They are smug, stomach-churning and delighted by their own existence
'Yep, it's that time of year again – and the Christmas adverts are already on the telly," remarks a man at the start of this year's B&Q Christmas advert, proving that the grand tradition of moaning about premature Yuletide ads has itself been absorbed by the Matrix and turned into a stick to beat us with. Let's hope this kind of jokey fourth-wall-breaking doesn't become a trend, or before long we'll all be moaning about the number of early Christmas ads that moan about the number of early Christmas ads, and then our moans about their moans will in turn form the basis of the next wave of ads, and so on and so on ad nauseam, until they're producing intricately constructed navel-gazing meta-commercials that are actually more self-aware than we are: fully sentient beings with thoughts and feelings of their own. »

Chicago – Any good reader of HollywoodChicago.com knows that we have a soft spot for modern British television. “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Primeval,” “Robin Hood,” “Ashes to Ashes,” and many more shows range from good to great. One of the best series of the ’00s is the excellent “Life on Mars,” soon-to-be available in a series 1 DVD box set and accompanied on store shelves this month by the sixth volume of the thrilling “Wire in the Blood”.
DVD Rating: 5.0/5.0 The spectacular “Life on Mars” was adapted into an ill-fated ABC remake last fall and I worry that American audiences will ignore the original because they see the remake as a failure (which is itself debatable). Whether or not you liked or disliked the Yank version, please check out the BBC original, a great twist on the standard police procedural.
Life on Mars will be released on DVD on July 28th, 2009.

Only in Ashes To Ashes could you be treated to a winning combination of Princess Margaret encountering a giant penis and the lead character's daughter getting a ticking off from Grange Hill's Mrs McClusky. Kicking off the second season in fine Eighties style, the episode neatly blends a self-contained murder mystery plot alongside the ongoing intrigue surrounding Alex Drake's comatose predicament. No radical alterations have been made to the show's format, ensuring that a steady flow of laughs are interspersed with the more dramatic and emotional aspects of the storyline. Gene Hunt's quips are as crude as ever (although nothing matches his legendary 'twanging of the royal hymen' line) and it's a treat to see Philip Glenister strutting back onto our screens free of any demonic American accent. Keeley Hawes has settled into her role as (more) »

Philip Glenister has called for fairer treatment of his Ashes To Ashes co-star Keeley Hawes ahead of the show's new series. Hawes suffered a frosty response from critics after she made her debut as Di Alex Drake on the BBC One time travel show last year. Glenister, who plays Dci Gene Hunt, later spoke out in support of the actress, claiming that her detractors should "hang their heads in shame". Reflecting on the criticism in a new interview with the Daily Record, Glenister explained: "What I objected to most was the personal nature of some of the attacks and the utter lack of appreciation of what a fine actress Keeley is, a woman (more) »

Television Rating: 5.0/5.0 Chicago – “Ashes to Ashes” may be one of the most unusual choices for a TV sequel but sometimes the best series come from the most unexpected places. This may be the most pleasant surprise TV fans will get all year. The BBC’s brilliant “Life on Mars” has been dragged from the glitz and glamour of the ’70s to the turbulent ’80s in the as-good-and-arguably-better “Ashes to Ashes,” another notch in the belt of great BBC programming.
If you’re not watching BBC America, you’re missing some of the best television out there. Go to your local DVD store and catch up on seasons of the new incarnation of “Doctor Who,” “Robin Hood,” “Skins,” “Primeval,” and the amazingly entertaining “Torchwood”. The original “Life on Mars,” not the far-inferior (but still better than the near-cancellation predicament it is in) ABC remake, won’t be on DVD until July 28th, »

Ashes To Ashes star Keeley Hawes has admitted to having a secret crush on co-star Philip Glenister's character Dci Gene Hunt. The actress, who plays Di Alex Drake on the BBC show, told Psychologies that she cannot help fancying Glenister's no-nonsense cop. "When Philip Glenister goes into character and starts shouting his head off, [all the women on set] go, 'Oooooh!' Women's lib out the window. You want him to come and save you," she said. ABC has announced that the time-traveling detective series Life on Mars will not be receiving a second season. Mars was an American remake of the British series of the same name. Starring Jason O'Mara, Gretchen Mol, Jonathan Murphy, Michael Imperioli and Harvey Keitel, Mars centers on a NYPD detective who, after a car accident, is mysteriously transported back to the 1970s. Originally developed and shot in 2007 under David E. Kelley, the show was redeveloped and reshot after Kelley departed. Under the new showrunners, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec and Scott Rosenberg, just O'Mara was kept from the original cast; it was also retooled to better reflect the U.K. original. The series, from 20th TV and ABC Studios, will complete its 17-episode freshman series order with the season finale written as a series finale that will wrap the loose story ends, explain how Tyler got transported back in time and (maybe »

ITV's Demons is likely to be axed after Philip Glenister announced his plans to quit, according to The Sun. Glenister - best known for playing Dci Gene Hunt in Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes - came under fire for his use of an American accent on the show. He later defended the choice of accent, explaining that he 'wanted the challenge'. A source told The Sun: "ITV spent millions on Demons - but things have not worked out. Philip made it clear (more) »

The ABC version of the hit BBC show "Life On Mars" may be on the bubble, but that doesn't mean the sequel of the original British show doesn't have a home in the United States. BBC America will launch "Ashes To Ashes" next month ... and they have high hopes for the series. The British version of "Life On Mars," which took its name from the David Bowie track that was playing at the beginning of the first episode, saw Sam Tyler (John Simm) transported back in time to the 1970s following a car accident. During his stint in the disco decade, Tyler (who was named after the character in "Doctor Who") ended up working for Detective Chief Inspector Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) in Manchester. And like that series, "Ashes To Ashes" gets its name from another Bowie song, and this time will ... »

Philip Glenister has revealed why he opted for an American accent to play vampire hunter Rupert Galvin in Demons. Speaking at the press launch for the ITV1 show, the Ashes To Ashes star said: "[Rupert] was written as a Texan originally and I thought b****cks to that - I'm not playing a Texan. They said I could play him as English, but I wanted to have the challenge of playing an American." (more) »

Philip Glenister has admitted that he is confused over the appeal of his Ashes to Ashes character Gene Hunt. The actor revealed that he is shocked by the female fanbase he has built up since taking on the role of the no-nonsense cop, who first hit screens in Life on Mars in 2006. "Hunt was originally meant to be this nasty dinosaur of an old cop," Glenister told the Daily Mail. "But, as soon as we shot the scene where he walked in and said, 'Don't ever walk into my kingdom, acting king of the jungle, cos you're wasting my time', the film crew all just fell about (more) »
