get involved in locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money. It stars Bruce willis, Michelle Trachtenberg, Jason Lee, Seann William Scott, Adam Brody, Tracy Morgan, Kevin Pollak, Fred Armisen, Guillermo Díaz, »

The 15 Worst Movies of the Decade

14 December 2009 2:58 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There were a lot of bad movies released during the past decade. That’s not anything that distinguishes the aughts from any other decade before it, but then most of these movies were bad in the usual, torturous ways. There is, of course, a lot of room for debate over these picks and readers should be aware that for my own sanity (sorry Rob Schneider), I purposefully skipped many top contenders. Without further ado, in descending order, our worst 15: The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) I’m not a fan of movies about really stupid people behaving stupidly, and that’s all that happens in this smoldering pile of TV adapted junk. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott indulge their worst instincts in a laugh free assemblage of moronic Southern stereotypes and car crashes that’s like a horrible, Z grade 80s comedy nightmare come to life. It’s even got Burt Reynolds. Lady in the Water »

Push the Button – What’s in the Box?

9 December 2009 6:58 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Richard Kelly’s debut,  Donnie Darko was one of the most original films of the decade. Featuring a time travel storyline wrapped up in a high school comedy drama, it stood up to repeated viewings. He came thudding down to earth with his follow up Southland Tales. The three hour cut featuring the cream of acting talent (!) Sean William Scott, The Rock and Justin Timberlake received a vitriolic reception at the Cannes Film Festival and was re-cut for its British release. With his new film The Box, fans hoped that he could reign in his some of his more outlandish ideas and prove he was more than a one trick pony. So it is hugely disappointing to report that this box should have stayed closed. Like Darren Aronovsky’s The Fountain, it’s a film that looks fantastic, but has got a little too concerned with its own importance.  The »

No ‘Hancock 2′ Anytime Soon

2 December 2009 11:03 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There’s been much talk about a sequel to the 2008 surprise superhero hit, Hancock, with conversation picking up particularly when it comes to the cast of Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman possibly returning to do another. Director Peter Berg said a few months ago that everyone was excited to return, but not long after that Bateman came out and said he hadn’t heard anything about him returning (we’re still not sure if that cluelessness was applicable to Smith and Theron, too).

However, when Berg sounded pretty excited about directing Hancock 2, that was before he landed the Battleship gig, a big-screen adaptation set for release in 2011 with a production start date of Spring 2010. That ties Berg up a lot for what I would guess would be the better part of a year. And that appears to be one of the big reasons why we shouldn’t expect Hancock 2 anytime soon. »
