Directed by: James Wong
Cast: Justin Chatwin, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung and Chow Yun-Fat
Running Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Rating: PG
Plot: A young man (Chatwin) trained in super martial arts must stop an ancient evil force from ending the world.
Who’s It For? Tweenage boys and their complacent chaperones/parents. Fans of the series will likely be disappointed, especially those who watched “Dragonball Z” on TV like this guy.
Movie:
As far as adaptations that should never exist in the first place go, there have been worse. Like the best of the worst, Dragonball: Evolution was never really asked for by fans. In fact, the film is being rejected more than accepted by fans. And even more fans are too busy disregarding its entire existence to even reject it. But still, this is no super disaster like that Super Mario Bros. movie with Bob Hoskins »

There are certain movies that only a die-hard fan can truly appreciate how utterly bad and painfully horrendous the movie really is. “Dragonball Evolution” is one of those movies. Admittedly, I’m a life-long Dragonball Z fanatic. I caught on to the original Japanese Anime back when you could only find them on bootleg in the comic book store. The series was awesome. Each movie was better than the one prior – with the occasional exception of movies like Bio-Broly of course. So, why ruin a good thing by transforming it into a live-action feature? Dragonball Evolution loosely follows the original Dragonball story arc, before Goku (Justin Chatwin) grew up, married Chi Chi and had a son named Gohan. The threat of King Piccolo has returned. Piccolo seeks to collect the seven scattered Dragonballs, which united can call forth the ancient dragon Shenron to grant one "perfect wish." When Goku’s »

The popular animated television show and manga is given the big screen treatment but it may be too late. The film feels very rushed and might.ve been better to have hit theaters in the heyday of Dragonball mania. Goku (Justin Chatwin) is a soon-to-be-eighteen-year-old kid who lives with his grandfather (Randall Duk Kim) who teaches him martial arts. His grandfather gives him a mystical object called a Dragonball before his eighteenth birthday. He.s supposed to be celebrating the big day with grandfather, but Chi-Chi (Jamie Chung) asks him to her party and since he.s enamored with her he skips grandpa.s party. It may have worked out for the best since the evil alien Piccolo (James Marsters) and »

A James Marsters fansite (originally published here, from German mag “Nautilus”) posted an interview today in which he confirmed that he will be returning for a second film based on the the cult Manga series “Dragonball Evolution”. Marsters portrays the villain character known as “Lord Piccolo”.
The original “Dragonball Evolution” grossed $9 million dollars in the Us, and around £1 million on a fairly limited release in the UK, but hauled in $45 million from international markets, playing especially well in China and Japan.
We also received details today about the UK release of the film on DVD and Blu-ray, scheduled for September 7th 2009. The releases will feature a good bundle of special features, including some Blu-ray exclusive content as below.
“Released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment the film follows the young Goku (Justin Chatwin – War of the Worlds, The Invisible) as he battles the most evil of villains in his quest to protect the Earth. »

Dragonball Evolution Directed by: James Wong Written by: Ben Ramsey Starring: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, James Marsters, Randall Duk Kim, Joon Park, Ernie Hudson Asian culture has had a massive influence on North America over the past decade and a half, to the point where nearly every popular children's animated series is now either being imported from Japan or created in the same art style, virtually every horror movie is required to have creepy children in it, and the majority of action movies made since The Matrix has tried to emulate the same slick martial arts choreography. Now the latest trend in Hollywood has producers trying to repackage some of the biggest Japanese animated series as live action films, and it seems only appropriate that Dragonball is one of the first to find its way to the big screen. Based on the manga by Akira Toriyama, »

The players: Director: James Wong, Writer: Ben Ramsey, Cast: Justin Chatwin, Joon Park, James Marsters, Emmy Rossum
Facts of interest: Wong also directed "The One" and "Final Destination."
The plot: Goku must find the seven magical dragonballs before the ruthless villain Piccolo calls forth a badass demon who will destroy the world.
Our quick thoughts: James Wong’s “Dragonball Evolution” is certainly not the worst film I’ve seen so far this year, but it’s still a bad one. A very bad one, actually. I don’t really know much about the “Dragonball” franchise and I’ve never read the series or played any of the video games, but I like to think it doesn’t take an expert to realize this movie is pretty much a crappy big-screen adaptation. »

Dear Dragonball: Evolution Filmmakers:
Even knowing nothing about the original manga by Akira Toriyama, I feel safe in saying that you, sirs, have not made a movie that deserves the name.
At least, I hope not, because I cannot believe that one of the most popular manga series of all times bears any close resemblance to the movie that you have unleashed upon the world.
You cast Justin Chatwin as Goku, an actor in his mid-20s who is probably a perfectly nice gentlemen in real life, good-looking, easygoing, and prompt for his set calls. He is somewhat believable as a feckless 18 year old, but entirely ineffectual as a warrior in training. His stunt doubles (Jackson Spidell and César René Vigné), however, did some pretty good work, and I must allow that the fight scene in which Goku avoids hitting anyone is nicely choreographed.
But we simply must address the casting of Chow Yun-Fat and, »

Dragonball: Evolution is based on a manga series (that's Japanese for "comic book") that was also turned into an anime series (that's Japanese for "cartoon") and is now a movie that was not screened for critics before it opened (that's Hollywood for "we're not very proud of it"). I doubt it's what fans of the story have been hoping for all these years, as they've endured one delay after another in getting a live-action version to the screen, but it's not aggressively bad. It's more like a dumb, energetic puppy.
It is the story of Goku (Justin Chatwin), a teenager being raised by his grandfather (Randall Duk Kim), who teaches him the ancient ways of martial arts and, from the looks of it, the Force. Goku has supernatural powers that he has not yet learned to harness, including the ability, not unlike a video-game character, to throw colorful balls of energy. »
