Blu-Ray Review: Give Johnny Depp, Michael Mann’s ‘Public Enemies’ Another Chance

15 December 2009 1:51 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – On paper, Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies” looked like it would be a clear contender for end-of-the-year consideration but it has been largely forgotten, only a few months after its release. The cold, dense film didn’t register strongly enough with critics or audiences and it looks like it could disappear without much fanfare. What I think is more likely is that Mann’s dark, complex film will slowly get the recognition it deserves on the home market and it starts with this Blu-Ray release.

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

Public Enemies” is an examination of the intersection of the end of the era of the bank robber and the beginning of the legend of the G-men. The former is represented by one of the “public enemies” of the day, John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), and the latter by the man assigned to catch the elusive mastermind, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). Dillinger stole »

Public Enemies (Two-Disc Special Edition) DVD Review

8 December 2009 9:49 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It’s no secret that I think Michael Mann is the greatest director of all-time, dead or otherwise. One can throw all the Scorsese, Kurosawa, Ford, or Spielberg they want and I’ll still conclude that Mann is better than all of them. His style is unparalleled and has influenced my own approach to the way I make films. Maybe it’s how cool he makes everyone appear in his movies, or maybe it’s how no one does action better than him. Mr. Mann just has a touch to his films that really speaks to me. I’m awed by how well and how different he’ll shoot his material and how he builds his characters for the actors.  While not every one his films has been masterworks (Ali and The Keep come to mind) he rarely misses. Public Enemies, I’m proud to say, falls into the latter category. »

Blu-ray Review: Public Enemies

8 December 2009 12:15 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I ended my theatrical review of Public Enemies with the following line: I am leaving room for this one to grow on me or slowly settle down to the middle, but one thing's for certain, it had my wheels spinning and may likely end up an all-time classic of mine a few years down the line. This is the approach I try to take to all films whether I like them out of the box or not, but this one in particular felt like a film that was either going to slowly attach itself or just die away quietly. My expectations, as with other Mann films such as Heat and Thief (unfortunately not Miami Vice), were that this one would improve upon repeated viewings and after watching Universal's Blu-ray release it does just that. As a matter of fact I no longer have any doubts as to this film's quality »

The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

DVD Review: Public Enemies

1 November 2009 4:41 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

“I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars and you. What else do you need to know?”

Public Enemies is Michael Mann’s first venture into true-life territory since 1999’s The Insider. He has long been a master of slick fictionalised crime – his CV is a roll call of criminal capers and cops. The first twenty minutes of Public Enemies is this familiar Mann – the man who made Heat, Collateral and Miami Vice is here you think. The screen, the very room filled with slick staccato sights and sounds. It is cool; it looks period but feels contemporary, fast paced; a jail break, a bank heist, bang, bang, rapid-fire images, bang, bang. A car crests a hill with the robbers on the running boards clutching hostages to them, pretty girls, big guns, devil-may-care men; Gangsters. It explodes out of the screen burning with the same white-hot intensity that Mann believes »

Public Enemies Review: Robbed of a Solid Script

1 July 2009 6:48 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was a charismatic criminal who lived for the moment, and whose lightning raids on financial institutions across Middle America made him a top law enforcement target. By robbing only banks and not everyday people, Dillinger became a bit of a folk hero to much of the downtrodden masses. For a while, Dillinger appeared both unstoppable and untouchable. In the event that the cops did manage to arrest him, the cool crook would still find a way to break out of jail pretty quickly. Dillinger's charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone, including the coat-check girl who eventually became the love of his life, Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard). While Jd's adventures thrilled many, J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) was not one of his fans. However, Hoover hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw's capture as a way to elevate his fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation. »

[Movie Review] Public Enemies

1 July 2009 1:32 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

In 1934, John Dillinger was famously shot dead coming out of a gangster movie.

The movie in question was a Clark Gable picture called Manhattan Madness. Perhaps sensing the obvious irony, director Michael Mann's vision of Dillinger resembles Gable's smooth gentlemanly rep. Handsome and persuasive, romantic even when he's violent.

