"Star Trek 2" is coming for sure, and earlier this year, director J.J. Abrams said work on the script had already begun. The plan is to have the sequel to the 2009 hit movie "Star Trek" ready for a 2011 release.
In a recent interview with MTV, Zoe Saldana, one of the film's stars, said that pre-production on the anticipated follow-up may kick off in a year or so. We'll know soon enough whether that's the start date.
"... We'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year," she said. She also said she recently talked to J.J. Abrams, who said they are still working on the script at this stage. »

Like our friends over at First Showing, this little snippet of news/info kind of slipped past us over the Christmas break, but we thought it was worth sharing with you: In an interview with MTV last week, actress Zoe Saldana spoke about the movies she has upcoming in 2010, and one of the movies highlighted in its own segment was “A Star Trek Sequel.”
It was a kind of off-the-cuff remark when Saldana let loose the info that she believes that the Star Trek sequel (Star Trek 2?) will go into pre-production around this time next year. Here’s the quote from MTV by Saldana herself:
“I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we’ll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year. »

Hi, I'm Jim, reviewer of mainstream theatrical fare. Whenever I get the chance (i.e., no conflicts with paying work or family, etc.) I like to post the occasional movie reviews here at Twitch. I've yet to see some of the major award-magnets for the year ("Up In The Air", "The Hurt Locker"), but I did catch a number of really great movies this year, most of which happen to be genre entries. I make no apologies for this, as the following list contains some of the best films of their kinds. Dig in, fanboys!
1. Star Trek - What it may lack in traditional "Star Trek" social commentary, it makes up for, in spades, in sheer freshness and magnetism. While already being a "Trek" fan may help in terms of overall appreciation, the fact is that director J.J. Abrams has crafted a great movie - a positive case study in good, »

I don't think J.J. Abrams would want to work much faster than this outlined schedule by Zoe Saldana, his beautiful Star Trek star who spoke to MTV recently about a sequel. Trek was a blast in my opinion, but it was also a pretty accomplished film with a tight, efficient script. That's no accident, because those things don't happen by accident.
As a comparison, I offer Transformers, which went from a pretty entertaining first film to an absolute train wreck because there was no time to develop the story. It was two years between installments there, and Trek looks like it will wait three years before boldly going again. That gives Abrams and company time to get it right, a process that Saldana say is already underway.

Star Trek screenwriter Alex Kurtzman has mentioned previously that the script for the sequel will be finished later than originally scheduled, likely pushing the sequel to a 2012 release date. Actress Zoe Saldana, who plays Uhura in the J.J. Abrams remake, confirmed the schedule, telling MTV that pre-production would begin next year.
I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year.
Up next for Saldana is the heist flick Takers and the comic book adaptation of The Losers, about a group of CIA black ops agents out for revenge.

There's nothing better than a geek-friendly franchise that doesn't take fifteen years to get made. Christopher Nolan is amazing and all, but don't we all wish that he would learn how to make two movies at once so he can make another Batman sequel already? Same goes for Bryan Singer and the Superman franchise. It's fairly certain that while the first movie was divisive, the second would likely be a true epic. J.J. Abrams doesn't mess around like these guys. According to Star Trek star, Zoe Saldana, Abrams is on schedule to begin shooting the sequel to this summer's big hit next winter. Speaking to MTV, Zoe had this to say: "I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we'll probably be going into pre-production »

Christopher Nolan's Inception could be my most anticipated movie of next year, and thus far the marketing has been brilliantly mysterious. Perhaps taking a page out of J.J. Abrams' book, the second trailer for the movie has just hit the web and it's still giving us nothing more than cryptic little bits and pieces. Frustrating, perhaps... but I think for a lot of people Christopher Nolan's name offers all the reassurance we need. As we have heard before, the movie takes place "within the architecture of the mind", and this trailer shows buildings and city blocks re-adjusting, perhaps based on the power of thought alone. There's a little bit of a Dark City vibe going on here, although in this case I'm assuming that most of what we are seeing is actually inside someone's head. We also get our first look at Ellen Page in the movie, »

Star Trek has found itself at the top of one of Hollywood's least-desirable year-end lists, emerging as the most pirated film of 2009. With almost 11 million illegal downloads recorded, J.J. Abrams's epic narrowly edged Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (10.6 million) for the No. 1 slot, followed by RocknRolla (seriously), The Hangover and Twilight. Somewhat surprisingly, the infamously leaked X-Men Origins: Wolverine hovered in ninth place below even the turgid reporter drama State of Play. Among the lessons: You know newspapers are doomed when people won't even pay for movies about journalism. [Torrent Freak via Nyt] »

Not unsurprisingly, "Star Trek" topped the list of the most pirated movies of 2009 according to Torrent Freak. Bootlegs of J.J. Abrams' sci-fi epic pulled in 10.96 million downloads this year, easily beating last year's winner "The Dark Knight" with 7 million downloads.
Some expected blockbusters saw placings in the Top Ten like this year's "Harry Potter" and "Transformers" sequels, "The Hangover" and "Twilight". It was the odd ones out though that surprised.
Chief among them was third place winner "RocknRolla", Guy Ritchie's 2008 British gangster drama/comedy that scored a mere $25 million at the worldwide box-office. The film however has since found a strong cult following on DVD, especially outside the Us, and its 9.4 million downloads figure has surprised quite a few.
Less unusual but still surprising was Russell Crowe thriller "State of Play" at #8 with 7.4 million downloads. The film only did mediocre box-office ($87.8m globally) but the high download rate »

