A little over three months ago we reported on the news that the mindlessly fun 2008 movie, Death Race, was going to be getting a sequel – or rather, as was reported at the time by Shock Till You Drop, a prequel that would lead up to the first Death Race and Jason Statham’s antics as top driver Jensen Ames.
And now, thanks to SpoilerTV we get some info on both what the plot and the characters will be , by way of casting call info. Nothing has changed in terms of it being a prequel, in fact this news is kind of a confirmation of that. It will indeed take place before the first film, this time being called Death Race: Frankenstein Lives (Frankenstein is the name of the top driver, Fyi, they’re not just trying to turn it into a horror movie for no reason…).
So what is »

Spoiler TV have got their hands on casting call details for the sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 actioner Death Race which, lest you've forgot, starred Jason Statham as 'Frankenstein' - a prisoner on Terminal Island who is coerced to enter Death Race, a gladiator-like televised fight-to-the-death.
Anderson is set to producer the sequel, entitled Death Race: Franksenstein Lives and is searching for a handful of stars to take roles including Carl 'Luke' Lucas, an assertive, strong and charismatic convict, September Jones, a model turned 'insatiably ambitious and eye-poppingly gorgeous' journalist with the soul of an ice-pick, Elizabeth Jame Case, the sexy card girl for the fights and later a navigator in the driving stages who's teamed with Lucas...
A number of lesser roles require martial-arts skills so it looks like we can expect very much the same of the sequel as we had in the first, which was »

Fancy stepping into Jason Statham's shoes? Handy behind the wheel of a souped-up motor? Might be time to get yourself an agent then, as casting has just kicked off for Death Race: Frankenstein Lives, the sequel to last year's epic of twisted metal, burning rubber and unlikely plot contrivance. Here's the plot description so far: "Newly arrived at Terminal Island, a prison for the most unredeemable [sic] of convicts, Carl 'Luke' Lucas must prove his mettle in a race to the death". Lucas is described in the casting notes as a "right-hand man to a notorious mobster for twelve years", given life-imprisonment for killing a cop in a botched bank robbery. He's offered a deal by the Da if he turns state's evidence, but opts to take his chances behind bars, resulting in Varooom and Kersmash.Initial talk was of a prequel, setting up the corrupt and lethal prison »

Isn't it sad when one member of a codependent viewing party is ready to move on and the other one isn't? This week's must-see episode of FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which repeats Saturday at 11 p.m. Et) took a look at that very important issue. At the start of "Mac and Dennis Break Up," the guys showed up at Dee's apartment together to borrow a big bowl for their movie night — Predator, yet again. (Mac had to hold the bowl while Dennis stood beside him and made snide comments, they explained.) Dee forced Dennis to second guess the »

Cause you demanded it, Universal has greenlit a sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Death Race” remake. Made for $45 million, the middling film (like all of Anderson’s films, “Death Race” wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great, either) grossed $75 million worldwide, and in Hollywood that means sequel. Or actually, prequel in this case. The movie will focus on the man known as Frankenstein, the mask-wearing driver from the first movie who was killed and replaced by Jason Statham’s character. Gee, I hope I didn’t give anything away. Those things only happened in the first 20 minutes of “Death Race”, after all. Also, producer Jeremy Bolt (Anderson’s long-time partner in crime) has confirmed to Styd that production on the prequel will commence as early as next year, with the producers now casting the role of Frankenstein. Obviously Statham won’t be returning, and in any case, it »

I’ve been busy. I packed in three films over the weekend, and rather than dedicate a single review to each (and since others at t5m have already covered 2 of the films in depth) I’ve cut down my response to the bare essentials. Energy-efficient reviewing is going to be the next big thing. Why not put it on your iPhone/BlackBerry? Have you even got time to go to the cinema? Do something productive! Dead Man Running Most of the funding for this film was put up by Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole. They are professional footballers, in case you didn’t know, and as you might imagine their taste in films is roundly reflected in this cockney gangster action flick. It’s an absolutely ridiculous romp* through the underbelly of London and eventually Manchester, with an ex-con forced to payback £100,000 to an American kingpin (played with surprising »

