Why promoting 'FlashForward' as next 'Lost' was a bad idea

22 December 2009 1:57 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

If you watched any television on ABC during the months leading up to FlashForward's series premiere, you probably got the message loud and clear: FlashForward is the next Lost.  ABC did everything in their power to convince the viewing public that FlashForward was the show that was destined to fill the hole that was going to be left by Lost's absence after its 6th and final season.

The FlashForward promotion worked, too.  Many viewers were extremely excited leading up to FlashForward's premiere, and the buzz on the Internet was exactly what ABC was pushing.  The Lost fanbase, for the most part, tuned in to see what ABC expected them to watch when their beloved Island drama was dead and buried (unlike a certain ex-disabled walking deadman).

However, the FlashForward/Lost cross-promotion may have actually had negative consequences that ABC didn't expect, or that maybe they had their »

Bryan Singer Says 'X-Men: First Class' Might Supercede 'Magneto' Movie

22 December 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Last week’s announcement that Bryan Singer will return to direct “X-Men: First Class” has sparked speculation about which characters will appear in the film — especially since Singer has indicated that the focus will be on Professor Xavier and Magneto during their 20s. However, given the age of Magneto in this film, a “Magneto” solo movie may no longer be in the cards.

“This story would probably utilize some of the 'Magneto' story because it deals with a young Magneto,” explained Singer during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So it might supercede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust.”

“The X-Men universe is boundless,” continued Singer. “These are great characters. And as young characters, they are quite different than the characters we have seen in the contemporary movies.”

No Need For X-Men Origins: Magneto

22 December 2009 4:49 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Things are going according to plan for the future of the X-Men film universe… at least according to my thoughts on what we’d see from Fox Studios going forward. As expected, Bryan Singer is back in the fold and will be directing the prequel X-Men: First Class, and X-Men Origins: Magneto is seemingly even less likely to happen than before.

While some X-Men fans were hopeful of the second X-Men Origins film following the history of the master of magnetism, to me it was the least likely of the projects in development to happen. Not only would such a project require a re-cast of the title character, which would never please the full fanbase, but it would therefore be less bankable since the actors would be new to the franchise. Magneto was cool for the X-Men trilogy but would moviegoers buy into him as the lead with Sir Ian McKellen not playing him? »

Singer's 'First Class' to supersede 'Magneto'

22 December 2009 2:05 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Bryan Singer has claimed that his X-Men: First Class film will replace the planned Magneto prequel. The director, who signed a deal to return to the superhero series last week, suggested to The Hollywood Reporter that his project's overlap with Magneto could mean that David Goyer's movie gets put on the back-burner. "This story would probably utilise some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic (more) »

Can You Picture Robert Pattinson as Magneto?

12 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Actually, I can picture this. I may not be a fan of 'The Twilight Saga', but the idea of Robert Pattinson playing a young Magneto in the long simmering 'X-Men Origins: Magneto' project makes perfect sense to me.

It seems to make sense to Pattison, too. According to the Coventry Telegraph, the young heartthrob recently responded to a question about whether or not he'd like to play any comic book characters on the big screen, saying: "Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play."

Action heroes (and villains) appear to be the big draw right now for the 'Twilight' alums. Taylor Lautner has signed on to play the superhuman Max Steel, while Kellan Lutz wants to play the lead role in The First Avenger: Captain America.

Robert Pattinson wants to play Magneto in X-Men spin-off

12 December 2009 6:46 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The stars of the Twilight movies are obviously considering what they'll do after the final book, Breaking Dawn, is brought to the big screen - and action heroes (and villains) seem to be top of their lists.

Taylor Lautner has signed on to play the superhuman Max Steel, based on an action figure, comic and cartoon, while Kellan Lutz wants to play Captain America and also the brother of Matt Damon's Bourne character.

Now, Robert Pattinson has revealed that he too would like to play a comic book character.

