DeGeneres Fights Back Tears As Seven Year Old Plays Wedding Tune

17 November 2008 11:01 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Seven-year-old piano prodigy Emily Bear had U.S. TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres holding back tears when she performed a song she'd written as a gift to the newlywed.

The little composer, who has performed for heads of state and already has two albums to her name, told the host that she had been inspired to pen Once Upon A Wish by DeGeneres marriage to Portia De Rossi this past summer, during a recent taping of Ellen.

Stunned DeGeneres was visibly touched by the gesture, but held back tears when the youngster said, "I want to give it (song) to you because you got your wish."

Sykes 'Comes Out' At Rally

17 November 2008 6:09 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Comedienne Wanda Sykes has confirmed she secretly wed her gay partner just before same-sex marriages were banned in California.

The Curb Your Enthusiasm regular made the announcement at a rally against the passage of Proposition 8, which ended a summer of gay weddings, on Saturday.

She told the crowd at the Las Vegas protest, "Everybody who knows me personally, they know I'm gay. And that's the way people should be able to live our lives, really. We shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something we automatically should have as citizens of this country.

"I'm proud to be a woman, I'm proud to be a black woman and I'm proud to be gay."

Her decision to come out at the rally has been applauded by gay rights leaders.

Gay + Lesbian Alliance Against Discrimination (GLAAD) President Neil G. Giuliano says, "People living openly and honestly increases visibility of our community and has a tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance as we continue our march to equality."

Sykes became the second high-profile comedienne to wed her gay partner this year - Ellen DeGeneres exchanged vows with actress Portia De Rossi in August.

Ironically, Sykes' character in U.S. TV sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine recently wed co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus on the show for immigration purposes.

Schwarzenegger Urges Supreme Court To Overturn Proposition 8

10 November 2008 11:28 AM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Movie star-turned-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is urging the state Supreme Court to overturn the controversial bill that banned gay marriage last week.

The Proposition 8 bill was voted in earlier this month, overturning an earlier ruling legalising same-sex unions in the state.

In an interview on network CNN on Sunday he said, "It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end. I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

Speaking to gay marriage supporters he added, "I learned that you should never ever give up... They should never give up. They should be on it and on it until they get it done."

Gay unions were legalised in the state in May, which led to a flurry of celebrity weddings including TV host Ellen DeGeneres' marriage to longtime partner Portia de Rossi in August.

Ellen DeGeneres Gives Sarah Palin a Piece of Her Mind

23 October 2008 6:04 AM, PDT | From www.actressarchives.com | See recent Actress Archives news

Ellen DeGeneres recently married girlfriend Portia Di Rossi thanks to the legalization of gay marriage in California, and now the beloved talk-show host has hit back at Sarah Palin’s statement that she wants to make gay marriage illegal on a federal level. DeGeneres used her talk show as a forum to let the vice-presidential candidate know exactly how she felt about the issue--and if we were Sarah Palin we wouldn’t bother mailing Ellen DeGeneres any free buttons or stickers to try and sway her vote. On the show Wednesday, Ellen addressed the issue by saying, “I don’t know if you saw this, but Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Sarah Palin ...

Ellen DeGeneres Sends Sarah Palin Message About Proposition 8

22 October 2008 8:39 PM, PDT | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

Ellen DeGeneres' fierce battle against Proposition 8 transcends to her talk show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday, October 22 when she attacks Vice President nominee Sarah Palin for being pro. The openly lesbian 50-year-old delivers a message to Palin, saying that she doesn't like the idea of Palin changing the constitution.

"Vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin says she's in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage. (She) basically wants to change the constitution," DeGeneres says. "So if you're wondering - I'm sure you are - how I feel about this, I don't like it. I don't agree. Maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal, but I feel that we're all equal."

DeGeneres who married long-time girlfriend Portia De Rossi in August this year, continued "I don't know what people are scared of. Maybe they think that their children will be influenced.

DeGeneres Speaks Against Gay Marriage-ban In PSA

15 October 2008 12:03 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Beloved TV host Ellen DeGeneres has produced a public service announcement to persuade California citizens to say no to a proposed initiative to ban gay marriage in the U.S. state.

The openly gay comedienne has spoken out against the proposed Proposition 8 bill - a high-level state vote in the upcoming November elections to make same-sex marriages constitutionally illegal in California.

