With only two Harry Potter films left, Warner Bros is desperately looking for a new fantasy series to replace its boy wizard. (Meanwhile, every studio from Sony to Disney are still looking for their version!) Two years ago, they snapped up the rights to Angie Sage's Septimus Heap series, and now Variety reports they're putting it into motion. They've attached David Frankel to direct, and Rob Lieber to adapt the first volume, Magyk.
Sage's seven-volume series shares a lot of similarities with young Potter. Septimus Heap is the seventh son of a seventh son, who possesses magical powers, and is apprenticed to ExtraOrdinary wizard, Marcia Overstrand. Naturally he must overcome many trials and tribulations in his magical training, and his life is a sharp contrast to that of his adoptive sister, Jenna, who gets to live in the comfort and security of the Heap household after a Skywalker sort of switcharoo. »

Not hours after the trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief debuted and threatened to become the next Harry Potter, another wannabe is sneaking up right behind it. Septimus Heap: Magyk has been in development at Warner Bros. since the studio picked up rights to the seven-book series in 2007, but now that they've picked a director, things are really cooking. David Frankel, who directed Marley & Me, will take over on Magyk, which tells the story of a boy who is destined to become a wizard and a girl who will be a princess. Septimus is destined to lose the Harry Potter lookalike contest, though, since Variety reports that the movie will be animated. Really, that's probably for the best-- anything deliberately trying to be Harry Potter Redux will be immediately dismissed as such. Animation might actually be able to set Septimus apart. »

Aware that the Harry Potter franchise is soon to disappear in a puff of smoke, Warner Bros have announced David Frankel (Marley & Me) as the director for the first of a new series of wand-wavers, Septimus Heap: Magyk - though unlike Ron, this one's going to be animated. The titular Septimus is the seventh son of a seventh son (as Latin fans might already have guessed) which automatically makes him a big ol' wizard. But he's spirited away as a newborn, while his parents raise an abandoned baby who is the lost daughter of a dead queen, leading to complications as the two get older and the confusion emerges. The books the film is based on, written by British-born Angie Sage, are already incredibly popular, shifting over 1 million in the States and hitting no. 1 in the New York Times Best Sellers List, with the fifth instalment, Syren (they really can't spell, »

Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's »

"Marley & Me" 3-Disc Bad Dog Edition reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor Sweet and sincere, “Marley & Me” is more a family drama than a comedy itself. Based on the memoir by John Grogan, the film follows the life of the Grogan couple with Owen Wilson as John and Jennifer Aniston, fittingly enough so, as his wife called Jennifer.“The world’s worst dog” is what John calls Marley as the film opens with the large Labrador running away from his owner. We then trace back to the beginning when the couple first picked up the adorably-innocent-looking pup. Through his adventure-filled life, Marley may keep the couple on their toes, ripping and shredding through the home, but he also shares in all of their experiences. From the Grogan’s first to their third child, the high and low moments in business, friendships and at home, Marley is part of it all. Director David Frankel »

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – “Marley & Me” is that rare, old-fashioned crowd pleaser that honestly pleases. The movie just works. Yes, it’s sentimental, melodramatic, and a bit long, but it’s completely effective and was underrated in theaters. This is going to be a movie that fans love for years to come and Fox has given their family-friendly hit a gorgeous three-disc Blu-Ray treatment.
“Marley & Me” opened with the highest Christmas day gross of all time and stayed at number one into 2009. It’s very easy to see why. This underrated dramedy directed by David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and written by the excellent Scott Frank (“The Lookout”) and Don Roos (“The Opposite of Sex”) is moving without being manipulative and the kind of heartwarming story of average people that you don’t see that often in the era of sequels and superheroes.
Marley and Me was released on Blu-Ray on March 31st, »

Are you a cat person or a dog person? One of the age-old questions. Dogs love you no matter what. Cats are more selective. Dogs chew up your shoes. Cats claw up the sofa. Dogs are like a kid on a long car ride who did not plan ahead by using the bathroom at the last rest stop. Cats are trained to use their litter box. Dogs play fetch. Cats play with string. Dogs bark in the night. Cats howl for food. Dogs jump up the moment you come home. Cats wake up from their nap to give you a little squinty-eyed smiled before curling up again. No matter what you prefer, loving one means you love animals all the same. And then there was Marley. The type of dog that could turn you into a cat person…and then back to dogs again. Marley was a bad dog. Bad, »

John (Wilson) eventually finds his voice at a newspaper when he starts talking about his dog, Marley. Based on the best-selling book by John Grogan. Who's It For? Wait for it, wait for it ... This one is for the dogs. Zing! Movie: Wilson is a perfectly cast, mild mannered man, which is saying a lot because of his previous high intensity comedic characters in his past. Steven Soderbergh is in talks to direct "Moneyball," the Columbia Pictures adaptation of Michael Lewis' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game." The book focuses on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics who used a sophisticated computer analysis system to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite a payroll dramatically lower than such big-market rivals as the New York Yankees. Brad Pitt, with whom Soderbergh has worked in all of the "Ocean's" films, has been circling "Moneyball" since last year, when Steve Zaillian signed on to adapt the book after original scripter Stan Chervin exited the project. "Marley and Me" helmer David Frankel had also been attached. Soderbergh has always wanted to make a sports film and sparked to the opportunity to reteam with Pitt. Soderbergh is looking to make the picture his next directing assignment. »

Steven Soderbergh was looking forward to making rock musical Cleo next, but when Hugh Jackman dropped out due to scheduling difficulties that moved back in his schedule, leaving a gap that looks set to be filled by sports drama Moneyball, which he's in talks to direct, with Brad Pitt looking at starring. Based on the book 'Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game' by Michael Lewis, it's the story of Billy Beane, the manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team, who used a computer programme to apply "sabremetric"* principles to the game and put together a team that play well but were affordable on his limited budgets. His team have regularly contended with much bigger, more expensive line-ups.Pitt and Soderbergh worked together, of course, on the three Ocean's films, and are said to be keen to team up again. Pitt's also keen on this story: he's said to have »

Brad Pitt and Steven Soderbergh, who previously collaborated on the Ocean’s trilogy, will reunite for Moneyball, an adaptation of Michael Lewis' book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. On second thought, maybe we'll hold off on filming that 3D Cleopatra musical starring Catherine Zeta Jones and, instead, film something with a little more commercial appeal that stars, say, Brad Pitt. According to Variety, Steven Soderbergh has decided to put that Cleopatra flick on the backburner in favor of Moneyball, based on the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. David Frankel (Marley & Me) was originally tapped to direct (off a script from Steven Zaillian), but there's no word on what happened there.
Based on a very real story, Pitt -- who worked with Soderbergh on all the Ocean's films -- will star as Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane who, back in 2002, helped his small-market team win over 100 games by using a sophisticated computer analysis system. I'm not entirely sure how cinematic and exciting a film about behind-the-scenes baseball statistics will be, »

Brad Pitt and Steven Soderbergh are an Ocean's apart no more. The director is in talks to reteam with his Ocean's franchise headliner on Moneyball, a sports film centering on the real-life Oakland Athletics' general manager who used a computer analysis program to draft a playoff-caliber team. While Pitt joined the project last fall, Variety reports that Soderbergh has entered into early talks to helm the flick after Marley & Me auteur David Frankel parted ways with the film. The underdog movie is an adaptation of Michael Lewis' bestselling Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, which chronicled Oakland A's G.M.