During an interview, Pattinson was asked if he'd considered any superhero roles and replied: "Well, yeah, I think everyone wonders about that sometimes. My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess that's who I should probably play."

Magneto's a supervillain rather than a hero, of course, but Pattinson may have to wait a while. The 20th Century »

Robert Pattinson Believes He Should Be Magneto

11 December 2009 7:28 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

After portraying a vampire in "Twilight" and its sequel, Robert Pattinson has considered about playing a superhero. According to Comic Book Movie, when the British actor was interviewed by Frank Boyle, he admitted that he wants to be Magneto, a villain character with the power of magnetism from "X-Men" world.

"Well yeah [laughs], I think everyone wonders about that sometimes," he said when asked about whether or not he ever thought about playing a superhero in the future. He then added, "My little cousin tells me I look like Magneto so I guess thats who I should probably play [laughs]."

Unfortunately, Pattinson may have no chance to offer himself to play his dream character anytime soon as the film, "Magneto", is reportedly at the back of Marvel's queue. Though David Goyer has written the script for the film, producer Lauren Shuler Donner said, "I'm not sure that film is going to be made. »

Series Creator David S. Goyer Comments on 'Flash Forward' Hiatus

9 December 2009 11:41 AM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

We're scratching our heads and furrowing our brows like Mark Benford all the way to March, because that's when ABC's serialized drama Flash Forward is returning.  With three months to wait, the fans are devastated at this incredibly long hiatus.  But really, it's for the best, according to series creator David S. Goyer.

Talking to Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly, Goyer divulged the original plans he had for the series and why they changed.  The second half of Flash Forward's first season was initially set for January, but the schedule was just so frustrating that they had it moved.

'FlashForward' Author Defends ABC's Decision To Change The Show's Schedule

7 December 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Fans of "FlashForward" have plenty of cause to shoot the messenger after learning that the series won't return until March, by way of an extended preview at the end of the most recent episode.

David Goyer's science fiction series hasn't been without its own set of road bumps. While a holiday break was to be expected, ABC's decision to postpone future episodes of "FlashForward" came as a complete shock to viewers everywhere. But not everybody is disappointed in the schedule blip for "FlashForward." In fact, the decision is getting support from an unlikely source — Robert J. Sawyer, the author of the novel which "FlashForward" is based upon. According to the writer, the move to break up the back half of the season is likely a show of confidence on ABC's part.

"I suspect the announcing of the scheduling change could have been handled better, but, in fact, it's a very good thing overall, »

Also cast: Lindsay Kraft (Southland) and Cleo King (The Hangover); Kraft will play Rex's assistant, an aspiring singer/songwriter while King will play a private school bus driver coached to represent herself by Rex in the pilot. David Goyer Forecasts Future of FlashForward

6 December 2009 11:45 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

There was great news for fans of FlashForward last week: the drama delivered a suspenseful, well-paced, intriguing episode for the first time in a long time.

The installment, however, was quickly followed by bad news: the series won't return with new episodes until March.

Why the delay? Where does the show go from here? Producer/writer David Goyer spoke with Entertainment Weekly about it all, revealing a few FlashForward spoilers along the way. Excerpts follow...

On the new schedule: "We originally planned to come back in January, but about three weeks ago we sat down with ABC scheduling and looked at what our programming schedule would be like. And I think on serialized show like 24, Lost, and Prison Break the most important thing is to air consecutive episodes without repeats or preemptions... We’d rather bite the bullet, come back in March, and air all 13 episodes consecutively without preemptions."

'FlashForward': David Goyer explains March return date and what's next

4 December 2009 2:55 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"FlashForward's midseason finale aired Thursday (Dec. 3) and there were certainly some surprises and reveals, the biggest perhaps being that the show will not return until March of next year.

This, however, isn't just news to the audience. Co-creator/executive producer David Goyer tells Zap2it the network presented his team with the option only a couple of days ago. But the decision wasn't difficult.

