Review: “Hollywood, je t’aime” is a Gay French Film (Even if it’s Not)

28 October 2009 9:59 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It’s French film that just happens to be (mostly) in English and set in Los Angeles.

Well, not really. Hollywood, je t’aime was written and directed by an apparently American filmmaker, Jason Bushman.

But it sure feels like a French film. It’s not just that it tells the story of Jerome, a Parisian who finds himself unlucky in love and takes an impetuous trip to Los Angeles – a “vacation” that threatens to turn into a whole new life when he decides to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

It’s that the film has that loose, meandering feel of a French film. The camera is often hand-held, the plot is a series of random-seeming events, and the movie’s approach to sex is refreshingly casual.

It’s not just that the movie contains male nudity – that seems to be pretty much a requirement in gay indie cinema these days. »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Can you please help us get more details on Luke Macfarlane's involvement in a Canadian movie Iron Road? He plays a straight guy who falls in love with a woman who was disguised as a boy and has a total nude scene which is gorgeous and sexy. -- Bclee

A: Who is this, the publicist for Iron Road? You’re a smart one. By getting me to publish your email on AfterElton.com, you should sell at least a few thousand extra copies of the movie.

The Best Fall Gay TV Guide Ever!

24 August 2009 5:32 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Prepare to be dazzled!

As difficult as it is to believe given our astounding amounts of copy and shocking levels of professionalism, AfterElton.com is less than five years old.

Needless to say, the site has seen a lot of changes in these past few years – not the least of which is our bi-annual TV-viewing previews.

At the beginning, it pretty much consisted of our doing a furious Google search of the words “gay” and “TV” thirty minutes before making the article live.

These days? Well, now we have virtually every TV star or showrunner imaginable available at the touch of a button.

In other words, access, thy name is AfterElton.com! Hey, we even talked to Padma friggin’ Lakshmi (who, for the record, is even more beautiful in person than she is on TV – we’re just sayin’).

And since we’ve watched preview copies of most of the new shows, »

Exclusive: Scott Evans' First Interview

15 June 2009 4:33 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It's not hard to think of famous actors who happen to be siblings. There are the Baldwin brothers, of course, as well as the Wayans brothers. There is Matt Dillon and Kevin Dillon, and Luke Wilson and Owen Wilson.

Then there is Chris Evans and Scott Evans.

Wait — Scott who?

Perhaps you're not familiar with that last actor just yet, but with any luck, you will be soon. Scott Evans currently plays Officer Oliver Fish on One Life to Live, a character about to embark on a relationship with another man. If you're especially sharp-eyed, you might have spotted Evans on a recent episode of Fringe where his character died in a rather horrible fashion.

Oh, Evans also happens to be the younger brother of Chris Evans of Fantastic Four fame.

With his new storyline on Oltl set to unfold over the next couple of weeks, now seemed a good »

News: No, Dantes Cove Season 4 has not started shooting yet...

5 June 2009 9:51 AM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Since a bunch of you have asked, no, Series 4 of Dante's Cove has not started shooting yet. I checked. It is still in development for a Fall shoot. It's still a money-maker for Regent/here! so there's little doubt that cameras will roll on the naked and nearly naked flesh of all the denizens of DC sometime this year.

Dantes isn't one of my favorite shows. I applaud every year that another season gets produced. I truly love the fact that queer genre is being made, year in and year out. Like with the The Lair, it's awesome that there's an audience for the supernatural shenanigans on both shows. I just wish both shows were... better. Better written, better acted, better produced. I want our stuff to be great, regardless of the gayness of it. I've never been convinced that Dantes or The Lair does that.

The Ladies' Choice Hot 50 Results

21 May 2009 10:40 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

We may be a predominantly gay male entertainment site, but we always try to look out for the ladies here at AfterElton.com. We felt bad that we had to ask our female readers to sit out the Hot 100 voting last month (for that list we wanted a fair representation of whom gay men find attractive), so to make up for it we ran a special poll just for the ladies in last week's Best.Gay.Week.Ever!  We wanted to hear from our female readers about which gay men they find hot.

Call it The Ladies' Choice Hot 50. You'll find the results after the break!

