'America's Next Top Model' recap: The sea was angry that day

12 November 2009 5:55 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Dudes. If this wasn't straight-up the worst episode of Top Model ever, I don't know what was. Really and truly: I think this was rock bottom. Which is maybe good, because that means next week (and next cycle, I guess? hope?) will have to be better, and that gives us all something to look forward to. But for now, we'll have to do the difficult -- the nearly unthinkable, really -- and look back, back, back into the bleak abyss that was this week's episode. I call it H-to-b recapping: head to barf. On the way back from last week's elimination, »

The Play’s the Thing for Aniston, Ashton, Demi, Brooke, and More

10 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Too many stars to fit in one frame: Anthony Mackie, Brooke Shields, Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Liev Schrieber, Naomi Watts, Jeremy Sisto, Emmy Rossum, Julia Stiles, and Gaby Hoffmann are among the cast members taking a curtain call after performing in the 24 Hour Plays. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images. It has been an unusually starry fall on Broadway—Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet, and, later this month, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury in A Little Night Music, just to name a few. But rarely has there been such assemblage of big names on one Broadway stage as there was last night at the American Airlines Theater. Among the performers were Jennifer Aniston, David Cross, Billy Crudup, Rosario Dawson, John Krasinski, Ashton Kutcher, Eva Mendes, Demi Moore, Rosie Perez, Sam Rockwell, Liev Schrieber, Brooke Shields, Julia Stiles, Amber Tamblyn, and Naomi Watts. Jennifer Plays With Demi, Emily, and Naomi in NYC

10 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Jennifer Aniston was in La last week for her stylist's wedding, but she popped up in NYC last night to take part in the annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She joined a handful of actor couples for the evening, including Emily Blunt and John Krasinki as well as Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts. Demi Moore was a lot more covered up than her recent W cover, as she posed with husband Ashton Kutcher. Jennifer joined her fellow thespians onstage to sing "Yellow Submarine" and take part in the hastily-written theater exercise, which was held to benefit arts in education programs in public schools. She took her bow next to a similarly-dressed Brooke Shields before moving on for some after-hours fun with Ashton and Demi. View 35 Photos › To see more from the event, just read more. Aniston Takes To The Stage In New York

10 November 2009 4:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Jennifer Aniston took to the stage in New York City on Monday night to show off her singing skills in a star-studded theatre event.

The former Friends actress signed up to appear in The 24-Hour Plays, a series of six short works which are written, rehearsed and performed in just one day. The gruelling task gives actors less than 12 hours to polish their performance before the curtain goes up.

Aniston appeared in Ramen Noodle alongside Brooke Shields, and showed off her vocal ability with a rendition of Beatles classic Yellow Submarine.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore also appeared in the evening of short plays, as well as Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Sam Rockwell and Julia Stiles. »

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

Myriad Sheds no Tears for 'Cry of the Owl'

6 November 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- If you can't sell it. Distribute it! Rather than letting a title collect dust or selling at a big loss, an uncomfortable scenario that happens to the best of film studios (see Magnolia's The Burning Plain as a recent example) and this is exactly the dilemma that Myriad Pictures has found itself in with Cry of the Owl. THR reports that the company has plans to release the thriller in theaters before the chilly weather really sets in. They have a deal with Paramount for VOD, DVD.  Written and directed by video helmer Jamie Thraves, the adaptation of the 1962 novel by Patricia Highsmith sees Julia Stiles playing a woman who falls in love with her stalker. Patty Considine will play the man who moves to Stiles' suburban town and begins spying on her. Her jilted ex, complicates matters further when he plots revenge against her. I've been curious about »

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed." Bill Pullman Does Oleanna

17 October 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The revival of David Mamet's 1992 Oleanna in current production at the Golden Theater stars one of my favorite actors, Bill Pullman, whose elastic face and frenetic movements are on full display in this theatrical pas de deux with the patrician, cool Julia Stiles. They play John, a professor on the verge of tenure and closing on a new house, and Carol, a student who is failing his class. As with all Mamet's plays--most recently seen in last year's superb production of "Speed the Plow"--the subject is language, the rapid fire staccato of one liners, half completed words, thoughtful and thoughtless arguments that make up contemporary conversation, confrontation, and conflict. Oleanna became topical in its day as it coincided with the Clarence Thomas/ Anita Hill contretemps, which was its good fortune and bad. Something is lost when Mamet is used... »

What are Your Guilty Pleasure Movies, but Don't Like to Admit It?