If "FlashForward" returned in January it would've suffered through four schedule interruptions due to holidays, the Olympics and other various conflicts in the way. Coming back in March allows the show to avoid that mess and run all of the season's remaining episodes without break.

But will the storyline dates match up with real life dates? Will Demetri (John Cho)'s March 15th D-Day actually match up with the week of March 15, 2010? No. March 15th in the "FlashForward" world will actually play out at some point in April. »

Fans of ABC’s FlashForward are buzzing about last night’s episode—and especially what they learned about the about the immediate future of the series after the episode was over. FlashForward goes on an extended break

4 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

TV Series FlashForward is to go into hibernation over winter and will not return to our screens for three months, it was revealed today.

American network ABC said the drama wouldn't be back until March 4 in the USA. The UK is likely to see the show return around the same time, as it has so far been only a few days behind the Stateside transmission.

The show was originally set to come back in January. But, according to Variety, network insiders said the extended break would allow FlashForward to air the remainder of its 24-episode first season straight through the year without repeats.

It will also keep it away from any scheduling disruption caused by Winter Olympics coverage in February.

The winter holiday will also allow producers to give the series an overhaul. Ratings have fallen since its strong opening and co-showrunner Marc Guggenheim has departed.

ABC Holds Off On 'FlashForward' Until March

4 December 2009 4:36 AM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

Get ready for a long break for "FlashForward" ... almost to the point that its built-in April 2010 flash forward date might not actually match the time it really airs here in the United States. ABC says Thursday's episode of the series from David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga is the last fans will see until March, following NBC's broadcast of the Winter Olympics in February. The news didn't come as a release to reporters, however, but instead through a promo on ABC announcing the break. The news was a surprise to observers since ABC had said "FlashForward" would return in January. But this break could spell trouble for the show that has lost more than 22 percent of its viewers since its premiere. With 24 episodes of "FlashForward" ordered, unless ABC does some creative scheduling, the »

The recent episode of Flash Forward may be the show's fall finale, but as the series progresses the intrigue grows and we're only left with questions.  Usually a fan would look to the series' actors for hints on their characters.  Unfortunately, that isn't the case with this ABC drama.

Lucky for us, TV Guide caught up with Flash Forward's showrunner David Goyer with his executive producer and wife Jessica Borsiczky, to settle things at last.  Well, as far as January anyway.

FlashForward — Goyer and Borsiczky Hint at Future

2 December 2009 7:22 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

There's lots going on with ABC's freshman drama FlashForward. In addition to the premise of the show being absolutely chaotic, we also have the many, many character arcs that are going on. So, in the newest issue of TV Guide, the cast of FlashForward got together to ask the creators, husband-and-wife team David Goyer and Jessika Borsiczky, their burning questions regarding their characters and the show in general.

Star Joseph Fiennes, who plays Mark Benford, asked the duo about which came first, the Olivia's affair or Mark's drinking problem. "I can say that Mark gets an opportunity to revisit his flash with more clarity later this season. We didn’t see the entire 2 minutes and 17 seconds, but it will get rounded out. That further explains his downward spiral and the reactions it causes," Borsiczky shared. "There may be another reason why Mark drinks that has nothing to do with Lloyd or Olivia. »

Review: FlashForward mid-season finale and TV special FlashForward Revealed

I Knew I was right about that incongruous kangaroo.

Anyone who missed tonight's FlashForward because their interest has been waning needs to do whatever they can to see a repeat viewing.

In one of the best episodes for several weeks, there were some great revelations which then turned into new twists. In fact, the twists were twisted.

And about time too, after worrying talk of a production shutdown and critics predicting cancellation was on the horizon.

Well, it's clawed itself back from the brink. Or hopped back perhaps.

Mild spoilers ahead...

I won't give away all the details here except to say we find out the cause of the event, who killed Demetri and why his death is at odds with his girlfriend's happy vision, and more about the mystery man who blew up the doll factory. Out went the soap opera and in came the exciting drama.
