There will be no recession in record stores over the holidays. In fact, with major releases from some of the biggest names in music slated to hit stores over the next six weeks, this shopping season is packed with one of the biggest bumper crop of anticipated releases in years.

Unlike past years, when hyped albums by Madonna, Eminem, U2 and other megastars were the focus of shoppers' action, this year's offerings span a wide variety of new stars (the "American Idol" triumvirate of Kris Allen, Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta), reissues by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, a greatest-hits collection from Britney Spears and highly anticipated albums from Rihanna, 50 Cent and Shakira. Kevin Spacey And Mos Def To Star In 'Buskers' Adaptation?

9 November 2009 9:49 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Singer and music producer Jeymes Samuel is preparing to direct a film adaptation of “Buskers”—a graphic novel he co-wrote with Sean Michael Wilson and artist Michiru Morikawa.

Kevin Spacey, Damon Albarn, Ian Brown and Mos Def are signed to star in the “Buskers” movie, Samuel told HeyUGuys, with the film expected to begin shooting in December. “Inglourious Basterds” producer Pilar Savone is also onboard and the London-based musical collective The BulliTTs will provide the soundtrack.

Released earlier this year by Insomnia Publications, the graphic novel follows a man who loses his high paying job as a banker and is forced to reevaluate his life as he falls into the underbelly of London’s busker community. "Buskers" are entertainers who perform in public for tips.

Samuel—who is perhaps best known for his single “When It Rains”—said the female lead has not yet been cast. The official “Buskers” website is already online. »

Comics to screen: Latest titles heading to film, TV, iTunes and iPhone

6 November 2009 8:43 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Sin City producer Stephen L'Heureux's Solipsist Films has acquired the rights to Ed Laroche's graphic novel Almighty.

According to Mania, Black Hawk Down screenwriter Ken Nolan is attached to write the script and potential directors are being approached.

Created, written and drawn by Laroche, Almighty takes place in 2098 and follows a female motorcycling mercenary called Fale, who is hired to rescue a girl and bring her home across a third world America - "a fractured landscape of segregated zones driven by neo-tribalism."

Laroche said: "At its heart Almighty is a pursuit story. As the story unfolds there are other things that are attached to it but at the core of it, a girl has been kidnapped and someone has hired a killer to find her and bring her home." The official website for Almighty is here.

Mania adds that Solipsist has also picked up screen rights on two other titles. »

"Just chillin'" with Dame Dash may have just spawned a rap supergroup project. On Wednesday, at Dash's new facility (art gallery, TV studio, music studio and more), DD172, critically acclaimed underground lyricist Curren$y told MTV News that he, Jay Electronica and Mos Def have combined forces to start recording an entire album together.

"That's ridiculous!" Curren$y said. "Jay Electronica is from my city, he's from New Orleans. I never met homie until I stepped foot in this building. He came here to meet Mos. And Mos, I had only known him for 24 hours prior to that. But genuine people could recognize [each other], it was like, 'Let's go.' "

Curren$y said Mos came up with the name of "Center Edge Territory" for the trio. When asked exactly what the moniker means, »

Weezer Visits The Newsroom And Rivers Gives Me Shivers

4 November 2009 1:32 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

I spent Monday afternoon in the presence of a guy who has informed not only my musical history but also my overall world view. I sat down with Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo to talk about his band's new album Raditude, his current mental state (he's pretty happy) and his recent collaborations with Katy Perry and Adam Lambert. Cuomo was his usual genial and thoughtful self, and he was totally game to talk about everything — including the Weezer Snuggie.

I've actually interviewed Cuomo a lot, but this was the first time we were in the same room together, and it was sort of a surreal experience. His band's development and evolution has basically mirrored my life as a music fan, a lifestyle that has obviously informed my current career choice. Weezer's self-titled debut came out in the middle of 1994. I was in the sixth grade and still didn't really have a »

Dame Dash: 'I Don't Have Beef' With Beanie Sigel, Jay-z

Dame Dash

Dame Dash just laughs off stories about how he is supposedly in dire straits financially. He gets so much of a kick out of it that he doesn't rush to defend himself against the rumors. These days, Dame is back where he started, making music independently along with brokering art and producing television.