Gay marriages were only legalised in May, and DeGeneres and partner Portia de Rossi married in August under the new law.

And the star is doing her part to urge voters to tick no when the bill hits the ballot box next month, in a video posted on her official website.

DeGeneres has come under fire by gay rights advocates for not donating any money to the anti-Proposition 8 campaign, despite her public disapproval of the move.

To date, Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg have both donated $100,000 (GBP54,000) to the movement, and DeGeneres' mother, Betty, has given $700 (GBP378).

Can Saving Marriage Save Gay Marriage?

2 October 2008 5:17 PM, PDT | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

Here Films, a tiny production company, has a small film on their hands that they think has the potential to make a big impact. In case you are living in some sort of Lost situation and didn't catch the hoopla surrounding Ellen Degeneres getting married to Portia De Rossi, gay marriage has recently been legalized in Cali. Although many of us Californians want to keep it that way, there is another side to the story. Proposition 8 will be on the November ballot in California. The proposition used to be called the "Protect Marriage Pact," and is now called the "Eliminates Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act." In case you can't tell just from the names, the Proposition has gone from jedi to sith in just a few months. The act is colloquially referred to as "The Ban on Gay Marriage" and would make gay marriage illegal again in California, if passed.

DeGeneres Feels 'More In Love' Since Wedding

28 September 2008 11:58 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The beloved U.S. TV star wed former Ally McBeal actress De Rossi last month following the legalisation of gay marriages in California in May.

DeGeneres recently urged people to vote against the state's Proposition 8 bill which would change the law back to make same-sex marriages illegal.

But the star believes her nuptials have changed her for the better - even though she is struggling to remember she now has a wife.

She says, "My heart just feels a little bit different, softer and somehow more in love. I don't know how. But it just feels really romantic and lovely.

"I keep saying 'my girlfriend,' but I have to go to 'wife'."

DeGeneres Urges Voters To Save California's Gay Marriage Laws

24 September 2008 5:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

TV host Ellen DeGeneres has urged the people of California to support the fight to keep the U.S. state's gay marriage laws active.

The lesbian funnywoman spoke out against the Proposition 8 bill - a high-level state vote in the upcoming November elections to make same-sex marriages constitutionally illegal in California.

Gay marriages were legalised in the state in May and DeGeneres and partner Portia De Rossi married last month under the new law.

And the star believes the upcoming vote should be ignored, because it is "confusing".

She writes on her official blog, "There's a California Proposition on the ballot that's a little confusing. It's Proposition 8. It's called, "The California Marriage Protection Act" - but don't let the name fool you. It's not protecting anyone's marriage. Not yours. Not mine.

"The wording of Prop 8 is tricky. It's like if someone asked you, "You don't want dessert, right?" But you do want dessert so you say, "Yes," which really means you don't want dessert. And if you say, "No," which means you do want dessert - it sounds like you don't. Either way, you don't get what you want. See - confusing. Just like Prop. 8.

"So, in case I haven't made myself clear, I'm For gay marriage. And in order to protect that right - please Vote No on Proposition 8. And now that you're informed, spread the word. I'm begging you. I can't return the wedding gifts - I love my new toaster."

Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg have both donated $100,000 (GBP54,000) to gay rights activists who are campaigning against Proposition 8.

Newlyweds Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi turned down offers from George Michael and Justin Timberlake to sing at their summer wedding in favour of a little known singer.

The pop superstars both offered to perform, with Timberlake going so far as planning to pen a new song especially for the two brides.

But, when the couple chose to scale their wedding plans back to a more intimate family affair, the idea of inviting big name stars to perform in their garden seemed a little odd.

DeGeneres says, "We called and disinvited everyone. They totally understood."

Instead, she asked Joshua Radin to sing at the wedding: "He was fantastic and was so thrilled and honoured."

DeGeneres wed her girlfriend Portia De Rossi last month, and now the talkshow host is urging the 33-year-old American Idol presenter to sort out his personal life before it is too late.

Speaking on her Ellen DeGeneres show, she says, "You're going to wait too long and get in a rut being single. It's going to be hard to open up and share your life with somebody, because you have your way of doing things.

.You have to let go and be with someone. You're a great guy. You're funny, you're smart. You're getting old."

And when Seacrest named his ideal woman as Hollywood actress Eva Mendes, DeGeneres immediately offered to start matchmaking, saying: "Would you like me to set you up with her?"