14 October 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I thought the response to my "Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen? " post was excellent, and on top of everything so many of you said, several new questions came as a result. One of them, offered by 'Steve Mott', asks the question in the headline: Do you have guilty pleasures you don't like to admit to?

Steve lists his guilty pleasure as 10 Things I Hate About You, a film I personally love and was just discussing recently with a friend when the topic of "Where the hell did Julia Stiles go?" came up. To that effect I also love Save the Last Dance and to answer the Stiles question before someone gets smart in the comments, yes, she has the Bourne films and wrote and directed a film starring Zooey Deschanel and has also been doing plenty of work on stage. Moving along...

Pullman And Stiles Struggle To Win Over Broadway

12 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles have earned mixed reviews from Broadway theatre critics with their revival of David Mamet's play Oleanna.

The show, about the power struggle between a university professor and his female student, opened in New York on Sunday night to a lukewarm response, with Stiles being criticised for her lack of emotion.

The New York Post writes, "Stiles - raw and intense, her mouth compressed into a grim line - barely reins in what you suspect are pools of anger," while Daily Variety says of her performance: "Stiles has a tendency toward sulkiness that doesn't do much to soften her impossible character."

Pullman fairs better with theatre experts, who have hailed his portrayal of lecturer John.

Bloomberg.com says, "The revival does profit here from good performances and apt direction. Pullman is an expert at good-natured masculinity turning ugly when sorely beleaguered..."

Daily Variety adds, "Pullman is a far more emotionally available actor... (His) body language is transfixing."

However, the Associated Press notes the complexity of Mamet's work and credits the actors for their efforts: "Oleanna is a fiendishly difficult play to pull off, but Pullman and Stiles, under the precise, careful direction of Doug Hughes, make the most of Mamet's seemingly imprecise language."

Oleanna is not the only big-name Broadway production to face criticism this autumn - Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig's turn in A Steady Rain has been largely panned by theatre reviewers, while Jude Law's Hamlet split critics in their opinion. »

Can divisive 'Oleanna' unite Tony voters?

12 October 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

David Mamet likes to provoke audiences so he should be pleased with the divided critical response to the Broadway revival of "Oleanna." This battle of the sexes was a huge hit off Broadway in 1992 but this production marks its first Broadway staging. The stars of this version of "Oleanna" are Bill Pullman -- who earned a Drama Desk nod for his only other Broadway appearance in 2002's "The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?" -- and rialto newcomer Julia Stiles. Stiles starred in an acclaimed 2004 London production of "Oleanna" opposite Aaron Eckhart and she and Pullman appeared in this same staging earlier this year in Los Angeles. Mamet is a prolific writer with half a dozen works having premiered on Broadway and another -- "Race" -- opening this December. Just two of these -- "Glengarry Glen Ross" and "Speed-the-Plow" -- contended for best play at the Tony Awards. Though "Glengarry Glen Ross »

Mark Wahlberg Remakes Icelandic Oscar Submission 'Reykjavik-Rotterdam'

6 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Mark Wahlberg has appeared in a handful of remakes throughout his career, but the only ones worth seeing are the two reworked from foreign films ("The Departed;" and I'm counting British classic "The Italian Job" as the other). Hopefully this means good things for the Hollywood remake of Oskar Jonasson's "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," which might star the artist formerly known as Marky Mark, according to Variety. Wahlberg is also attached to produce the new version of the Icelandic thriller along with fellow "Entourage" executive producer Stephen Levinson.

"Reykjavik," one of 60 films in the running for next year's foreign-language Oscar, is about a former alcohol smuggler recruited for one last job. The original has the protagonist as a former crew member of a freighter regularly traveling between Reykjavik, Iceland, and Rotterdam, Netherlands. For the English-language version the locations will be changed of course, but to what? New York and Toronto, maybe?