How much did people love J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek? So much that they felt too much ecstasy to leave their computers and see the movie again. However, thanks to the wonder of the Internet, they just pirated the shit out of it and made it 2009’s most pirated film of the year with almost 11 million downloads. THR reports that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was a close second, but down at number nine was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which at first seems surprising due to the leaked work print a month before the film came out. I would say that it was a matter of demand but Wolverine made $180 million at the box office, but RocknRolla came in third with almost 10 million downloads even thought it only made $26 million at the box office. What does this all mean? It means I need to get out of the speculation biz because I clearly have no clue. »

4 8 15 16 23 42. While the world counts down the days to the New Year, a smaller part of the world's population has been patiently counting down the days to something larger than 2010: the final season of Lost. Time travel. Religious undertones. Paradoxes. Destiny. An Island Spirit. All these things and more have come to the forefront of the Lost mythos. Now, it's time for Damon Lindelof, Jeffrey Lieber and of course J.J. Abrams to make good on five years of loyal viewing from the fans. Numerous rumors questions surround the season 6 finale. Is John Locke still Locke? What will be the final fate of war between Benjamin Linus (Michael Emerson) and Charles Widmore (Alan Dale)? Will the survivors of Oceanic 815 ever be able to find their way back to mainstream life or will they be destined to live out their last days on the Island? »

Opens: July 2nd 2010
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.
Analysis: Its been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan who started it as a household name with labels of a moodern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".
Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit cartoon series »

2009 was a great year for Star Trek, but maybe not such a great year for parent studio Paramount. The J.J. Abrams' reboot found its way onto the top spot of 2009's "most-pirated" list, according to The Hollywood Reporter. With almost 11 million illegal downloads, that placed Trek just a tad higher than the number two film on the list, Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
You can't count that 11 million as a loss, as that would assume everyone who downloaded it would've bought a ticket, but that's still an impressive (and damaging) number. The average ticket price for a movie in 2009 is $7.18 (source). If you were to apply that price to 11 million downloads, you'd be looking at a box office take in the neighborhood of $79 million dollars. That's huge.
The number three film on the list, Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla, grossed a middling $26 million in its theatrical run, but if »

So I would like to start this Top 10 list off with something I call the 5.. oh who am I kidding. Here are five films that, had I seen them, might have been in my Top 10 List for 2009.
1. Up in the Air – Had the chance to interview Reitman and due to family reasons was unable to do it. Also had a chance to see the film weeks in advance and couldn’t make it.
2. Fantastic Mr. Fox – this is a movie that I am sad I missed. Something special about this world that they have built, and something special about this all-star cast of actors. A truly special (-looking) film.
3. The Hurt Locker – I don’t know how many folks have said, “Watch this movie — it’s amazing!” Well, so far, I haven’t touched it. I have nothing against it, just matters of time and priority.
4. Up – I know, I know, »

I’ll be up front with you: the list you’re about to read wasn’t what I had in store for you. As I sat at my desk and prepared to crank out what would be another top ten list of 2009, I realized that I was utterly ill-equipped to do so. As many great films as I witnessed this year, I missed just as many that I’m sure I’d enjoy: A Serious Man. The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The Hurt Locker. The Brothers Bloom.
I know. Just thinking about it makes me sick. But I saw enough to be confident in saying that 2009 was an extremely good year for movies — from blockbusters to indie pictures, we’ve witnessed some great films and surprising debuts from unique filmmakers.
What follows isn’t a list of the “best” films of 2009, but instead is a list of the most surprising, excellent »

Here.s my list of the Top 10 Best Movies of 2009, from No. 10 to the best of the best! And there's also a fun Top 10 video made just for you!
10. .A Serious Man. . The Coen brothers play gods to Michael Stuhlbarg.s hapless character named Larry Gopnik in this gleaming dark comedy. The film is a meditative study on religion, family, and individuality. I adore the narrative style of the Coen brothers where they put the protagonist in incredible situations (.Fargo.), see »

The Story: "Atomic Robo: " by Brian Clevenger (W) an'd Scott Wegener (A) – Red 5 Comics
What It's About: Unveiled by Nikola Tesla in 1923, the automatic intelligence known as Atomic Robo receives full United States citizenship after completing a top-secret mission predating America's entry into World War II. After the war, Robo founds Tesladyne, a world-renowned think tank entrusted to stand against the kind of threats that personify speculative science fiction.
With a brilliant mind, near-invulnerable fists and a laser-sharp wit, Robo and his action scientists face down the impossible on behalf of all mankind.
Why It Works: "Atomic Robo" has the heart of a pulp and the head of a utopian sci-fi franchise, making it feel at home somewhere between J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot, Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" films and every Indiana Jones movie that doesn't involve crystal skulls.
Like Hellboy, Robo is an outsider who protects mankind »
