Chicago – Over the course of dozens of editions of HollywoodChicago.com’s DVD Round-Up column, we have brought our readers more than a few collections that possessed a remarkable variety of genres in one piece, but few match this week’s column, a quartet of titles that include supernatural drama, reality television, foreign animation, and classic fantasy.

It would be harder to say what these titles have in common than to point out their remarkable differences. All they really share is a launch on DVD around the same time. We truly have something for everyone this week. Synopsis, cast, technical details, and special features follow. Pick your favorite…

[TV] Medium: The Fifth Season

8 October 2009 2:16 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Lots of shows have played around with the premonition and psychic vision backbone that forms the procedural skeleton of countless television shows. Whether it’s a live Ouija-board-esque, host talks to dead relative half hour spook show or a 42-minute narrative about solving clues with a sixth sense, there’s a basic requirement for admission to each show: you have to want to believe. Belief as a fundamental tool has seen just as much play on the screen as shows about the skeptics and frauds (House, Psych, Mentalist – or any show that uses deductive reasoning in lieu of supernatural forces). Medium, however, lies firmly on the side of pure unwavering belief. Even when protagonist Allison Dubois temporarily loses her ability the show never ceases to pound home its message “there is validity to psychic abilities”. The series spent a good deal of time mapping out the eccentricities of Allison’s gift and now, »

TV Review: ‘Medium’ Jumps Networks, Still Delivers Thrills

25 September 2009 1:24 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When NBC committed five hours a week to “The Jay Leno Show,” we knew a few corners would have to be cut when it came to scripted programming at the peacock network but no one really expected that the consistent (both creatively and in the ratings) “Medium” would get the axe. NBC’s unwanted program has found a new home on CBS and makes the network jump largely unaltered and ready to keep delivering the thrills that fans expect.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 In what would have been a cruel joke on the audience if CBS hadn’t save the day, the fifth season of “Medium” ended with Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette) in a coma. After playing with the traditional “dream sequence opening” of the show, the sixth season premiere of “Medium” opens with Allison coming back to life. But has she returned the same?

Medium: NBC Cancels Patricia Arquette Series, Still Hope for Season Six?

19 May 2009 11:42 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

NBC has decided to cancel its long-running midseason staple, Medium, after five seasons on the air. Do you think Allison DuBois saw it coming?

Medium revolves a wife, mother, and psychic (Patricia Arquette) who uses her abilities to help the local police force. The show also features Miguel Sandoval, Maria Lark, Jake Weber, Sofia Vassilieva, David Cubitt, Miranda Carabello, Tina Dijoseph, John Prosky and Kendahl King.

The drama has been longtime midseason player for the peacock network, starting off in January 2005. Season one averaged almost 14 million viewers. Later seasons have attracted fewer people but the show has remained a good utility player for NBC. This season, the series built on the rapidly declining lead-in audience of Heroes.

But ultimately, the renewal decision came down to dollars and cents. NBC wanted financial cutbacks and a limited episode order. As a result, talks with the show's studio, CBS TV Studios, stalled last »

Fifth Season of ‘Medium’ Opens With Average Pair of Episodes

2 February 2009 5:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Television Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – “Medium” is like TV comfort food. NBC’s paranormal mystery will never break new ground but is almost always entertaining. Each episode and overall season has a way of blending into each other, but there’s something comforting about a Monday night staple that is, at the very least, consistently satisfactory and sometimes better.

Take for example the fifth season opener, “Soul Survivor”. It is an episode that, except for a few character details, could have been in any season of the show. If you’re looking for a series with more pronounced character arcs and development, “Medium” is not the show for you.