Johnny Depp's Dillinger is a far cry from the way Lawrence Tierney or Warren Oates portrayed him in previous films about America's most notorious bank robber. This time he's lovesick and mostly troubled by unnecessary violence, behaving more like a prince charming than a dangerous criminal. Hence the many scenes of him spewing schmaltzy pick-up lines to Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard), the gal who had the "honor" of calling herself Dillinger's girl. Elsewhere, a Napoleonic J. Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup), wanting to push his Federal Bureau of Investigations out of infancy, assigns his super-agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) to lead the Dillinger manhunt. »

News Flash: New Trailer and Soundtrack for Channing Tatum's 'Public Enemies'

17 May 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | Channing Tatum Unwrapped | See recent Channing Tatum Unwrapped news »

I have a couple of quick updates for Channing Tatum's upcoming historical drama 'Public Enemies', which has already gotten a ton of Oscar buzz and seems to be on everyone's must-see list for this year.

I recently posted three new posters and two new TV spots for the film, and now I have soundtrack information and a new trailer (thanks to CTU reader Jane B. from Wisconsin) to share.

As far as the film's soundtrack is concerned, Decca Records has now announced that they will be releasing the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for 'Public Enemies' on June 30, 2009 with music composed by Elliot Goldenthal. They have not released the songs that will be included on the album, but I'll post more details when they become available.

Universal has also released a new trailer for the film that I hear is currently playing in theaters. The second »

Fresh Release: Dirk Brossé conducts Star Wars

16 April 2009 12:11 PM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

A couple of days ago Star Wars: A Musical Journey premiered and became an instant hit. This concert features some of John Williams best-known music slightly re-arranged for concert purposes, played against the colorful images of the Star Wars pictures. Here's my lightning quick interview with conductor Dirk Brossé who conducted several Elliot Goldenthal scores and held the baton on Hans Zimmer's only concert in Ghent. He talks about getting the commission, working with John Williams and the problem with click tracks:

To be honest, as far as film music is concerned, this was one of the most beautiful days in my life, when I got the phone call from John Williams' office if I was interested in conducting the Star Wars: A Musical Journey concert. The second question was "Would you like to come over?" I naturally wanted to go and spent three days there. »

New International 'Public Enemies' Trailer

9 April 2009 3:55 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Universal Pictures have debuted their new international trailer for Public Enemies, which you can watch by clicking the Trailer tab above.

Having seen the first trailer in the theater with Watchmen — and now looking at this slightly modified int. trailer — it's hard not to believe that director Michael Mann has a hit on his hands. First up, it has all the requisite elements for a great film: colorful characters; a terrific and true story; guts, guns and action; a wonderful A-list cast...and a director who knows how to meld story and atmosphere with the best of them. The story of outlaw John Dillinger — the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover's fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public — is iconic in the annals of American history.

Inside The Business: Temp Scores (Part 1)

25 March 2009 6:49 AM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

The temporary score (a collection of pre-existing music utilized during the editing) is a controversial creative aid which was first utalized by the editors to keep some rhythm to their works. Today the job of producing and editing temporary track is a whole job onto itself. In the following article you'll hear a lot more about this job from two of Hollywood's top temp editors: Scott Stambler is a frequent collaborator of Rob Reiner and served as a temp editor on such features as Forrest Gump, The Kingdom and most recently on Tropic Thunder. Mark "Vordo" Wlodarkiewicz does a variety of music editing jobs which naturally includes temp editing: his most recent credits include Eragon, The Simpsons Movie and yes, he worked on Tropic Thunder as well.

First the bad news: many composers criticize the temp track as a way to stop creativity. True, many directors and producers ofter force »

Top-10 Most Anticipated Scores of 2009

3 January 2009 4:45 AM, PST | MovieScore Magazine | See recent MovieScore Magazine news »

Upcoming Film Scores lists the ten most exciting, promising and anticipated film scores of 2009, according to its editor Mikael Carlsson who can't wait to hear what will come out musically of these projects:

1. Avatar (James Horner)

Director James Cameron and composer James Horner are of course best known for the multi-zillion-whatever-megahit Titanic, but they also gave us Aliens in 1986 which stands out as one of the most exciting nailbiter scores in sci-fi history. On that film, Cameron gave Horner a pretty hard time as judging from the composer interview on the special edition DVD, and basically what you hear in the film is the result of a composer writing under enormous pressure. On Avatar, the situation is the complete opposite. A luxury in film scoring today, the total time given to the scoring process on this film will probably exceed one year! Horner is currently working exclusively on this film, »