Mickey Rourke has publicly thanked Sylvester Stallone and Sex Pistols star Steve Jones for standing by him when he hit rock bottom.
The actor made a triumphant return to the big screen last year, with a starring role in The Wrestler, after more than a decade struggling with drug addiction and alcoholism.
Rourke also battled through a messy divorce with actress Carre Otis in 1998, following a turbulent relationship.
But the star is thankful he was surrounded by supportive friends, who helped him through the bad times.
He says, "A lot of those who let you down are those who seemed the closest to you. They're the ones running out of your house with the silver when it all goes wrong, and when they jump ship that hurts. There are some people who stuck with me: Sly Stallone has always been a good friend to me. Stevie Jones - he's a good man. Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Joe Strummer - God rest his soul - from The Clash: they were my guys. And we had a great time."
And Rourke has found a new pal in British actor Jason Statham, after filming scenes together for their new movie The Expendables.
He adds, "I just did a few days with Jason Statham on Sly's new film and he's become a good friend." »

Chuck Russell has been attached to a lot of movies since “The Scorpion King” in 2002, but as far as I know he hasn’t finished or actually come through with any of them. (What’s up with “Northern Lights”, Chuckie?) The latest project to strike his fancy is a $70 million dollar retelling of the classic “Arabian Nights” tale, in which Russell co-wrote the script and is attached to direct in the 3D format. Russell’s version of “Arabian Nights” will follow a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with fellow good guys Sinbad, Aladdin, and his genie to rescue the comely Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers. Much CG carpet-riding and sword fights ensue. The boys at Inferno Entertainment will foot the bill. They have “The Experiment” with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker coming up, and the action-thriller “The Killer Elite” with Jason Statham on tap. »

Rediscovering Roberts
Eric Roberts never really left, but 2009 audiences are learning (or relearning) the charms of the actor Mickey Rourke has called the best he ever worked with.
By Terry Keefe
(This article is currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)
“Eric Roberts is the [expletive deleted] Man,” proclaimed Mickey Rourke at this past year’s Independent Spirit Awards, while accepting his trophy for Best Male Lead, at the very beginning of a speech which then saw him singling out Roberts, his one-time co-star in 1984’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, as someone who was worthy of a comeback like Rourke had with The Wrestler. From the audience, Roberts himself watched his friend at the podium with what looked to be a combination of embarrassment at being mentioned and some pleasure at the same, finally throwing it back at Rourke by shouting good-naturedly, “Accept your award!” For »

After sending Jason Statham on two mad dashes and putting Gerard Butler into a computer game, it's no surprise that Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's first stab at TV isn't a Jane Austen adaptation. Nope, the hyperactive directing/producing/demolition duo have pitched a one-hour drama to Us network NBC called Zeroes. So what's it about? "We want to drop right into it and sustain the absolute most berserk state of crisis, when all of the options have been exhausted," Taylor tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We want to take...

80's action stars, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, have got together on October 24 to shoot a scene for "The Expendables", and details on the scene have been shared by Stallone himself. To Entertainment Weekly, the director/writer/star of the actioner provided further info about the characters Willis and Schwarzenegger take on among others.
Confirming that the scene takes place in a church, Sly revealed that Willis portrays the one who hires his mercenary group for the death-defying mission, while Schwarzenegger stars as his character's old rival. Describing the scene in more detail, the 63-year-old gushed, "Bruce says 'Well, there's one other person I want to talk to before I hire you. And then Arnold, who plays my old rival, walks in."
"We have a history together," Sly continued explaining the fall-out his character has with Schwarzenegger's. "And we go back and forth and I tell him that »

