The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Blu-ray review: The Punisher Collection (two-film box set)

17 November 2009 2:37 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

There have been three attempts so far at adapting Marvel Comics' ultra-violent vigilante The Punisher on to the big screen.

The first film was in 1989, a direct-to-video release starring Dolph Lundgren which omitted many of the character's hallmarks and has been swept aside as a very early and rather ill-considered effort.

Much later, Marvel pressed the reset button and delivered a 2004 reboot starring Thomas Jane and directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the first directorial role for the screenwriter.

After various deliberations over putting a sequel in motion, Jane and Hensleigh dropped out and the next film, Punisher: War Zone, saw Ray Stevenson take over the lead role and Lexi Alexander directing. It came out in December last year in the USA, and in February in the UK.

Marvel itself was involved in producing the latter two movies, which Lionsgate distributed in the USA and Sony's Columbia Pictures handled overseas.

Tim Bradstreet: Exploring the Dark Country

6 October 2009 12:58 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

While most people know illustrator Tim Bradstreet from his disturbing covers for the John Constantine: Hellblazer and Clive Barker books as well as his noir ones on The Punisher, not many know that he runs Raw Studios with actor Thomas Jane. At the first Long Beach Comic Con, Bradstreet talked about his studio and their projects.

The artist also did uncredited work on Jane's directorial debut, Dark Country.

"I designed the look of Dark Country with Tom. The dynamic of how the stars look in the sky, and the mountains behind them on screen," Tim Bradstreet explains. "We kept it film noir. We wanted to give the movie a retro feel, but not stick it in one era necessarily. There's touches of the '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s in the movie. Only rarely do you see its a contemporary film, like when they take out a »

She points out that, “When I first arrived, John (Writer/Director Jonathan Hensleigh) and I had a meeting and discussed who this girl really was, they don’t really know about her much  at all.”

It appears I was most likely wrong in thinking Lightening Entertainment's The Irishman would be a direct-to-dvd title as the production house is out pre-selling the film at the Cannes Film Festival and Screen Daily has additional names to add to the cast. Already cast in the film, which will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jeremy Walters, are Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer and Ray Stevenson and Screen Daily announces Vincent D'Onofrio, Paul Sorvino and Vinnie Jones have also joined the cast. The film was inspired by Rick Porrello's "To Kill The Irishman: The War That Crippled The Mafia" and tells the story based on the life of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson), who lorded over Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s. Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 10, 2009

In the Wrap Up this week:

The Box Office boldly goes where no Star Trek film has gone before; Joel Silver sees an Apparition; Keanu Reeves Hydes Jekyll;  James McAvoy and Elizabeth Banks have The Details;Val Kilmer, Ray Stevenson and Christopher Walken know The Irishman and Nick Fury is a Pirate.

Box Office

J.J Abrams’ Star Trek reboot’s Spock-tacular $76 million opening ensures that the franchise will live long and prosper. The opening (which includes $7 million from Thursday) took almost as much as most films in the long running series banked in their entire run- unadjusted of course. Look for the film to “engage” with non-Trek fans and expect a sequel to go into production at warp speed. Can (Khan) the film have legs in future weeks? Word of mouth will probably override the initial geek stereotype.

The upcoming film is based on the life of mobster Danny Greene whose story inspired the book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia" by Rick Porello.

According to article, Greene was a violent Irish-American gangster who competed with the Italian mob in 1970s Cleveland and ended up provoking a countrywide turf war that crippled the mafia. Walken will play the loan shark and nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer is a Cleveland police detective who befriends Greene. Harvey Pekar is set to cameo in an as yet unannounced role. Christopher Walken, Ray Stevenson, and Val Kilmer Fling Car Bombs with 'The Irishman'

7 May 2009 8:03 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you crossed him, Shondor would kill you. If you didn't, he would charm you.

Sounds like Christopher Walken, doesn't it? Or, at least, his well-honed movie persona as charismatic tough guy. In a bit of pitch-perfect casting, The Hollywood Reporter posts that Walken, Ray Stevenson, and Val Kilmer have signed onto Jonathan Hensleigh's The Irishman -- an adaptation of Rick Porrello's book, To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia.

Walken will play Shondor Birns, a Jewish-American mobster who was once Public Enemy No. 1 in Cleveland, who hired a young Irish-American dude named Danny Greene (Ray Stevenson) back in the '60s. As time went on, Greene wanted a bigger chunk of the biz and wealth, which led to bad blood and ultimately, a rather nasty car bomb that killed Birns. Greene, meanwhile, was a little bit of everything -- FBI informant, instigator of a country-wide turf war, »

Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer Befriend The Irishman -- Offer him whiskey, potatoes, and other gifts relating to his stereotype

Written by Matt Goldberg Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer have come on board to Jonathan Hensleigh's "The Irishman". While I would hope for a whimsical comedy in the vein of "Waking Ned Devine", it's more in the vein of "State of Grace". The film is based off real story of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson) which inspired the book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia". After that war, the Mafia walked with a limp. On the plus side, the Mafia got all the good parking spaces from there on out. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Greene was a violent Irish-American gangster who competed with the Italian mob in 1970s Cleveland and ended up provoking a countrywide turf war that crippled the mafia. Ray Stevenson Is The Irishman

7 May 2009 2:42 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Ray Stevenson finished work in Rome and suddenly found himself a star, heading up The Punisher: War Zone and landing roles in The Book of Eli and Cirque du Freak. Now he's added a lead role in The Irishman to that roster, where he'll star alongside Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer.Despite the title, the film doesn't actually take place in the land of 40 shades of green, but in Cleveland, Ohio where mobster Danny Greene ruled the underworld in the 1970s. Stevenson will play Greene, Walken an infamous loan shark and nightclub owner called Shondor Birns and Kilmer a city cop who befriends Greene (who, funnily enough, was obsessed with the colour green). Cue attempted car bombs, successful car bombs and conflict with the Mafia. The whole thing is based on Rick Porrello's book To Kill The Irishman: The War That Cripped The Mafia, with director Jonathan Hensleigh (who, »

Punisher and Iceman Meet 'The Irishman'

It's strange to think a film that will star Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer and Ray Stevenson is one that will likely to go to DVD before it ever sees theaters, but that is exactly the impression I get from The Irishman, which was just announced by Variety. The mob drama is based on the life of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson), who lorded over Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s. Walken is onboard to play infamous loan-sharking nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer will portray a Cleveland cop who befriends Greene. The film will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, who also wrote the script, which was inspired by Rick Porrello's book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia." Stevenson, Walken, and Kilmer Join the Cast of The Irishman

Even though Punisher: War Zone wasn't a hit, it's definitely getting Ray Stevenson plenty of jobs. He's joining the cast of the mob drama The Irishman alongside of Christopher Walken and Val Kilmer (who were last seen together in True Romance). Filmmaker Jonathan Hensleigh, who previously directed 2004's The Punisher, will be directing this. Hensleigh also wrote the script, which is based on the life of mobster Danny Greene (Stevenson), who ran Cleveland's criminal underworld during the late 1970s. Walken will play infamous loan-sharking nightclub owner Shondor Birns, and Kilmer will play a Cleveland cop. The story was inspired by Rick Porrello's true life book "To Kill the Irishman: The War That Crippled the Mafia" (check it out on Amazon).
