Dark Shadows (2012)

12 May 2012 10:56 AM, PDT | Planet Fury | See recent Planet Fury news »

Directed by: Tim Burton

Written by: Seth Grahame-Smith, John August, Dan Curtis

Cast: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloë Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote

Witches, apparently, are the most powerful creatures on the entire planet.

Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) doesn't know this when he spurns the love of cleaning lady/witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) in preference for the doe-eyed Josette du Pres (Bella Heathcote). Angelique is a petty and vengeful creature, and so casts a spell that forces Josette to leap off a cliff and that turns Barnabas into a vampire. She then rallies the villagers against her ex-lover and arranges to have him buried for roughly 200 years, until he is awakened in 1972.

Barnabas gets dug up by a group of construction workers and rejoins what remains of his family. He finds they had long ago converted their fishing business into a cannery, »

Retro Shock Theater: Burnt Offerings from Dark Shadows' Dan Curtis

11 May 2012 1:35 PM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Some horror films are of such enduring power and undeniable craftsmanship – films like Psycho, The Exorcist, Carrie and The Shining – that they find a new and devoted fan base with each subsequent generation while others reside almost exclusively in the traumatized memories of the generation who first encountered them.  1976’s haunted house yarn Burnt Offerings would be an example of the latter, a staple of Gen-Xer’s childhoods whose reputation as a supremely frightening film has dimmed over the years.

With Tim Burton’s revival of Dark Shadows currently in theaters, some fans will naturally want to take a look back at producer/director Dan Curtis’ original supernatural soap opera but thinking of Curtis’ contributions to the genre (‘70s horror wouldn’t have been the same without him) made me curious to revisit his adaptation of Robert Marasco’s 1973 novel.

Curtis’ work was almost exclusively for television (besides Dark Shadows, »

In the year 1750, Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), a witch in every sense of the word, cursed Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) by turning him into a vampire and burying him alive. Nearly two centuries later, Barnabas is free and sets out to restore his family name but first he must confront the wicked witch of Collinsport. Based on the late 1960s popular television series created by Dan Curtis comes Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, marking Burton and Depp’s eighth collaboration. Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloë Grace Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley join the cast. Dark Shadows – The Review

11 May 2012 12:11 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The history of cinema has had many long-running actor/director partnerships. What first springs to my mind is the long collaboration between actor John Wayne and director John Ford, which has inspired several film books and documentaries. More recently we’ve had the Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro team-ups ( although Leonardo DiCaprio may just catch up to Mr. D ). And now we have the eighth film that actor Johnny Depp has done with director Tim Burton since they first paired all the way back in 1990 for Edward Scissorhands ( Wow! ). After films based on children’s books, a low-budget filmmaker’s life, and a Broadway musical what have the duo decided to tackle now? Why, it’s a classic cult TV show from the late 1960′s : Dark Shadows. What’s their take on this supernatural soap opera?.

Time for a bit of disclosure here. During its original run on ABC television, »

'Dark Shadows' Guest Review: 'Muddled Shadows' is More Like It

10 May 2012 9:00 PM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

Welcome to our new Guest Review column, featuring weekly film reviews written by notable critics from around the globe. So many adjectives have been hurled at Tim Burton and Johnny Depp over the course of their eight-film, 22-year collaboration, from “tender” (Edward Scissorhands) and “campy” (Ed Wood) to “chilling” (Sleepy Hollow), “charming” (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and “macabre” (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street). Rarely have I thought to use the terms “unfocused” or “slapdash” before … though Dark Shadows earns them both. Burton and his ghost-faced leading man have gone on record as stating Dark Shadows is a cheeky homage to Dan Curtis’ gothic soap...

For fans of the 1966-1971 ABC supernatural soap opera "Dark Shadows" (and they are legion), a lot is riding on Tim Burton's blockbuster film adapation to deliver the camp, romance and frights that made the show the hit that it was. The brainchild of producer Dan Curtis, "Dark Shadows" is legendary for pumping out a remarkable 1,225 episodes during its five-year run. The complete DVD box set comes in a mock coffin, and runs a whopping 30,000 hours over 131 discs. The show's best remembered for the character of Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid, who recently passed away, and by Johnny Depp in Burton's film), a 200-year-old vampire fresh from the grave and hellbent on saving his family's cannery in Collinsport, Maine from the vengeful hands of the beautiful witch Angelique (played by Lara Parker; Eva Green in the film) who initially cursed him back in the 18th century. 'Dark Shadows' Review: It's Not Just the Vampire That Sucks in Tim Burton's Retread

10 May 2012 9:30 AM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The original idea of a Tim Burton-directed “Dark Shadows” certainly must have seemed like a good one on paper, with the master of mass-market Goth applying his imagination and a Hollywood budget to the infamously on-the-cheap, Dan Curtis-created cult soap opera that ran from 1966 to 1971 on ABC before spawning various film and TV follow-ups. And then, when early trailers revealed that Burton was making a comedy with humor springing from an 18th-century vampire’s confusion in the mini-skirted world of 1972, it appeared that Burton would be returning to his »

"Dark Shadows" Movie Review -- How Many Kisses Do Johnny Depp and Tim Burton Get?