DeGeneres Uninvited Guests When Wedding Became Too Big

10 September 2008 6:34 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Newlyweds Portia De Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres upset a host of celebrity pals by uninviting them to their summer nuptials.

DeGeneres has revealed the gay couple had originally planned to turn their big day into a star-studded affair, but the pair scaled back when word leaked about the ceremony.

The comedienne instructed wedding planner Mindy Weiss to alert friends the wedding would no longer be a big bash, and the couple instead wed at their home, surrounded only by family and close friends.

DeGeneres says, "We had 150, 200 people originally, we were gonna do a huge wedding and then at the last minute, we called her (Weiss) and said, 'Please call and uninvite everybody because we just can't do it; it's too stressful.'"

But the decision left some pals upset - because they thought they had been snubbed.

The comedienne adds, "We got calls from certain people thinking they were the only ones uninvited... They were offended."

DeGeneres insists she and her partner made the right decision: "We did the right thing - we only asked, like, 21 people."

Ronson Pledges To Wed Lohan By Christmas

Lindsay Lohan will be Mrs. Samantha Ronson by Christmas if the DJ has her way.

Ronson halted her set at a top Los Angeles nightclub on Tuesday to declare her love for the Mean Girls actress, insisting she will wed Lohan by the end of the year.

This will make them the second big-name lesbian couple to wed in 2008 - after Ellen DeGeneres exchanged vows with Portia De Rossi this summer.

Speaking from her mixing desk at the Chateau Marmont, she told clubbers, "By the end of this year, my love will be Mrs. Ronson," adding cryptically, "Tonight shows the power of a woman - to underestimate that is to underestimate the world."

Chateau Marmont regulars claim the venue has become a frequent Friday night hang-out for the inseparable lesbians.

Club performer Raymond Aymond says, "Samantha and Lindsay are the most in-love Hollywood couple I've ever seen. Every Friday night they come in here and do cheesy dancing."

Drescher Teams Up With Ex For Gay Marriage Campaign Gala

3 September 2008 7:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Fran Drescher is leading the charge to end opposition to same-sex marriages in California by co-hosting a cocktail party at her ex-husband's Los Angeles home.

The U.S. star and her ex, Peter Marc Jacobson, are teaming up to host a benefit for Equality California - the group fighting to defeat an upcoming ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California.

Gay couples, like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi, have been taking advantage of new marriage laws that permit same-sex nuptials by exchanging vows this summer - but the new regulations could be overturned in November if anti-gay marriage activists get their way.

Drescher tells Eonline.com, "I'm a gay icon... (and) I'm a political activist who believes in preserving the American dream which is tolerance of diversity and the separation of church and state. It's simply un-American not to be tolerant of different lifestyles. If you wanna live in a single-minded, religious-based country you're in the wrong place."

Guests at Wednesday night's fundraiser have paid at least $100 (GBP54) each to hang out with Drescher and her ex. The actress insists she and Jacobson are the best of friends.

She adds, "We have very similar beliefs in terms of ideology as well as theology."

DeGeneres Hopes To Inspire Equal Rights With De Rossi Wedding

Talk show queen Ellen DeGeneres hopes her marriage to actress Portia De Rossi will inspire generations to become more open-minded about same-sex unions.

The lesbian couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills, California home on Saturday after the state lifted its ban on gay marriage.

And the 50-year-old insists the pair's own marital obstacles could break down barriers for equal rights activists in the future.

DeGeneres says: "I feel like it is long overdue. And I think someday people will look back on this - like women not having the right to vote, and segregation and anything else that seems ridiculous - like we all don't have the same rights."

De Rossi Considers Changing Her Name After Marrying

20 August 2008 9:01 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Portia De Rossi is considering changing her name after marrying talk show host Ellen DeGeneres at the weekend.

The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at their Beverly Hills, California home on Saturday after the state lifted its ban on gay marriage.

Arrested Development star de Rossi plans to keep her maiden name for now - but may soon be tempted to take her new bride's second name.

She tells People magazine, "I may do it in the future, but I don't think I'm going to do it right now."

But talk show host and media magnate DeGeneres insists it would be far too expensive for her to switch to de Rossi: "If I changed my name to hers, then Telepicture (DeGeneres' productions company) would have to change a lot of signs."
