The Notable Films of 2010: Part Four

Georgia

Opens: 2010

Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech

Director: Renny Harlin

Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.

Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.

Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three »

The 'Devil Wears Prada' actress – who stars as Princess of Lilliputia in new movie 'Gulliver's Travels', which is based on the classic novel by Jonathan Swift – has taken up the guitar-like instrument after seeing her two co-stars Jack Black and Billy Connolly playing it on set between takes. Emily, 26, claims she is getting good and serenades fiance John Krasinski with her favourite Otis Redding song. She said: "I can play 'Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay' and that Beatles song, 'When I'm 65' or is it '64'? Whatever it is. I like that one. Next I'd like to learn 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' on the ukulele." Emily is not the only star to have recently taken up the ukulele. Zac Efron, 22, has started to learn the instrument after becoming interested in it while shooting his new coming-of-age movie 'Me And Orson Welles'. He said: »

Interview: ‘The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day’ Director Troy Duffy on Hollywood’s ‘Financial Irresponsibility’

Chicago – “There’s not a bigger ‘f*ck you!’ from Hollywood than when they say: ‘Eh, we’re not going to release this film.’” But then the fans say: “Oh, you know what? About $100 million says that you are retarded. It says that you made a bad decision,” “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day” star Sean Patrick Flanery said in a Chicago interview with HollywoodChicago.com.

Flanery added: “Everybody thinks they know. Executives say: ‘We do this for a living.’ Well, you f*cked up. You f*cked up! You didn’t put this in the theater, and with no advertising, people just picked it up and said: ‘You’re an idiot. This is a good film.’”

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day Movie Review

Boondock Saints II:  All Saints Day

The incontinent brilliance of writer/director Troy Duffy's social satire eludes the perception of the self-important,  pseudo-intellectual types who routinely bore the tired testicles off the rest of us.  Particularly annoying are those who are hopelessly inured to the pablum of Hollywood formula.

The theater I was in was filled with what appeared to be a fairly healthy cross section of moviegoers.  They were absolutely beside themselves with spontaneous laughter; the kind of laughter that results from an unexpected test of dormant mental reflex. All of the returning cast turned in dependably solid performances.  Billy Connolly's extraordinary ability to both charm and rivet one's attention did not fail.  More flashbacks of Rocco would have been welcomed by a thirsty cult, to be sure.

Outstanding in the cast were two actors, the first being Cliff Collins. His "Romeo" was definitely not a Montague. »

Movie Review: The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

29 November 2009 3:13 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Like its predecessor, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is a rocking, firework popping action extravaganza that doesn’t add anything deep to the series but what it does is bring us the continuation of a cult classic that after 10 years hasn’t missed a beat.

It would be a disservice to harp on Troy Duffy’s issues getting this film made and the hoops it probably took for him to finally get it off the ground, but like its creator this film is messy, vulgar, violent and completely senseless but in way that’s lovable just like the its cult classic predecessor.

All Saints Day, brings us back together with fraternal twins Murphy (Norman Reedus) and Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery), who managed to escape back home to the hills of Ireland after their justice driven vigilante kill spree throughout Boston. A decade has passed but the drive to »

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Directed by: Troy Duffy

Cast: Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus, Billy Connolly, Clifton Collins Jr., Julie Benz

Running Time: 2 hrs

Rating: R

Release Date: November 13, 2009 (Limited)

Plot: The vigilante assassins (Flanery, Reedus) return from hiding in Ireland to stop a copycat killer who is putting a bad mark on their legacy. While back home they attempt to fix the unfinished business with the powerful Yakavetta Mob.

Who’S It For? If you like action movies with slow motion shootouts, slim plots, and shabby moral lessons, then you probably saw 1999’s original The Boondock Saints. Now that ten years have past, do you want the same thing again, or would a hundredth re-watch of the first suffice?

