ABC Gives 'Castle', Nathan Fillion the Back Nine

20 October 2009 9:20 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

ABC has crowned Canadian actor Nathan Fillion with a full-season order of Castle. The network picked up the back nine episodes, reports Variety, despite the fact that ratings have been unspectacular (a chronic problem for many shows right now, frankly).

The series has garnered second place among the broadcasters in its Monday night 10pm timeslot, averaging a 2.5 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 and 10.1 million viewers overall, reports the trade. The show has had a slight uptick in recent weeks, and improved its performance over last year at the sam time by 4%, prompting the network's choice to pick it up.

In the show, Fillion stars as a novelist who helps a police detective (Stana Katic) solve crimes. Joining Fillion are castmembers Susan Sullivan, Molly Quinn, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Tamala Jones, Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever.

Sharp genre aficionados will recognize the names Rob Bowman (The X-Files, Reign of Fire) and René Echevarria (Star Trek, »

Castle Season One DVD Review

16 October 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The one-hour cop/murder mystery drama. Has there been a genre that has been as used as this? How is a writer/producer supposed to create something in this genre that hasn’t been done to death? Well, the creator of Castle has done a pretty good job with creating a cop/murder mystery drama that has a great mix of story, strong characters, humor and heart. My review after the jump:

Castle gets it’s name from the main character Richard Castle played by Nathan Fillion. Richard Castle is a rich and famous murder/mystery novelist who at the opening of the series is on the verge of releasing his latest book in his “Derek Storm” series. Everyone is sure to love it. The only problem is that Castle has decided to kill off his golden goose in this book because he’s lost the spark in writing for the character. »

Booker T.: Potato Hole

20 April 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

Booker T. returns with his first album in 20 years

Everybody has heard Booker T. & the MGs’ loping, twisting instrumental hit “Green Onions,” even if they don’t know it by name. According to Rob Bowman’s exhaustive Stax history Soulsville U.S.A., the group’s original bass player Lewie Steinberg came up with the song’s title: “To him,” guitarist Steve Cropper says, “[onions] were funky because they were stinky.” That’s a useful criterion of funkiness, defining it as a know-it-when-you-smell-it quality. Potatoes aren’t especially stinky in that regard; they won’t make you cry and don’t caramelize especially well, but Booker T. Jones’ new solo album, Potato Hole, is nevertheless pungently funky, though iin a different odiferous way than his early work with the MGs. »

Manners was a workhorse who directed some of The X-Files best and scariest episodes, and he became the go-to-man for mythology episodes after Rob Bowman left the series.  He stuck with The X-Files right through to the end of season nine, and directed the two-part series finale "The Truth" in 20 [...] »

Why the Comic-Book Movie Industry Needs a Female Superhero

4 January 2009 11:43 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

In a time when comic book geeks are actually getting laid and cute girls are parading around the convention halls in next to nothing to emulate their favorite superheroines, isn't it a little sad that us girls have yet to have a quality superhero moment on celluloid? For the past decade or so we've been proud to shell out our ten bucks to the movie house to watch Tobey Maguire and Christian Bale kick ass in spandex, because seriously, it's Tobey Maguire and Christian Bale in Spandex, but we deserve more than that. Male superheroes are great and I'll watch as many movies about them as the studios can shell out, but at the same time, attending the very same movies to see women reduced to the obligatory role of shrieking damsel in distress has been less than inspiring. Not to mention how it must look to the outside community »
