So its been awhile since we have done an animated top ten or favorites list, in fact I think we have only done one since we have been in existence. Throughout cinematic history there has been many animated films from so many walks of life harping on different genres and different tones from children’s tales to more adult tastes. I have decided to take a look at what I consider the top 9 animated films of all time. I think it is safe to say that Walt Disney/Pixar are the standard and have been the standard for animation for sometime. However films like 9, Ponyo and other international forms of animation like Waltz With Bashir, are quickly hitting the mainstream and capturing the attention of moviegoers everywhere. New Media and Social Media are helping these lesser animated jaunts get noticed by many more people also its becoming more increasingly favored in film festivals like Sundance. »

Chicago – Seventy years ago, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released a haunting animated short named “Peace On Earth.” Director Hugh Harman set his story in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited only by animals, who have rebuilt a society dedicated to peace and nonviolence. Mankind ultimately brought about their own extinction by forging never-ending wars.
With tough subject matter and a cautionary message, this groundbreaking cartoon proved that the medium of animation could be used for more than lightweight escapism aimed at children. In 2005, UCLA student Shane Acker made a thesis film that resembled Harman’s short, in terms of its setting and themes. Instead of animals emerging from the wreckage of a bombed-out wasteland, there were odd mechanical creatures with burlap skin and camera irises for eyes. This wordless, visually arresting short ended up snagging an Oscar nod.

Part 2: From Andrew Sachs to Harry Potter
Andrew Sachs Sent the Beeb into cautious compliance meltdown
If Manuel had bothered to pick up his phone, Ross and Brand wouldn't have been tempted to leave their naughty messages, the Daily Mail wouldn't have been able to work itself up into a hypocritical moralistic lather, thousands of people who'd never heard the original show wouldn't have rung in to complain, Russell Brand would still have his Radio 2 show instead of Alan bleedin' Carr, and the BBC wouldn't get all jumpy every time Frankie Boyle made jokes about the Queen's fanny. Steve Jobs Killed the album with his zero-attention-span 'apps'
It was supposed to be so easy. Get your CDs, rip them in to iTunes, put them on your iPod. Then, whenever a latent desire to listen to Reo Speedwagon arose you could sate it right away. »

Basically, it’s like “Spider-Man”, but instead of web shooters and superpowers, our hero has an old car that can fly. That’s pretty much the plot of the Timur Bekmambetov-produced movie “Black Lightning”. A second, Russian trailer for the film has appeared online, and it introduces the movie’s romantic elements — in short, the blonde is Mary Jane, and the hero is Peter Parker, and the mean looking Russian guy who kidnaps Russian Mj is the Green Goblin. They even end the movie with a duel (using flying cars!) in the skies over Russia at night, with Russian Mj’s life at stake. Plus, our hero has a suave, rich buddy who has everything our hero wants, but can’t have, being that he’s poor and such. And is that my imagination or did they also throw in a scene where our hero rescues someone from a burning building — with his car? »

The first trailer of Black Lightning (Чёрная Молния, Chjornaja Molnija) was "male", action-oriented, while the second one is more dedicated to female audience and shows relationships of main heroes: "Black Lightning" Dima (Dmitriy), Nastya (Anastasia), Dima's beloved, and antagonist Maxim, who also loves her.
Translation:
Dima: In this world nobody owes nobody nothing. But I'll be saving this world, because it has ... you.
Timur Bekmambetov presents...
Maxim: By the way, I forgot to introduce you... Dmitriy. Mmm... My driver.
Nastya: Hello, driver.
Dima: When I'll get the car, I'll invite you to a date. Would you go?
Nastya: Listen, let's go out of here.
Dima: But dessert?
Nastya: This is dessert.
Dima: Woo-hoo!
Maxim: Lure a waitress and take her for a drive on a tram. Nastya is mine. Did you get it?
Dima: Ok, Max. Clam up.
Maxim's father: Beautiful girl, but she sits down in the car of other one. »

Another movie produced by Timur Bekmambetov for Russian audience after Black Lightning is called Щастье that means Happiness (the word is spelled with mistake intentionally as one of hero's pupils write this way, instead of Щастье it should be Счастье, but both spellings sound the same). Transliteration is hard since there's no mild sign in latin script, so i replace mild sign with apostrophe: Shchast'e.
The movie is directed by Leo Gabriadze and stars Konstantin Khabensky. The current date of release is 29th April, 2009. Synopsis is not yet published so I'll try to make it on my own:
Single school teacher (Khabensky) meets cute woman on vacation and falls in love with her. But there's one problem: he lives in provincial town, and she lives in Moscow. So he decides to move to her. But woman director of the school opposes it and remembers that some time ago he had »

End-of-the-world movie 2012 has broken box office records for a foreign release in Russia.
Director Roland Emmerich’s disaster movie has taken $30 million (GBP18.75 million) in just two weeks. The film took $12 million (GBP7.5 million) on its first weekend on release, according to Sony figures.
Daily Variety reports only Timur Bekmambetov’s Night Watch sequel, Day Watch, has scored similar box office success in its first two weeks on release - the homegrown Russian film made almost $32 million (GBP20 million) at the Russian box office in the same time frame in 2006. »