Expectations: The first film succeeded with a few clever ideas, such as a different way to imagine a shootout. Now that the Saints aren’t particularly new to us, »

Boondock Saints 2 Expands Theatrical Release

9 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

The Boondock Saints 2 Theatrical release has widened in Canada.   Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day has been confirmed to open Vancouver and Halifax on November 20th.  It will open Toronto this Friday, November 13th. Read the Dudes review of Boondock Saints 2

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is the much-anticipated sequel to the indie cult classic, The Boondock Saints. The film is the continuation of writer/director Troy Duffy’s tough, stylized cutting edge saga of the MacManus brothers (Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery).

The two have been in deep hiding with their father, Il Duce (Billy Connolly), in the quiet valleys of Ireland, far removed from their former vigilante lives.

When word comes that a beloved priest has been killed by sinister forces from deep within the mob, the brothers return to Boston to mount a violent and bloody crusade to bring justice to those responsible.

20 Ways to Get Your "Arrested Development" Movie Fix*

5 November 2009 7:09 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

*Until they actually make the movie

Forget Scientology or Heaven's Gate. Today, the biggest cult in our country may very well be the teeming masses anxiously awaiting the return of "Arrested Development." After years of rumors and dashed hopes, it seems the beloved TV show will finally, for real, this time, be reincarnated on the big screen.

But don't break out your Cornballers yet: the film isn't set to hit theaters until 2011. How will you last that long? While you can treasure your DVD collection of all three seasons (or, for that matter, catch re-airs on IFC), you'll probably want to vary things up in the year-plus before we get sweet relief. Off the top of your head, you might know to watch Michael Cera in "Juno," but where can you find Judy Greer in a role as crazy as Kitty Sanchez? Will Arnett as a man as bumbling and self-involved as Gob? »

Expected: ‘Boondock Saints II’ to open in more cities

4 November 2009 8:26 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

It was only a mater of time.

Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day will expand to more theaters across the nation after the sequel to the 1999 cult hit performed well in limited release. Film distributor Apparition will open the movie in more cities including San Francisco, Dallas, San Diego, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and Houston on November 13th.

Boondock Saints II nabbed $500,000 last weekend in Los Angeles in New York. Using a tactic most recently used by Paramount’s Paranormal Activity, producers set up a web page asking fans to “demand” that the film be shown in their area.

Directed  by Troy Duff , the Boondock sequel stars Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery, Clifton Collins, Julie Benz, Judd Nelson, Robert Cochrane Marley Jr., Brian Mahoney, David Ferry, David Della Rocco, Peter Fonda and Billy Connolly.

'Boondock Saints II' Brings The McManus Brothers Back... But What About The Rope?

30 October 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Sure, this weekend's premiere of "Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" features the return of Connor and Murphy McManus, Il Duce and the rest of Boston's favorite movie vigilantes, but when I asked around for some questions to ask the film's director and stars when they dropped by Movies Blog HQ, there was one element from the first film everyone was asking about for the sequel: the rope.

Fans of the original film will no doubt recall the brothers' oft-quoted, obscenity-laden debate regarding the merits of bringing rope to their showdown with a mob boss—and according to director Troy Duffy and stars Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus and Billy Connolly, the rope is indeed back by popular demand.

"The rope will make a reappearance," laughed Duffy.

"When we showed it in Boston, there was a huge roar from the audience," added Connolly.

Exclusive Video: Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus Are Back in The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

30 October 2009 10:55 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Way back in 1999, a film unbeknownst to practically everyone, was released in a miniscule theatrical rollout before it hit the shelves on DVD, then only available at Blockbuster. As the word-of-mouth kept growing and growing, the DVD was finally available for purchase in 2002 and not long after that, Troy Duffy's The Boondock Saints became a cult phenomena, the likes of which are rarely seen in the movie biz. Now, a decade later, Troy Duffy is finally able to round up the Saints once more for the highly-anticipated sequel The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, which will be released in theaters on October 30.

Of course, the Saints themselves, Sean Patrick Flanery as Connor, Norman Reedus as Murphy, and Billy Connolly as their father, Il Duce (or Poppa M) have returned for the sequel, but we also get some new faces in the mix as well. Clifton Collins Jr., a »