If there's one thing women and gay men can agree on it seems to be Neil Patrick Harris, who headlines both the regular Hot 100 and this list. After some further Hot 100 similarities near the top (John Barrowman, Luke MacFarlane, etc.) things start to diverge considerably. »

Hope, Pride and Courage at GLAAD Awards

20 May 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Hope, pride and courage were the dominant themes at the 20th Annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamatio (GLAAD) Media Awards, which unraveled with a burst of energy in San Francisco this month. Chatfest darling Chelsea Handler played hostess at the well-attended ceremony, which honored the best in television and journalism. But others turned heads as well. Everybody from the city's mayor, Gavin Newsom, to attendees like finance queen Suze Orman, actors Jason Lewis, Robert Gant, Wilson Cruz and others, delivered spirited commentaries on the advances of Lgbt civil rights over the past year. Meanwhile, actor Chad Allen and Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black nabbed significant honors for their work. It was the third and final GLAAD Awards event this season -- previous awards were handed out in New York and Los Angeles last month -- and it was met... »

The 2009 AfterElton Hot 100

10 May 2009 9:48 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

After triumphing for two years in a row, Jake Gyllenhaal is not the winner of our third annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 poll (see the results for 2007 here and 2008 here). So which out man did take the top spot? If you’re the kind of person who always burns their mouth biting into that piping hot chocolate chip cookie, you can just cheat and go here to learn who came in first place.

Here at AfterElton.com, we’re thrilled to announce an out gay man topped this year’s list – especially this particular man as most of us voted for him as well. In fact, out gay men snagged nearly 20% of the spots, including the top three. To be sure, we’ve nothing against our straight male crushes, but it says something great about 2009 that there are so many out men to choose from.

AfterElton Hot 100 Sneak Peek: Chad Allen

29 April 2009 12:58 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Every day until the results are announced for the 2009 AfterElton.com Hot 100 poll we're leaking beefcake at a steady rate of a hunk a day (two slipped out on Monday, but we've adjusted the stream).

Today's fan-fave is out actor Chad Allen, who has transitioned from child star (Our House) to teen dream (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman) to out actor and bona fide gay role model (Save Me, General Hospital: Night Shift, the Donald Strachey Mystery series). All this, and he still finds the time to promote Arbor Day:

Oh, and he's currently auctioning off his tidy whiteys for charity. Now that's putting your money where your mouth ... would ... like to ... be ...? (sigh)

To find out where Allen placed on this year's list, you'll have to come back for the results. But for now, enjoy this assortment of pictures...

Why "As the World Turns" deserves the GLAAD award

7 April 2009 6:27 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

(Getty Images/Stephen Lovekin)

Two weeks ago, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) named CBS’ daytime soap opera As the World Turns Outstanding Daily Drama for their storyline centered on gay teens Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer. This was the second year in a row that Atwt won the award.

It was also the second year in a row that Tom O’Neil, who writes the Gold Derby blog for the Los Angeles Times, decried GLAAD’s bestowing the honor on the show; last year he also called on the media watchdog group to rescind the same award. This year he was joined by Nelson Branco of The Suds Report in condemning both GLAAD and As the World Turns.

Said O’Neil in a post titled “GLAAD continues to reward bias against gays”:

Chatting With … Sri Rao

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Sri Rao, the former head writer of last year’s best soap opera on either daytime or nighttime television, General Hospital: Night Shift. In addition to discussing his work on that gay-inclusive, critically acclaimed show, Rao also shared his thoughts on the depiction of gay characters in the genre, who should write gay characters, how As the World Turns handled the Luke and Noah storyline, as well as news about a new project very close to his heart.

[While very interesting and worthwhile, this interview is five pages long. To skip directly to this week's In My Humble Opinion, Gool Newsbeat and Scoops And Spoilers click here.]

Sri Rao

AfterElton.com: You were the head writer for General Hospital: Night Shift. Had you written for soaps before that?