“Babylon 5” creator and noted comic scribe J. Michael Straczynski said his “Silver Surfer” script is in limbo at Fox thanks to the lukewarm response received by “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”
“What happened was when ‘FF2’ didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a ‘Silver Surfer’ movie,” noted Straczynski in an interview with Collider during last weekend’s “Ninja Assassin” press junket. “The script that I wrote picked up right where ‘FF2’ left off. So if they do a ‘Silver Surfer’ film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.”
Straczynski added, “It was definitely adult fare. I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing.”
Last month, actor Doug Jones (“Hellboy”) expressed his desire to reprise his role as the Silver Surfer even though the »

Though films with substance can be the most memorable, now and then a decent movie that invites you to check your brain at the door can be rewarding. The problem is those types of films have to be somewhat decent and they are getting pretty rare nowadays. The last action film I saw that asked me to throw logic out the window and was still entertaining was Timur Bekmambetov's “Wanted' and since then hyper-kinetic films of the genre have got dumber and dumber. 'Ninja Assassin' is no exception. It's actually one of those movies you want to succeed, because its tough to remember when was the last time we got a decent ninja flick which is a poorly developed genre. I never though I'd write this, but 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' comes to mind and I'm talking the recent CGI version, not men in ridiculous Muppet suits. »

At this weekend’s press junket for Ninja Assassin, I participated in a roundtable interview with screenwriters J. Michael Straczynski and Matthew Sand. While some screenwriters are lucky to have one project in developement, these two have tons. In fact, the list of projects they’re working on or have been on is rather impressive. Here’s some of them: Brothers in Arms, Red Star, Forbidden Planet, Lensmen, Silver Surfer, Wwz, and Shattered Union.
While we didn’t get to spend a lot of time on any one project, what we did get was updates on all of them. So if you’re curious what’s up with any of these movies, hit the jump to read what they had to say.
And if you’d like to know about Ninja Assassin, here’s a bunch of movie clips.
Q: How does the economy affect your upcoming projects?

Those looking to get a glimpse at next year’s NBC Thursday primetime lineup-inspired hybrid film are in luck as 20th Century Fox has release the first trailer for the upcoming Steve Carell and Tina Fey romantic, action, comedy film Date Night.
This marks the first film by director Shawn Levy since his box office hits Night at the Museum and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian raked in over $1 Billion. Not only does Levy have a new film, but also a script written by the talented Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) with revisions by Josh Klausner (Shrek The Third), Simon Kinberg (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Aline Bros McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada). (You may remember the names Simon Kinberg and Aline Brosh McKenna as they are the writing team to sell a $2 million film pitch to Paramount with J.J. Abrams.)

With budgets on the rise and total investments for studio pictures creeping toward the half a billion dollar mark, Hollywood needs a sure thing. So we hear terms like, “built-in audience” or “high-concept” or “ancillary revenues.” The summer movie schedule becomes a long list of sequels, prequels and remakes in the studios’ quest to recoup their investments. The success of the Transformer franchise has them scrambling. Cartoons from the 80’s are now the hot property. The studios are scouring the countryside for the next Transformers. I’m hearing names that I haven’t heard since I was eight, He-man, Thundercats, Go-Bots, Silverhawks and the Mighty Orbots. But one of the most popular cartoons from the 80’s is still out there, Voltron.
I remember the years 1984-1986 fondly as “the Voltron years.” I lived, breathed, ate and slept Voltron. I believe I was 10 when I discovered the company that owns Voltron, »

A couple of years ago, we saw a flood of studios picking up the rights to live action remakes of popular anime films and series. Fast-forward to today, and most of these are still stuck in development hell, perhaps stalled by the massive failure that was Dragonball Evolution. While I wouldn't be surprised if some of these projects never actually reach completion, at least a couple of them are still showing signs of life, with the Akira adaptation recently getting a new team of writers [1], and now Dreamworks setting a new scribe for their 3-D live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell. Back when the project was first announced [2], the writer who had been assigned to craft the script was Jamie Moss, whose only previous credit was the Keanu Reeves crime thriller Street Kings. Now Variety [3] is reporting that the torch has been passed to Laeta Kalogridis, with no »

Over the last few years, animated family movies have begun to embrace increasingly adult themes and storylines. Led by Pixar, they began by including more grown-up jokes in movies aimed at children, attempting to increase box office figures by making movies that parents could get some enjoyment out of alongside their kids.
Then last year, Pixar picked it up a level with Wall-e. Dealing with themes of loneliness and gluttony, and taking a look at the way mankind has treated this planet, Adults arguably enjoyed it more than the younger audience. Then this years Up dealt with missed love and lost youth in a poignant story of an Septuagenarian making one last journey. Now, Shane Acker’s 9 has come along to further the trend of using animated film to explore adult ideas.
When i first read about 9, i felt like i should know the director. After all, when a director »

Being one of only a handful of Japanese anime feature films I have seen (and one of even fewer that I even halfway liked), Ghost In The Shell is a brilliant film. Under the direction of Mamoru Oshii, it features stunning visuals and a complex narrative that, unlike a lot of anime, doesn’t lose you halfway through if you aren’t taking notes. So, it pains me to hear that DreamWorks is moving forward with their proposed, live action remake.
Variety is reporting the studio has brought in Laeta Kalogridis to adapt the animated film into a live-action, 3-D feature. It was announced back in April of 2008 that DreamWorks had picked up the rights to the property, and Jamie Moss had been brought in to pen the screenplay. There is no word what happened with Moss’ involvement on the project or how far into the screenwriting of the film he got. »