Entertainment Weekly talked with Sylvester Stallone about the pivotal, 5-minute scene with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis for Stallone's The Expendables which we first reported here. Sly talked candidly about the six hour shoot:
Stallone said the superstar-summit scene takes place in a church, where Willis' nasty antagonist has summoned Stallone's macho mercenary to finally meet him face-to-face, take measure of him, and possibly hire him for a death-defying mission. But just as the meeting gets under way and smartass smalltalk is made, in walks another killer-for-hire - Stallone's longtime rival, who Willis has also invited to this job interview: Ah-nuld.
"Bruce says 'Well, there's one other person I want to talk to before I hire you," says Stallone. "And then Arnold, who plays my old rival, walks in. We have a history together. And we go back and forth and I tell him that I should have shot him »

The first trailer for The Expendables made its way online the other week although it was unofficial, unfinished and quickly removed everywhere at the request of Lionsgate.
The movie brings together a plethora of action stars, most notably, those who kicked ass during the 80s. It was shaping up to be a perfect reunion of the stars we loved from back in the day. When we got to see the unofficial trailer, the quality of what we saw sure made it feel like an 80s action flick, which to me was good and bad.
From the footage, we never got to see two big names who we know are involved with the movie: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. Thanks to an Entertainment Weekly exclusive chat with Stallone, we now have some details on what Willis and the Governator will be playing.
EW spoke with Stallone (who’s also directing the »

Action movie juggernauts Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis shared the limelight throughout the '80s and '90s, starring in one eye-popping spectacle after another. The three actors even shared ownership of the once-popular Planet Hollywood chain of movie memorabilia-themed restaurants. But one thing they never shared before is screen time. That's going to change once The Expendables explodes into theaters next summer.
Just last week, the publicist for The Expendables blogged about being on set for the filming of a pivotal scene featuring the three superstars in an empty church. In a recent phone interview with EW, Stallone gave a brief description of that historic scene, which he described as "amazing."
Bruce says "Well, there's one other person I want to talk to before I hire you," and then Arnold, who plays my old rival, walks in. We have a history together. And we go back and »

We've said it before and we'll say it again: we couldn't be more pumped for Sylvester Stallone's all-star action extravaganza, The Expendables. If you've been tracking this pecs-pumping, pyrotechnics-palooza with us, then you're already hip to the summer 2010 film's hulking, Who's Who he-man cast (Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, etc.). You've also seen the early photos of a tattooed and totally ripped Stallone and heard that Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger would drop by for cameo appearances, pretty much cementing the film as a one-stop shopping site for '80s blow-'em-up blockbuster lovers. »

The first official look at The Expendables has hit the net. Running at over three minutes, the preview shows a plethora of action and a handful of comedy mixed in with the gore and violence. The upcoming 2010 action film, written and directed by Sylvester Stallone pays tribute to the blockbuster action films during the 1980s and early '90s. The plot follows a team of the world's most dangerous and highly-trained mercenaries who go on a mission to South America to overthrow and assassinate a powerful, evil dictator and his army, who have been causing devastation, chaos and torture for the last twenty years. Producer Avi Lerner has reported that the film will be cut down to two versions, a PG-13-rating edit and an R-rated version, both of which will be screen tested to see which one will be officially released. However what's really attracting attention is its all star cast listed below. »

Sylvester Stallone has put together a massive, action star cast for his movie The Expendables, including Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Dolph Lundgren,Terry Crews, and Randy Couture. The movie also contains a scene between Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Bruce Willis, which is the first time all three have appeared together in one movie. The Expendables' unit publicist Sheryl Main wrote about they day they shot all three action movie icons on her blog.
The whole crew was mesmerized as we watched the three of them play off of each other in a pivotal scene that sets up the whole movie. And while I can't/don't want to give too much away I can tell you that Arnold's character is Trench and Bruce is Church, the scene was shot in an empty church without extras and minimal set dec and it has tension and humor — what »

Guy Ritchie and producer Joel Silver are planning to bring DC Comics' pale-skinned, killcrazy alien Lobo to big screens... but how? According to Mania, they're still trying to figure that out. Would it be someone with experience and a physique, such as Dwayne Johnson, Ritchie regular Jason Statham or his ROCKnROLLA star Gerard Butler? Will they go the all-cg performance-capture Gollum-style route? Or will it be a costume-enhanced human a la Hellboy? Whatever method they utilize to bring the... »