Sri Rao: No, this was my first foray into the soap opera genre. I had been watching General Hospital for my entire life. I’m a long-time fan of the show so I was very familiar with it. »

First Trailer for Battle For Terra

18 February 2009 8:13 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Moviefone has debuted the trailer for Aristomenis TsirbasBattle for Terra (previously entitled Terra), a sci-fi CG animated film that has been completed and screened in several festival since 2007 but its getting a wide theatrical release this year courtesy of Lions Gate. For an independently produce film, the visual quality looks impressive.  Its quite refreshing to see a serious approach rather than the usual comedic tone we often see in conventional animated films. The voice cast reads like a who’s who list of actors/actress which include Evan Rachel Wood, Brian Cox, Luke Wilson, David Cross, Justin Long, Amanda Peet, Dennis Quaid, Chris Evans, James Garner, Rosanna Arquette, Chad Allen and more.

Mala (Evan Rachel Wood) is a precocious girl living on the beautiful planet Terra, a place where peace and tolerance are celebrated. However, the last inhabitants of Earth have exhausted the resources of their planet and are »

Trailer for Animated 'Battle for Terra'

18 February 2009 12:05 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I didn't remember ever hearing anything about a movie called Battle for Terra, but in a quick search it looks like way back in March of 2007 I posted a casting note when the film was simply named Terra and didn't have a major distributer. Today Moviefone announced the first trailer for CG-animated film and boy does it carry a large voice cast including the likes of Evan Rachel Wood, Brian Cox, Luke Wilson, David Cross, Justin Long, Amanda Peet, Dennis Quaid, James Garner, Chris Evans, Rosanna Arquette and Chad Allen. Unfortunately the director, Aristomenis Tsirbas, is someone I have never heard of, but apparently he was a digital artist on the first Hellboy and even Titanic and he wrote and directed an animated short based on the Terra idea back in 2003. The film centers on a peaceful alien planet that faces annihilation, as the homeless remainder of the human race sets its eyes on Terra. »

Degrassi: The Next Generation has a long history of prominent gay characters and this season is no exception. Earlier this year we met Riley Stavros, a teenager struggling with his sexuality, unable to accept that he is gay. With an episode featuring Riley set to air this week on The N, we decided to chat via e-mail with Argiris Karras, who plays the troubled young man, to get his thoughts on his role.

Argiris Karras

AfterElton.com: Tell us something about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun? What kind of music do you listen to?

Argiris Karras: I'm 19 years old and I was born in Toronto, Ontario, one of the greatest cities around!

For fun I often chill with my friends and do a whole bunch of random things such as play soccer and video games, watch movies and listen to music. »

New Kid Jonathan Knight outed by "National Enquirer"

5 February 2009 5:13 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

File this under "Gossip" for now, obviously.

The venerable National Enquirer is running a tell-all (with photos) from the alleged ex-boyfriend of New Kids on the Block frontman Jonathan Knight. Boyculture has the details on Kyle Wilker, the Brazilian model who met the singer on Fire Island and dated him for 18 months before the romance fizzled and he was driven into the arms of the Enquirer for support.

Interestingly, the Enquirer was also behind the outing of Chad Allen. And Knight was the New Kid that all the girls (including fellow mall-star Tiffany) had the crushes on.

Knight, then and now

It's a sad, sad day for anyone who was once a 12-year-old girl in a Bum Equipment sweatshirt and ratted bangs.  We're reserving judgment until Knight addresses the claims, but we're breaking our Z Cavariccis out of cold storage just in case!

In The Spotlight — Emmerdale

This week we bid a fond farewell to Emmerdale’s Paul Lambert (out actor Matthew Bose) and Jonny Foster (Richard Grieve), by taking a look back at their relationship as they exit the series for a new life in Australia – oh, yeah, and to give their troubled marriage a second (or is it third?) chance. It’s been a long hard road for this couple that found their love tested time and again.

Matthew Bose (left) and Richard Grieve

During Paul’s years living in Emmerdale, he endured a series of unsuccessful relationships and tumultuous events including the night he rescued his neighbor Grayson Sinclair (Christopher Villiers) during an assault (and somehow managing to learn of Grayson’s bisexuality in the process0. Grayson’s wife, Perdy (who is aware of her husband’s bisexuality) instantly concluded Paul and Grayson were secretly lovers, but once Paul convinced »
