Star Wars: Imperial Military Personnel Stories

5 December 2009 11:27 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

(This article was written by Screen Rant guest contributor Tim Keyes).

Browsing around my usual list of websites today I was fortunate enough to stumble upon what I can honestly say is the highest quality and most entertaining fan film ever produced for Star Wars. Going by the name of Imperial Military Personnel Stories, or Imps for short, its tagline reads “The Most Epic Documentary… of the Best Damn Job in the Galaxy.”

A feature length film is being released in chapters and they first started work on it in 1999. Upon seeing this, it immediately called to mind another, shorter fan film, Troops. This short was basically a Cops-based stormtrooper parody that detailed the events of Star Wars: A New Hope on Tatooine from the perspective of the stormtroopers. As it turns out, it’s the same people who were responsible for Troops that created Imps and this was »

[TV] Transformers: Season Two, Volume One

21 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Like it or not, the Transformers motto “more than meets the eye” becomes a tad ironic when used in the theme song for the cartoon. The motto alludes to robots from another planet which take the form of familiar earthbound crafts like cars, jets, etc. but outside the show’s premise, the idea is just misleading. The series as a whole is incredibly simplistic in every way. The writing, the animation and the voice acting are incredibly formulaic and simple with little else to offer in terms of depth or beauty. Now, if you trust age old idioms about appearances, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For Transformers: Season Two, Volume One there can be only one interpretation of the intended beholden: a shelf prize for diehard fans. For anyone else this set is just an example of outdated cartoons offered for kitschy nostalgic purposes.

A Brief Chat with Megatron Himself, Frank Welker

16 September 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Like Peter Cullen, the actor who provides the voice for his on screen adversary, Optimus Prime, Frank Welker is a bona fide icon of the voice recording world. Not just because he has more than four decades of work and 600 individual credits to his name. Not just because yes, he provided the voice for Megatron, one of the most famous villains in cartoon history. Rather, it's because people know and identify him just from his voice, which may run contrary to the idea of actors disappearing into their roles, but it demonstrates that what he does is so distinctive and special it transcends the limitations of the medium.

Sci Fi Squad recently caught up with Welker via email to discuss his illustrious history in voice recording, in conjunction with Shout! Factory's Sept. 15 DVD release of Transformers Season Two, Volume One. In addition to talking about bringing Megatron to life, he »

[DVD Review] Pooh's Heffalump Halloween Movie

31 August 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It was true of The Tigger Movie and it seems to be equally true of Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie: the new Pooh adventures are just rehashes of classic Hundred Acre Wood stories. The Tigger Movie imitated Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too while the Heffalump story is easily likened to Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day, the 1968 short that shared the themes of courage and facing your fears. What Blustery Day got right is that it reined in its runtime to a mere 25 minutes whereas Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie stretches itself thin over 66 minutes – and man is it a stretch.

Everything is all set and it seems like this just might be the best Halloween ever for the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood. All the costumes are ready (except for Gopher who’s oddly indecisive in this film – but he still whistles when he talks, so »

The Tigger Movie: Two-disc 10th Anniversary Edition - DVD Review

10 August 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

The wonderful thing about Tiggers is that Tiggers are wonderful things. It.s been ten years since this movie ran through theaters and marked the return to the Disney fold of songsmiths the Sherman Brothers. Tigger (Jim Cummings) is having a bad day. He accidentally destroys Eeyore.s (Peter Cullen) house while Rabbit (Ken Sansom), Piglet (John Fielder), Winnie the Pooh (Jim Cummings), and all his friends are trying to get ready for winter. Tigger is sulking around when Roo (Nikita Hopkins) in trying to cheer him up asks if there are other Tiggers. Tigger is curious as to why he.s never seen any more of him. He talks to Owl (Andre Stojka) and finds out about family trees, which »

[DVD Review] The Tigger Movie: 10th Anniversary Edition

1 August 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When Disney announced The Tigger Movie was in the works over a decade ago, my immediate question was “Didn’t they already make a Tigger movie?” Back in 1974, Disney created Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, which I maintain is the best animated rendition of A.A. Milne’s characters to this day. Along with being made first, it had a storyline that actually made sense and which is used to some extent in the 1999 The Tigger Movie: the denizens of the 100 Acre Wood are tired of Tigger’s bounciness. That film had Tigger giving up his bouncy ways only to have his friends decide they prefer Tigger when he’s springing to and fro.

So what did Disney create The Tigger Movie around to entertain children for 77 minutes while cashing in on the most bankable character of Milne’s lot? Identity issues. If it’s accepted that tiggers must bounce, »

Optimus Prime's Late Night top ten list

7 July 2009 12:09 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

For one of his program's Top Ten lists Late Night talk show host David Letterman brought out one of the bigger stars of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Mr. Optimus Prime. The Autobot leader presented the list of Top Ten things that sound cooler when spoken by a giant robot which, of course, Optimus then proceeded to do. (The really geeky thing that I dig is that Peter Cullen, the voice actor used in the movie for Optimus Prime's dialogue as well as the originator of the role back in the 1980s delivered Letterman's Top Ten list. +1 for geekyness!)

The really nutty thing is that Letterman is right: things do sound cooler when a giant robot says them. Can we get a William Shakespeare movie featuring the Transformers in the bard's roles?

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'

28 June 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

It's hard to review a film that lives up to so many expectations. Expectations defined by words like repetitious, noisy and annoying. Yet, coming out of the multiplex many will feel that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is all of those things...and ultimately, a bit anesthetizing.

