Kaleidoscope 2009: Important Movie Events (Part 2/4)

5 hours ago | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

With summer being the much anticipated months for the film biz, more shocking stories come into sight. The leak of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" unfinished version, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" experiencing on-set mishap, and the chopping off of La Toya Jackson's scene from "Bruno" were some of the affairs that juiced up this year's fairly modest summer months.

April

Though the story came to public attention on April 1, it wasn't one of the April Fool's jokes. One month prior to the theatrical release of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", its workprint version was leaked out online and made available for download on several bittorrent sites, prompting a more than 75,000 download ever since. Preventing further illegal act on the unfinished film, 20th Century Fox was quick to issue a statement, and vowed to prosecute the source of the initial leak and any subsequent postings.

What are the best and worst movie accents of the decade?

21 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Yesterday, NPR printed an article about the best and worst movie accents of the decade, asking readers to submit their votes on what actor should nab the award in both categories. As the EW writer who a few years ago helmed our Worst Movie Accents gallery, I decided to look at their choices. (And, unfortunately, since film's all-time worst movie accent -- Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves -- was brought to screens in 1991, it is not eligible for this award.) As far as the best accents go, NPR offers up four: Morgan Freeman in Invictus, Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean, »

By Steve Pond

It could be one of the most awesome moments ever on an Academy Awards telecast, though the Academy and the show’s producers might not be inclined to agree.

Picture this: Some star (let’s say Seth Rogen, to get those twentysomething viewers) introduces the next nominated song. The lights illuminate Sacha Baron Cohen, clad in full regalia as the character of gay fashion reporter Bruno.

“I’ve written a song that I hope is going to bring za vorld together,” he sings … and then, one-by-one, he’s joined by the cast of pop music superstars »

First Behind the Scenes Look at Dinner for Shmucks with Paul Rudd and Steve Carell

17 December 2009 2:10 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

For some reason, we haven't heard much about the upcoming Dinner for Shmucks starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, so this bit of news comes as a pleasant surprise. The film is a remake of the French comedy Le dîner de cons (which has a not-so-nice title when translated), and will be directed by Jay Roach (Austin Powers, Meet the Parents). The last we reported on Shmucks was in 2007, with Sacha Baron Cohen attached to star. Obviously, those plans fell through, but I honestly think it's for the better. Finally, we're going to get a chance to see Rudd and Carell together again after The 40 Year Old Virgin and Anchorman. The cast also features Zach Galifianakis and Ron Livingston. MTV has a short clip featuring the pair chatting about the film, check it out after the break --- along with a look at the film's plot. According to Wikipedia, »

16 December 2009 11:10 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Almost everybody in Springfield came for a pose on "The Simpsons" 20th anniversary poster. Brought to attention by EW, the art is like a spot-the-character feature that boasts all the primary and secondary characters found in the last two decades. This includes the monsters, the ghosts, the aliens and the animals.

Entering the 21st year, "Simpsons" becomes the longest-running television show. "Gunsmoke" previously invaded CBS screen for 20 years before resolving in 1975. In celebration of the monumental season, Fox has arranged a special on January 10 that includes a Simpsons documentary and "The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: in 3-D! on Ice!"

Guest voices to be expected in the 2010 season are Daniel Radcliffe and Sacha Baron Cohen. The former will be voicing a kid vampire named Edmund in the annual "Treehouse of Horror Xxi" episode. Lisa befriends Edmund but their fathers, Homer and Dracula, are against the relationship. Meanwhile, Cohen voices an Israeli »

Former model and TV presenter to follow Iranian president in giving alternative to Queen's Christmas Day broadcast

Acid attack survivor Katie Piper will deliver this year's alternative Christmas message on Channel 4.

Piper, who has had more than a year of reconstructive surgery after she had sulphuric acid thrown in her face by an ex-boyfriend, will deliver a message of "hope and optimism", said the broadcaster.

The traditional alternative to the Queen's Christmas Day broadcast is now in its 17th year, and has previously been delivered by speakers including Brigitte Bardot, Ali G, Marge Simpson and the parents of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

Channel 4 caused controversy last year when the alternative message was delivered by the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Piper, whose career as a model and TV presenter was destroyed by the attack, appeared on Katie: My Beautiful Face, part of Channel 4's documentary series Cutting Edge, in October. »

Palestinian Sues Baron Cohen For $110 Million

10 December 2009 12:21 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

In the latest lawsuit filed against Borat/Bruno creator Sacha Baron Cohen, a Palestinian shopkeeper is claiming that he was falsely portrayed as a terrorist in Bruno, harming his reputation and business. The $110-million lawsuit, which also names David Letterman and others, was filed in District of Columbia federal court last week by Ayman Abu Aita, who describes himself as a Christian and a "peace-loving person who abhors violence," the Associated Press reported on Wednesday. In an interview with Letterman, Baron Cohen said that he set up the meeting with Abu Aita in the West Bank at a "secret location" chosen by Abu Aita. The lawsuit claims, however, that Baron Cohen selected the location for the interview -- a hotel on the West Bank under Israeli military control. Perhaps most significantly, the shopkeeper claims he never signed a release. »
