Review: ‘Love Happens’

21 September 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Love Happens is a steaming  pile of mediocrity. It is so bland, that it took me ten minutes to think of a second sentence to write about it. Despite having star power that most romantic comedies can only dream of, the story falls flat on its face.

Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) plays Burke, a widower. He has parlayed his grief into a career as a self-help guru who helps people survive the grieving process.  He is sincerely interested in helping the people who attend his seminars, and seems genuinely touched by their stories. Seems like the perfect chap to set a gal’s heart a-flutter.

Jennifer Aniston is Eloise, a quirky florist. Hollywood dictates that all quirky ladies wear hats, and this movie is no exception. Rule of thumb:  hats = zany free spirit. She has just ended a bad relationship (lipstick on a wine glass helpfully confirms that her »

Review: Love Happens

19 September 2009 9:13 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

One of the great challenges facing any film critic is the quest to find something interesting to write about a movie like Love Happens. Coming straight from the romantic comedy drawing board, there’s virtually no cliché left unexplored by director/co-writer Brandon Camp and his writing partner Mike Thompson. It’s a dull picture, calculated counterprogramming, and watching it is akin to experiencing the giant Hollywood machine at work. Let’s run down a list of the movie’s features. Does it have a sensitive, burly man as its main character? Check. How about a beautiful modern setting? Check. Awkward yet cute meeting between seemingly mismatched partners? Absolutely there is. Will they fight before discovering they’re drawn to each other? Of course they will. Can’t forget the goofy, comic relief best friends, can we? Nope. The movie has them as well. One could go on and on. Aaron Eckhart »

Movie Review: “Love Happens”

18 September 2009 8:50 PM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Seen on: September 18, 2009

The players: Director: Brandon Camp, Writers: Brandon Camp, Mike Thompson, Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston, Dan Fogler, John Carroll Lynch, Martin Sheen

Facts of interest: None.

The plot: A self-help author (Eckhart) who has troubles dealing with his own problems falls for a florist.

Our thoughts: Brandon Camp’s “Love Happens” is more of a tearjerker than a romance, and that’s certainly part of what’s wrong with the film. As awkward as it sounds, this movie would probably work a whole lot better without the love story, because at its core, it’s more about dealing with loss than falling in love. »

Exclusive Video: Love Happens for Jennifer Aniston

18 September 2009 12:47 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Hot on the heels of her extremely successful family film, Marley & Me last Christmas and her equally successful romantic comedy, He's Just Not That Into You earlier this year, Jennifer Aniston returns to the big screen looking for love again in Love Happens, which opens in theatres everywhere on September 18th. I had a chance to speak exclusively with the star of the film, Jennifer Aniston and it's first-time director, Brandon Camp about the funny and romantic film.

Love Happens stars Aaron Eckhart as Burke Ryan, a self-help writer who deals with his wife's sudden death by writing an extremely successful book on dealing with loss. While on a business trip to his wife's hometown, Burke realizes that he may not have completely healed himself from his loss and begins to feel like a fraud for pretending to help others when he cannot help himself. While dealing with the ghosts of his past, »

Who’s It For? If you hear Aniston and romance, then tune out of all other things, well then you aren’t even reading this. Everyone else could save this one if they’re on a plane.

Expectations: I was worried the plot would not be serious enough, though I’m a big fan of Eckhart and Aniston is starting to grow on me.

Love Happens Review

17 September 2009 7:15 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

There are certain steps that one must take in order to cope with the loss of a loved one. While Burke, played by Aaron Eckhart, walks people through their grievances, he avoids facing his own – until he comes face to face with Eloise, played by Jennifer Aniston. From there he must deal with the sharp and unrelenting pain of facing reality over the death of his own wife.

What appears to be a soft, romantic drama and comedy of sorts turns into one huge sob-fest. From start to finish we are thrust into the most depressing topics amongst the backdrop of the sodden city of Seattle. By the end of the movie you feel as smothered and depressed as the lead character, wondering when you will finally get out of the movie and get some fresh air. Though the atmosphere reeks thickly of the melodrama, the plot still holds fairly strong. »

Opening Night - Jennifer Aniston Says Love Doesn't Happen as Fast as It Does in Love Happens

17 September 2009 9:20 AM, PDT | amctv.com - AMC News: Opening Night | See recent amctv.com - AMC News: Opening Night news »

Love Happens might be a romantic comedy -- or a romantic drama -- depending on who you ask. At the premiere in Westwood this week, which we covered live via AMC News on Twitter, some of the stars leaned one way, while others -- including director Brandon Camp -- felt differently. This is a film that comes from a personal place of loss for Camp, and a story that star Jennifer Aniston (but not co-star Aaron Eckhart) said was tough to wrap one's head around. Take a look at this week's Opening Night to find out why.

Weird how it feels like a “slow” week when I’ve got “only” four movies on my slate. Four movies, that is, in a screening room, which isn’t counting all the press roundtables I’m doing this week, and the stack of DVDs I want to get to, and the IFC movies available on demand I’d like to watch, and so on. Not that I’ll actually get to them all: no, they’ll just keep sitting there in those piles around my desk, alternately taunting me and weeping inconsolably at how it’s obvious that I never loved them and are clearly enjoying breaking their hearst by ignoring them... If I were inventing a fake movie and a fake poster for that fake movie for a real movie that wanted to send up Hollywood’s love of apocalyptic levels of bullshit and schmaltz when it comes to “romance, »

MovieWeb's 2009 Fall Movie Guide!

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.