Dash has a complex in lower Manhattan, DD172, where he has two music studios and an art gallery, and also publishes a magazine and maintains CreativeControl.tv. Mos Def has dubbed the building the "24/7 karate school" because of all of the artists that come through and work together, including Mos, the Black Keys, Jay Electronica, Jim Jones, the RZA, Raekwon the Chef and producer Ski (Reasonable Doubt) to name a few.

Jeymes Samuel Talks Kevin Spacey’s Next Film and Gorillaz The Movie

3 November 2009 1:58 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

One of the nicest things about the McM Expo is how willing people are to talk to convention-goers. Outside of the panels and signings are comic creators and film makers who will quite happily have a conversation with anyone who approaches them.

HeyUGuys managed to snag some time with Jeymes Samuel, who has produced albums for The Gorillaz, Ben Hudson and KT Tunstall. His current project is Buskers, a film version of the comic that he wrote with graphic-novelist Sean Michael Wilson.

The film, which begins shooting in December stars Kevin Spacey, Damon Albarn, Ian Brown and Mos Def. It tells the story of Timothy Book, a former banker who falls on hard times, and ends up spending an increasing amount of time involved with London’s busking scene.

The film is being produced by Pilar Savone, associate producer on Inglorious Basterds, and will feature a soundtrack by London-based musical collective The BulliTTs. »

Is it too late to start training for the New York Marathon? (Answer: Yes, as it's Sunday.) Is this weekend when we roll the clocks back? (Yes, so enjoy an extra hour of sleep before running the marathon.) What's going to be the most popular costume for Halloween? (We've already seen more Sookie Stackhouses than we care to count.) But most importantly: What might you have missed this week here on the Newsroom blog? Lucky for you,

we have whole cornucopia of answers ready and waiting for your clicking pleasure.

After unveiling his debut-album cover earlier this week — which depicts a look he called "deliberately campy" — Adam Lambert made an appearance on "On Air with Ryan Seacrest" to present his first single, "For Your Entertainment," and chat with the host.

"I am so excited, I popped right out of bed," he said. "Turn it up really loud, guys! I know it's really early, but turn it up!" Seacrest then hit play. "For Your Entertainment" is a synth-heavy pop club tune or, as Lambert put it, "dance music with a glam rock shuffle beat." There are echoes of Lady Gaga, countless '80s tunes and, during the chorus, "Fame." He doesn't show off his vocal range until the end, when »

Eminem, Mos Def And Black Thought: Who Ruled The Cypher?

28 October 2009 9:50 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

By Steven Roberts

The Bet Awards aired last night, and there were plenty of memorable moments. Jay-z and Young Jeezy opened the show with a performance of "As Real as it Gets," Hov took home the Mvp of the Year Award and Ice Cube was honored with the "I Am Hip-Hop" lifetime achievement award for "knockin' n----s out the box, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly." There were also performances from Snoop, Gucci Mane — excuse me, Gucci! — and the recently-reunited Goodie Mob.

But the main segments everyone is talking about this morning are the three cyphers that took place during the show, most notably the cypher featuring Mos Def, Black Thought of the Roots and Eminem. Half of the MTV Newsroom is still debating who came the hardest.

Mos Def started off the cypher introducing the three MCs and proclaiming that since they were in his hometown, "I gotta do this for Brooklyn. »

Dash's BlakRoc Disses Black Rock

20 October 2009 2:38 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

How can you call something “BlakRoc” when the black folks on the project only rap and the rockers are all white? BlakRoc is the name of Damon Dash’s upcoming project, a collaboration between white rockers The Black Keys and rappers such as Mos Def, Q-Tip, Ludacris, and Raekwon, to name a few.  Ordinarily, I could care less what Damon Dash does.  But in choosing this name for the project, he crossed a line: You can’t match black rappers and white rockers and call it “BlakRoc.”No, BlakRoc has nothing to do with black rock, something I’ve spent nearly the last three years championing on my blog.  The conflation of the two is offensive. There’s too much history there. It’s like he’s acknowledging the existence of black rock with his middle finger.  “BlakRoc” is a slap in the face to those of... »

CinemaSpy's Week-End TV Recap

17 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

We've been a bit neglectful so far this fall season with our television coverage, particularly when it comes to analyses of episodes week to week. So we're going to do our darnedest to correct that oversight, starting right here, right now, with a look back at last week.