9 May 2012 9:27 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

If you are to believe the marketing campaign behind .Dark Shadows,. you would be led into thinking that the film is campy in the grand tradition of .The Addams Family.. But that.s not the case. .Dark Shadows,. while it has some semblance of camp, is not silly and treats its supernatural plotline with equal parts fun and thrills.

Based on the ABC television show from the 1960s created by Dan Curtis, the film version is an old-school gothic thriller with a twist. And no one can effectively mix gothic and camp together better than director Tim Burton and his muse, Johnny Depp.

Depp, who also produces the movie, stars as Barnabas Collins, a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine and the master of Collinwood Manor. He breaks the heart of a witch, Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), who turns him into a vampire and buries him alive. The year is 1760.

What You Need to Know About 'Dark Shadows'

Even immortal vampire Barnabas Collins himself would find it a Herculean task to wade through all 1,225 episodes of the original "Dark Shadows" TV series. To put it in perspective, a new complete coffin-shaped DVD box set boasts a runtime of 30,000 hours, and that's without bathroom breaks.

The supernatural soap opera, which ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, is now getting the full-on feature film treatment. "Dark Shadows" (the movie) has all the big-budget trimmings courtesy of director Tim Burton and his muse Johnny Depp as Barnabas. Before you devour the May 11 release, we've created an easy-breezy introduction to all the things you'll find lurking in the "Shadows."

Even though bloodsucker Barnabas is the everlasting icon of the show, he was not introduced until the 211th episode of the weekday soap. Up until that point the central character was a naïve young woman named Victoria Winters, a foundling with »

Johnny Depp, Tim Burton Travel To Collinsport In New Dark Shadows Featurette

8 May 2012 10:12 AM, PDT | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

A reluctant vampire with an irresistible allure. A mysterious ingénue, who is inexorably drawn to him. A jealous vixen, who is both seductress and sorceress. A strange family in a creepy old mansion, with secrets around every corner.

These were some of the hallmarks of a hugely popular series in the late 1960s that broke the mold of daytime television. In an era already marked by tremendous upheaval, “Dark Shadows” shook up the soap opera status quo with its unique blend of gothic mystery, romance and melodrama. Suddenly, young people were racing home from school to follow the strange twists and turns of the Collins family. Without DVRs, or even VCRs, to record missed episodes, “Dark Shadows” became the definition of “appointment television” for a generation of devoted fans, for whom it remains a cult favorite.

One of the series’ aficionados was Tim Burton, who grew up to break a »

The Daily Beast: "The Enduring Thrills of Dark Shadows"

8 May 2012 6:49 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Nearly 50 years ago, Gothic soap Dark Shadows hooked audiences with its spooky storylines and before-its-time remorseful vampire. Ahead of Tim Burton’s movie adaptation, a new DVD version of the show--a limited edition $600 complete series containing all 1220+ episodes packaged in a coffin--comes out Tuesday. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read "The Enduring Thrills of Dark Shadows," in which I reflect upon the enduring legacy of afternoon soap opera Dark Shadows and its influence upon popular culture today. I grew up watching both the 1991 revival series (which aired during primetime on NBC during the Gulf War) and the original, watching whatever scraps I could get my hands on from VHS tapes at Blockbuster and syndicated runs of the show. It remains a magical experience unlike anything on television to this day. In Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, due in theaters Friday, Johnny Depp puts on the fangs of immortal vampire Barnabas Collins, »

Dark Shadows: Johnny Depp and Director Tim Burton Discuss Why They Paired for a Vampire Movie

7 May 2012 8:06 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Dark Shadows isn't the first collaboration between actor Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton, but it could their riskiest since first uniting on Edward Scissorhands back in 1990. Based on the Gothic soap opera created by Dan Curtis that ran on ABC from 1966 to 1971, Dark Shadows follows the lives of the eccentric Collins family, including the 200-year-old vampire Barnabas, originally played by the late Jonathan Frid and portrayed by Depp in the movie.

While the show certainly has a loyal fanbase, Dark Shadows isn't quite as universally well-known as the last story Depp and Burton brought to the big screen, 2010's Alice in Wonderland. However, both Burton and Depp proclaim to be huge fans of the series, which unlike the seeming omnipresence of vampires in movies and TV series today, was one of its kind at the time. During the press conference for the movie this weekend at the Sls Hotel in Beverly Hills, »