We've come to expect visual eye candy from Michael Bay; big movies with big ideas and big explosions that are technically as near perfect as any Hollywood filmmaker's work has a right to be. On this count, Bay delivers the goods, in copious volume. But it's the stuff that he's so good at that ultimately gets in the way with Revenge of the Fallen, as the characters continuously take a backseat to the big action set pieces and CGI robots. Actually, that's not even accurate—the characters aren't in the backseat, they're clear at the back of the bleachers for this outing, which »

‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ Trailer Playing With ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’

26 June 2009 4:59 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – If you’re seeking an extra (or single) reason to see the overwhelmingly poorly reviewed “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” this weekend, here’s one for you.

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Review

26 June 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Something tells me that Michael Bay and Stephen Spielberg and everyone else behind the creation of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen didn't get the memo that 'less is more.' Nope. Instead of learning what didn't work for 2007's Transformers, Bay and cohorts took all the things that sucked about that movie and amplified them about 10 times for the encore. Of course, my expectations going in were appropriately set low. The first film only got one thing right: Peter Cullen to voice Optimus Prime. That's it. The rest was a Tazmanian Devil-like windstorm of bad dialogue and distant storytelling that felt about as much like the Transformers as watching the Go-Bots did. But how are you going to ignore the alleged biggest blockbuster of the summer? You can't; you simply buy your ticket and report to the long line outside the theater like the rest of the lemmings. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

24 June 2009 2:20 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

It looks like summer 2009 is turning into the year of big budget busts. While J.J. Abrams Star Trek remains the clear front runner for ‘best of the summer’, the rest of the blockbuster movie season has delivered X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Terminator Salvation, Land of the Lost and The Taking of Pelham 123 – all films that have parts that work, but as a whole fall flat. You can now add Michael Bay’s Transformers sequel to the list. It seems Michael Bay’s approach to Revenge of the Fallen was to top the first Transformers in everyway. Make it bigger with more explosions, more robots, more action. That might be what Bay and a lot of audiences re looking for, but it doesn’t make a better sequel as Revenge of the Fallen suffers from a lot of the same problems as the 2007 original. Shia Labeouf is back as Sam Witwicky, who »

‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’ is Galaxies Away From its Predecessor

24 June 2009 2:07 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – There are often many reasons sequels should not be made. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is one of them. Seeking that “Allspark” exhilaration pumped into many of us from the original “Transformers,” moviegoers will flock to the sequel with anticipation.

Rating: 1.5/5.0 The first 20 minutes or so (skipping the ridiculous introduction) will feel like preparation for lift-off. Sam (Shia Labeouf) and Bumblebee (voice by Mark Ryan) reappear in two familiar scenes, Mr. and Mrs. Witwicky (Kevin Dunn and Julie White) return with their well-executed bicker-banter and Mikaela (Megan Fox) remains with all the assets she brings to the screen.

Read Elizabeth Oppriecht’s full review of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” in our reviews section. We’re introduced to our first three Decepticons and they’re all impressive. From a ferocious tiger-looking beast to a beautiful and all-too-eager temptress (Isabel Lucas), the Decepticons are assembling a vicious team.

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen Review (Philip’s Take)

24 June 2009 12:02 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Generally, I like Michael Bay and will defend the guy when my peers and others claim he’s terrible or one of the worst people alive in the world today. The guy knows what he makes even if he indulges in himself a little too much at times. His films (outside of that bastardization of an attack) never try to be anything more than the sum of their parts, even Armageddon which should never be taken seriously to begin with. Seemingly he’s a perfect fit for the Transformers franchise as the series was always about giant robots kicking the crap out of the other. This theory was proven correct with the first film even if it leaned too much to the side of the humans and not enough on the robots. What it did have though was Steven Spielberg guiding Bay through it to make sure Michael didn’t »

We are on the eve of history today as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen prepares to open nationwide Wednesday at 12am. After working and perfecting this masterpiece, Michael Bay must sit back and watch the numbers come rolling in. Critics are predicting that Revenge of the Fallen will not only take the weekend box office, but will outperform all other summer flicks. The cast and the crew of Transformers have their eye on the gold; try and beat the second-biggest Hollywood grossing film The Dark Knight which took home over 158.4 million dollars opening weekend. Tickets for tomorrow night's midnight showing are going quick and with weekend seats already filling up it seems that it could be a close race. With an all star cast leading the sequel into the history books, all we can do is pack into the theaters and watch history happen. Tomorrow Shia Labeouf is ready to »

[DVD Review] Transformers: The Complete First Season - 25th Anniversary Edition

18 June 2009 11:02 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Oh sweet cartoon nostalgia! Simultaneously revealing things we never saw in our cartoons way back when and reminding us of the things we did but wish we hadn’t. The 25th Anniversary release of Transformers: The Complete First Season almost manages to drown out the bitter with the sweet, but there still remains a few glaring issues with our old friends the Autobots and their adventures on Earth. Virtually hitting the 6 hour marker with episodic content, the 16 chapters in the fight against Megatron and the Decepticons are a vividly colored blast from the past with a shiny new package, some meager extras and a big Autobot magnet.

Cybertron flourished with a peaceful technological utopia where the life forms known as the Autobots, a sentient race of machines, existed in harmony. Until Megatron came on the scene. Seceding from the rest of his Autobot kind, he launched a civil war »