After careful consideration, we began to realize that detailed reviews of every episode of every major series, every week, was just too unwieldy—we haven't the manpower, and we doubt you have the patience to sift through long deliberations about the lives of your favorite characters on your favorite shows. We'll still do more detailed reviews every once in a while, but expect analyses of partial seasons more often than individual episodes.

So what's the alternative? Mini recaps/reviews. Think of them as Bk Burger Shots for your pop culture soul.

Ok, that's a wee bit disgusting. Think of them as "reviews you can use, »

Zebediah de Soto Explains His Vision for Night of the Living Dead: Origins

The CGI wizard/director explains how he won't tarnish the image of the original George A. Romero film

For fans of classic filmdom, remakes can be a tough pill to swallow, and there likely can't be harder fans to please than fans of the 1968 George A. Romero classic, Night of the Living Dead. Director Zebediah de Soto knows full well the fears fans of the Romero zombie film may have towards his new origin story film, Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D, largely because he is a horror fanboy himself, even commenting on our story on Danielle Harris' casting of Barbara. He wants the fans to know that he is not trying to tarnish the legacy of this great horror film, but merely expand upon it with his new Night of the Living Dead: Origins 3D that will give us a new 3-D/CGI look at parts of »

The Latest News On The Italian Job 2

Since The Italian Job snuck onto screens in 2003 and got away with over 170$ million in box office gold, buzz has been building about the proposed sequel, The Brazilian Job.  The hope, stoked by hints from producer Donald De Line (currently working on Green Lantern),was for a 2011 release with all the major players returning.  That’s a lot of schedules to coordinate, seeing as how we’re talking about Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Ed Norton, Donald Sutherland, Jason Statham, Seth Green and Mos Def, all recognized stars with any number of projects to choose from.

So what’s the news?  Since our last update the new news is…

Wait for it…

Nothing.

That’s right.  Apparently Paramount had a script and even a budget, but management changes put development on hold.  Now director F. Gary Gray, whose current feature Law Abiding Citizen hits theaters on October 16th, says that The Brazilian Job »

New Night of the Living Dead: Origins Details

5 October 2009 2:11 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Writer-director Zebediah De Soto isn't the first person to remake Night of the Living Dead, he's just the latest. When George Romero created his zombie classic in 1968, copyright indications were left off of prints, putting the movie into public domain, which is why the movie has been subject to so many revisions and remakes.

Make-up effects guru Tom Savini remade the movie in color in 1990. A low-budget 3-D version was made in 2006, and now De Soto wants to make a CGI-heavy Night of the Living Dead, again in 3-D, that he describes as an "American-style anime." De Soto tried to settle the fears of zombie fans concerned with yet another remake in an interview with ShockTillYouDrop, explaining that his "expansion" of the original will not destroy what Romero originally created.

I know so many people get pissed off about this movie being redone again, but it's not the same regurgitated bulls**t. »

More Details on Night of the Living Dead: Origins

4 October 2009 1:37 AM, PDT | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Yup, another Night of the Living Dead is coming. This time, it's a big CGI affair, with first-time writer/director Zebediah De Soto hoping to make Night of the Living Dead: Origins an "American-style anime," whatever that means. However, De Soto tried to do some damage control with ShockTillYouDrop, telling them that's he's not looking to destroy what Romero created in what he calls an "expansion" of the original.

I loved Romero's movie and there are so many people out there raping it to death, I didn't want to be next in line to the gang bang. But I really wanted to do something that was a little creative but an homage to what he was doing. I want to see a zombie movie on the scale of [the Max Brooks novel] World War Z and the only thing I changed in terms of the terrain is that we go into New York City. »
